I am in college, and was wondering how to pay for the SRS and possibly FFS. Hormones are partly covered by my insurance, but it is still quite a hefty chunk of change every month, not to mention the costs of school. I can cover the hair removal and the hormones with my job, but I still need a ton of cash.
I don't want to sound like an ass, but my school is $35,000 a year, and they are planning a modest increase of 5% this upcoming school year. Not to mention that I am a pre-med student, and will still need to afford medical school afterwards.
I feel like this post came out a little angry, and I didn't want it to sound that way. I am just really stuck with trying to figure out how to pay for this stuff.
I mean, I suppose I could take out a student loan for it, but I don't really want to get into any trouble over that.
I am contacting my insurance right now to see if SRS is medically necessary, and if I can convince them to pay for it. We shall see.
Keep us posted. I am trying to convince Kaiser of the same thing.

I could be wrong, but I think that using student loan money for medical costs is considered legit. At least, that was my take on it when I used mine for SRS.

I'm having the same problem. I've just been saving what I can and I plan on working a lot during the summer.
Lemonade stand? Spring is almost here! :D :D :D

Well, after fighting with the insurance company, they kept quoting the contract, which I blew holes in. Their final determination was this:
Dear (NAME REMOVED):
Thank you for contacting (NAME REMOVED).
If your physician deems Sex Reassignment Surgery is medically necessary, he/she can submit a prior authorization to our Medical Resource Management department to be reviewed. Please keep in mind the service must be medically necessary in order for the surgery to be approved.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to email or call us at (NUMBER REMOVED) or (NUMBER REMOVIED) Monday through Friday 8am to 8pm.
Thank you,

Their definition of medically necessary would include srs. There are a lot more emails, but this is the last one.
Woohoo!
I'll cross my everything and hope that it works for ya.
