Title: What is your brain sex?
Post by: tinkerbell on August 29, 2006, 03:34:10 AM
Yes, another test :P, but this time, Grazia suggested it, and I thought it was .
different and more interesting than the other ones :D

If you are not interested in taking this test, you really don't have to ;)
And here is a quote from the site rules:

Quote from: Susan's site rules, rule #7If someone wants to discuss a subject you are not interested in either suggest a new subject; go to another of the many areas on this site; or ignore that person, topic, or discussion.

And here is the test:

What is your brain sex? (http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/humanbody/sex/add_user.shtml)

From 0 to 100, my score was 50 ;D ;)

Quote from: Brain Sex ID Testyou prefer men with more masculine faces

Of course I do!. :D :D...geez that was news to me ::) ::)

Hi Tinkerbell,

It is worth me saying a bit about the test that is on the BBC Website.

This formed part of a BBC TV programme that explored the differences between GENDER, "The Secrets of the Sexes". It also was used for research purposes in Gender Studies.

It followed a number of men and women in their daily lives, as well as testing them on a variety of "classroom activities" and also "external activities"

The programme was extremely well done and gave an excellent insight into Gender differences in communication, spatial awareness and how we think and act.... and then assessed their Brain Sex.

The scene was set by all the participants coming to the studio in a taxi (same taxi driver every time), who told the passenger his life story and in depth detail about his divorce. They where all asked the same questions in the studio and the women related every detail about his life, clothes he was wearing etc, the guys of course remembered very little.

Two points really stood out to me, All the women performed very poorly at the spatial awareness tests (apart from one, who wasa mechanical Engineer)... Such as parking a car, driving a JCB, etc...

All the guys, apart from one failed miserably to comfort and change a crying baby (even though they where Fathers themselves).

Both these examples where interesting as the Woman Engineer (had a brain sex on the masculine side) AND the guy of course had a brain sex on the Feminine side. :o

Me... I took this test as part of the survey carried out in the UK, not surprisingly I came out.....to the middle of the Feminine side (and yes I prefer man with masculine faces).

I got a 25 on the male side.  But that's not all that hard to explain with a background in engineering and science, my test results are always skewed to that side.  Tests still assume that women can't learn or read.

But here are the specifics:

for Angles, I scored female  (13 of 20)

Spot the difference(21):  very low for average male

Right hand on top means that I am verbal and analytical not artistic or spatial (wierd because I scored perfect on the spatial test ;))

Way feminine on the empathy score (16)... higher than most women who average 10.6.

Systemizing (20 out of 20) Women average is 8  Male average score is 12.5 I have no idea what this means for me.

Empathy I scored slightly higher than normal leaning towards female (8 out of 10)

Fingers:  Get this.. female.  go figure.  I used a set of calipers.

Faces: I prefer feminine faces.  Duh ;) I don't know if this is a female or male trait.

3D spatial recognition.  Perfect score 12 out of 12.  Male

Words:  I scored 15 on both sets.  Definitely female

Ultimatum:  I asked for 50 percent.  Definitely female

So I'm not sure that I learned anything new... other than my fingers are feminine.  Yea right ;)

Thank you so much Becky for informing us about this test; personally I liked it better than the other ones.  Actually the person who suggested this test is Grazia, one of our newest members, but I don't think too many people saw it posted under one of my threads, so I decided to give it a try and see what everyone thought about it. Take care and say hi to the little devils for me! ;)

CINDI: Actually my fingers turned out to be feminine in size.  I am only 7 1/2 to an 8 (ring size)  I thought my fingers were wide but apparently they are not...I am crushed!!! ;)

>snip<

I have nothing but respect for the programs (or programmes) produced by Auntie Beeb.  I remember another one produced on sex and sexuality.  It had a maximum of interesting information and a minimum of purient interest, and the stuff that was puriently interesting was there to totally support the hard science.  But, I digress...

BBC-produced shows often end up on the Discovery or TLC networks over in the Colonies, so watch for 'em.

I took the test a while back.  While I don't remember all the scores, the ones that made me go 'eh?' were the one where you rotate the cube figures (perfect score), fingers (although my ring finger looks longer than my index, the measured difference was in the can't determine range), and ultimatum (what?  The people who offer less than half outnumber me?  By a wide margin?)

I think these sorts of tests need to be coupled with measurements of IQ.  Somewhere I read that as IQ increases, the differences between the genders decrease.  Or rather, IQs above 110~115 are often due to enhancement of traits common to the opposite gender, i.e., girls who can parallel park and mentally rotate figures, boys who can read faces and think of lots of synonyms, antonyms and homonyms for a given word.

