Public funding in the US is not only limited, its almost a dirty word.  Except for outreach organizations that may set aside funds for those in dire poverty, you're not going to find any public funding, and finding insurance to cover it is not going to be easy either.  My advice, start saving your money.  But, while there is not much public funding of anything, you can buy whatever you want that you have money for.

Hi Claire,   :icon_wave:

Welcome to our little family. Over 2100 strong. That would be one heck of a family reunion. Feel free to post your successes/failures, Hopes/dreams.  Ask questions and seek answers.  Give and receive advice.

But remember we are family here, your family now.  And it is always nice to have another sister.   :icon_hug:

As for Ohio, I understand it is not a good place for Transpeople.  Unless you have a great reason to go there, rethink about some other states that have laws protecting us.  Cali., Oregon and Washington are all states with protection laws.  And as far as I know the only way to fund surgeries is through private loans.  There is no insurance that covers it except for a few Fortune 500 companies.  But if you do find something, please let us know.  There are a lot of us who could use it.

Janet

Hi Claire and welcome, i live in Cleveland Ohio, are you just moving to Ohio or are you going to OSU, Ohio State University, OSU has a gender identity program and the Columbus area is pretty trans friendly from what others have said. Cleveland like any city; has areas that we can go to that are trans friendly, if you are just moving here, stay away from the southern part of Ohio, especially small towns. There are quite a few resources in the Cleveland area. Basically how it works here is you have to be in therapy three months before getting the letter to start hormones, then you make an appointment with a doctor or Endo and they will do tests and start the hormones. Most therapist will work with you on a sliding scale, meaning they will charge what you are able to pay. Be sure to bring a copy of your medical records if you can. If you have and more questions just add them here, pretty sure you need 15 posts to be able to private message someone.

Paula.

Thanks so much for the introduction. Pleased to "meet" you and hope you enjoy your time spent at Susan's.

Please take the time, if you haven't, to read the Site TOS (https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,2.0.html) On The Main Page (https://www.susans.org/index.html) you'll find links to Chat, Wiki, Links and the Reference Library that you should find helpful in getting to know others here and in finding topics and educational listings that you'll find helpful for transitioning.

You may also want to check out Dr. Becky Allison's site http://www.drbecky.com/therapists.html (http://www.drbecky.com/therapists.html) and check under Ohio and Columbus to see if you can pre-arrange a therapist.

As tekla said there will be no public funding in any state. Some states have authorized insurance coverage for many aspects of transition. Some states prolly never will. Think of it in some ways as Yorkshire having one set of standards and Kent having another, etc.

As tekla said, if you have plenty of money people here will sell you darned-near anything, up to and including their children and wives, although selling people is technically illegal here unless you run a sports franchise or are heavily invested in bringing in women from Asia and Africa to be prostitutes. But in all of those case except for the sports franchise you need to know you may well get busted for doing that.

Best,

Nichole

Hiya Claire :icon_wave:

Welcome from yet another Brit :icon_flower:

I hope the relocation goes well... ;)

...there are a number of us looking at the option of getting off this little island, but I think I'll be stuck here for a while yet.  ::)

...and Nichole, how did you find out about the significant differences between Yorkshire and Kent....?  ;D

....and then there is also Scotland vs England, which seems like might as well be a different continent as far as the funding of Gender issue treatment is concerned... ::)

yes i knew it was like that in the usa theres hardly any public funding. You don't have an NHS like we have here, though we ts s are predujiced against here and funding is limited even though we have an nhs because of fear of reaction from general public i think who know next to nothing about why we are ts, and often are jusat bigots cos we dont conform to their normal view of whats male and female.Yes i know once i move over i will have to work hard and save privately to fund things.

Thanks Paula.Yeh id found there were gender dysphoria clinics in Cleveland and Columbus through a search o the web.Yeh both places seem to be ts friendly, and think there maybe two or three equality centres in dayton, as it may be dayton area im moving to, though they might be in Columbus. Thanks for advice and i'll make sure to stay clear of Southern Ohio, pob just stick to being around dayton or going to Cleveland or Columbus.

Thanks for all your help and for how welcoming evryone's been here, you've all been lovely, thankyou  :)

i'm not sure yet if it's ohio i'm moving to as a house is becoming available in Illinois not far from Chicago so may be grouping together with few friends for house share there and been told its one of mosat ts friendly areas in usa there. But still might be going to dayton, not sure yet, and Cleveland and Columbus sound good.

yeh it is v exciting.Main prob i think is how to get citizenship or at least temporary residency in meantime before can get permanent residence though think found best ways around that and I'll go out to work to earn more to fund sessions at gender dysphoria clinic and surgeries, but not sure i'll be accepted as client at a gender dysphoria clinic till i get one of visas in place.Does anyone know. Will i be able to be a client at a gender dysphoria service if i dont have a tempporary work or permanent visa yet? maybe have to wait till i get one of those visas to be accepted as at least temporary citizen b4 can get treated at gender dysphoria place?

Thanks for how helpful and welcoming you've all been. You've all been lovely. Thanks  :)
