Title: Some GREAT news! ;D
Post by: Christina_Lee on August 24, 2006, 07:24:25 AM
I just HAD to share this with the community here.

(My apologies if this is not the proper forum)

My roommate and I (both TS) were interviewed by a local newspaper in early July in regards to the prejudisms that we face from day to day.

Here is the link!

Congratulations Christina!

I enjoyed reading the article very much!

Quote"There's not enough education on the issues. People think what we do this for fun or for sexual desire, but it's not. It's who we are."

Quite true, not enough education on the subject or total misunderstanding.  I wish people could understand that for most of us, transition is a necessity and a matter of life and death.

Great article Christina.

You should however correct the part:

QuoteIndividuals wishing to have gender-changing surgery in Canada must undergo therapy for years to ensure they are comfortable with their decision. Then they have to find an endocrinologist to prescribe the necessary hormones to prepare them for the final step, sex-reassignment surgery.

While many individuals may require "years of therapy", many do not, I was in therapy with my two therapists a little over a year before I got my letters.  Also while it is preferable to seek an endo to prescribe HRT, it is not always necessary.  My family doctor prescribes my HRT and she refers me to an endo should the need arise.  Finding an endo is a little missleading as most endos are specialists and deal through referals from other Dr's.  The problem that is often encountered is scheduling an appointment.  I remember that I had to wait 5 months to get in to see my endo.

Chat later :)

Great Article Christina! I really enjoyed reading it..You're so lucky to have found someone else like you to live and transition with. I'm still young (only 19) But i really hope sometime in the near future i find someone that i'm comfortable with knowing who i REALLY am...I'm tired of keeping it a secret and can't wait to just be ME!
-Again i really enjoyed the article, thanks for posting it! :)

Hi, Christina!

Thanks for the great article, and the great picture of you and your friend  ;D

I, too, had a little problem with the article though:

QuoteThe surgery costs about $10,000 in Montreal and $20,000 in Thailand.

There's an old saying in the news business that the closer you are to the story the more mistakes the piece has.  A girl in my support group has her surgery in Montreal in October.  Her tab is USD $22,000 (including airfare.)

But it's great to have it out there!

And, of course, Welcome to Susan's!

Welcome, Christina! :) Both of you look really good!

It's great that your daughter is so accepting. "Just do it." So true. If everyone could read this it would surely help a lot of TS folks.
