Title: The Watchmen (9 in 10 chance of spoilers)
Post by: Jester on March 06, 2009, 09:12:04 AM
I saw the Watchmen last night, and it was phenomenal.  They really captured all of the characters properly, but a lot of the plot was condensed and I found the people who saw the movie who hadn't read the graphic novel weren't lost, but they didn't see the characters as three dimensional even though that's specifically the point of the Watchmen.  Oh well, the six hour DVD'll fix that.

They didn't cut the non-standard sexuality stuff from it at least although it was one of the things they streamlined and condensed.

I haven't seen it yet, but I've read it's not too bad even for those of us fans of the graphic novel and Alan Moore in general. Personally, I didn't like the "updating" of the costumes too much (they don't look 1985 anymore, where the book and movie are set) and the Comedian looks way too young and needs to eat a sammich. However, it may be a good movie by itself (or an OK one, like V for Vendetta), I'll have to see it.

About the three-dimensionality of the characters: it's an unfortunate casualty of the format. There's no way to include all the backstory subtleties that the novel brings in a 3 hour movie, it would need a miniseries. Moreover, the amazing subtleties of things like Dan Dreiberg's ornithology column name for example ("Blood from the shoulder of Pallas") will probably never translate well to film.

It's a pity that they had to condense and remove some important parts of the story.  Even then, the movie is almost three hours long.

I think this movie is receiving unfair criticism.  Considering the source material, I'd say this is one of the best film adaptations I've ever seen.

I really enjoyed seeing DrM walk about in the nude as if it were natural, because it is natural.
I really enjoyed the ending, it makes more sense than the book's ending and leaves a potential for the secret getting out in a way that I quite liked.
I really Really enjoyed Rorschach but then... I just do.
I loved it.. I love it.. it's .. the best movie I've seen in years.

LOVED it!!!!  Especially Rorschach.  He was outstanding.  I haven't read it yet, but I thought it was really well done.  That one sex scene though...I couldn't stop laughing really loudly...my friend and I kept getting weird looks because we were laughing so hard.  I can't listen to Cohen's version of Hallelujah ever again.

...my favorite thing about Dr. Manhattan was Billy Crudup on the Daily Show saying that there were some enhancements.  So cute...  He's adorable.

i didn't enjoy it very much at all. it's a film, not a book and a film needs more focus.

I thought it was great. Of course it can never hold a candle to the book and that's expected, but overall it was a very faithful adaptation. The ending miffed me a a lot because I was expecting the octopus thing, but it made more sense...I guess. I really wish that they had incorporated the motif of the embracing couple silhouette, but whatever.