Top it off with transsexuals who are transtitioning/transitioned tend to be of above average IQ, and OF COURSE our results are going to be skewed, silly!  ;D ;D ;D

...ACK!  I'm being late for work!!!

I'm a ZERO overall, lol...

I scored fairly masculine in most areas, except:

Your empathy score is: 14 out of 20
Your systemising score is: 6 out of 20
Eyes: Your score: 9 out of 10

Amusing, as it DOES describe the feeling of being "me." I've often joked that I feel like I was forced to go F2M... and that the more-feminine empathetic core remains, but it's encrusted over by a shell of typically masculine abilities.

Neat test!

50 on the Female side. *shrug*
One of the forums I visit listed this test a while ago; For a long time I was wondering if it could spit out anything other than 50(F), 0, 50(M). I think we eventually got a 24 or something like that though.
An yes I did and do like female faces, no surprise there.

Hi!,
as I told in another post, I got a 50.
I think that this test is based on a serious research, but anyway I wonder to know if it measures (or guesses) the sex of brain or maybe the way the brain is influenced by the environment where the girl or the boy is living and growing.
Just as an example, I do not need a test to know that I am able to perceive the feelings of the people I relate to.
Maybe this one could be an innate ability. But is it just the same for other kind of abilities?
I believe that spatial abilities depends a lot on experiences done. If I have never used a map I can easily get in trouble the first time I have to find the way home besides of the sex of my brain. And that a 'female' brain who has experience (and technique) can easily outperform a 'male' brain with no experience at all.

the only thing I think makes this test less adaquite for us is the portions that emphasize the pressence of testosterone and estrogen. concidering we are in bodies producing the wrong hormones for the gender we identify with, which will score us further away from that gender. that aside my score comes to be 50% male, and I tend to be right in the middle except for the shape and spacial, and fingers (male) and the word and ultimatum (female).
so what do I conclude? not sure, more than anything it just reasures the fact that I feel both male and female, but it makes me wounder(as I already did) how much of that is afected by the impropor hormones. hence my continuing desire for an HRT trial, will I stay in the middle or move far more female?
Title: Re: What is your brain sex?

Interestingly, I've noticed a decrease in my spatial relations ability since hormones.  Seriously.  Normally if somebody is describing directions, I can picture in my head as if I'm looking down at a 3-D map.  Well, I was asking a guy for directions and I kept totally getting it wrong and had to have him draw me a map.  IT was weird not to be able to do that.  Maybe there is more of a connection to that and hormones.

I scored 25 on the female side. I was kind of amazed as I thought I would score more on the male side being male most of my life. I put down I like women but came up with I like masculine faces. Hmmm. I scored mainly on the fem side except one part where I didn't do so hot and was totally male. I could have done more words, but I forgot the commas the first time around and had to go and put them in and I don't type that fast.

Hi all
I wasn't sure which ones were for males and female so I had no idea where I would end up at the end of the test. I scored 50 on the female side my strongest points was empathy at 17 and the eye one I got 5. I enjoyed doing the male faces and I got all of them.  :) By the way I just joined three days ago my name is Cynthia I go by Cin I been full time for five years.

Welcome, Cin! :)

I've taken this test so many times... going by memory here... I got most of the angles right, I mean they're practically side by side. On one hand my fingers are the same length; on the other, my index is actually longer. On identifying the emotions in the eyes, I got a high score but don't remember exactly what it was.

I've told it at different times to show me both men's and women's faces; don't remember how the men's turned out but with the women I kept thinking, well gosh I'm not particularly attracted to either face, thus I gave it mostly neutral answers. In the end it said I prefer feminine faces. *shrug*

Rotating the shapes in 3D space was the hardest. It's like I couldn't rotate them in my mind so I had to look at how many blocks were in each segment and narrow it down by the way the turns went relative to each other. I wonder if that skewed my results. Didn't do too well with the words, but that's because I have CRS. :D

And I asked for 50%.

In the end, IIRC it gave me 50% male. I'm really not sure why.

Thanks, this is really interesting. I was thinking that hormones do not alter such abilities. I believe that my spatial abilities are still more or less the same then before, but I'll like to know if someone else has had similars effects.

They do affect some abilities. I once read a scientific article where a bunch of volunteers were given the game where you uncover figures in a grid and have to remember where they are so you can match them. Postmenopausal women taking estrogen consistently did better than those not taking estrogen; the latter scored about the same as men.

Amusing test.  Half of the items say I have a female brain and half say I have a male brain.  They have an issue with using timed tests, because they are not taking into account that the processing speed of the brain slows down with age.  So tests like "angles" will tend to come back more "female" as you get older, and "spot the difference" will tend to come back more "male" as you get older.

The one thing it tells me is that my "empathy" score is way out of the normal range.

Angles
Your score: 12 out of 20
Average score for men: 15.1 out of 20
Average score for women: 13.3 out of 20
If you scored 0 - 12: You have more of a female brain.

Spot the difference
Your score: 21%
Average score for men: 39%
Average score for women: 46%
If you scored between 0 - 33%: You may have more of a male brain.

Hands
Right thumb on top: This suggests the left half of your brain is dominant.
(Even though I'm left handed.)

Empathising
Your empathy score is: 18 out of 20
Average score for men: 7.9 out of 20
Average score for women: 10.6 out of 20
If you scored 15 and above, you are very empathic and would be an ideal person to comfort people in a time of crisis. Women in general are better at empathising.

Systemising
Your systemising score is: 12 out of 20
Average score for men: 12.5 out of 20
Average score for women: 8.0 out of 20
A score of 15 and above suggests you're good at analysing or building systems. Men in general are better at systemising.

Eyes
Your score: 7 out of 10
Average score for men: 6.6 out of 10
Average score for women: 6.6 out of 10
If you scored 7 - 10: Your result suggests you are a good empathiser, sensitive to other people's emotions. Women generally fall into this category.
(If both men and women average 6.6, what is the point in this test?  One of those numbers must be a typo.)

Fingers
Right Hand: 0.98
Left Hand: 1.02
Average ratio for men: 0.982
Average ratio for women: 0.991
Men generally have a ring finger that is longer than their index finger, which gives them a lower ratio than women, whose ring and index fingers are usually of equal length.
(Well, gee.  I always sort of figured the right half of my body was masculine and the left half was feminine.)

Faces
Your choices suggest you prefer more masculine faces.
(Whatever that means.)

3D shapes
Your score: 11 out of 12
Average score for men: 8.2 out of 12
Average score for women: 7.1 out of 12
If you scored 10 - 12: Are you an engineer or do you have a science background? People with these skills tend to score in this range. (Yes)  Past studies have concluded that people in this range have a more male brain.

Words
Your score: you associated 4 word(s) with grey and you named 6 word(s) that mean happy.
Average score for men: 11.4 words total
Average score for women: 12.4 words total
If you produced 1 - 5 words: You are more of the strong, silent type with a male brain. You probably find it easier to express yourself in non-verbal ways, preferring action rather than words.
If you produced 6 - 10 words: Most people in this range have a female-type brain.

Ultimatum
If you had to split £50 with someone, you said you would demand £25
So far on the Sex ID test, men have demanded 51.6% (£25.80) of the pot and women have demanded 51.0% (£25.50), on average.
Sex differences are small in this task. Demanding less than 60% of the pot (ie £30) is more typically female. Demanding more than 65% of the pot (ie £32.50) is more typically male.

I got 50 on the female side, which is supposed to be the average female. I should have copies the results before I closed the page. :(

one interseting thing about measuring the fingers, both my index and ring finger are exactly the same size, and the same size on both hands. I've heard the fingers being different. I wonder what it means if they are the same length?

25 on the male side (basicly the androgyne zone) which was not surprising since I scored perfect in all the spatial ability thing (I've always had an uncanny ability to know where I am in space, more than any male or female I know!).

I score high (20) on empathy and (18) systemising!
I scored perfect on angles and 3D shapes!!
I scored 35% on the find what moved thing, but I didn't do it quite right, I thought they had to move a lot, but some just moved a little and thus I missed them.
9/10 on the eye thing.
Extreme Digit ratio: 1.03 right, 1.01 left.
Produced 13 words and 7 synomyms.

Seems my scores are high on both the male and female range, hey, I'm weird like that.

While on average, women may fit these things, I think that if you took women mechanical engineering students, you'd get a score quite similar to mine.

25 on Female. I happen to be an engineering student. I hope I didn't bias my own results >.>

Perfect on lines and angles. 86% on moving objects. 8 on eye/emotion.
14/14 Empathizing/Systemizing. 15/14 on the word tests.
Prefer masculine faces.

My digit ratio is .96 on both sides. This really bothered me at one point in the past, until I took a good look at my mom's hands once, and what do you know? She also has a longer ring finger, with a ratio like mine, as a normal natal female. So... I guess I inherited it ;p
