Photographer Del LaGrace Volcano's work burst onto the international queer scene in 1991 with the publication of Love Bites, a collection of photographs primarily from London and San Francisco's burgeoning dyke underground, circa 1988-90. The book achieved cult status before disappearing out of print, but not before LaGrace Volcano made a further mark with The Drag King Book (text by Judith "Jack" Halberstam, Serpent's Tail), self-explorations in gender identity, and a love-driven move to Sweden. With the publication of Femmes of Power: Exploding Queer Femininities, LaGrace Volcano and collaborator Ulrika Dahl, a Swedish academic who conducted the interviews and wrote the text, help push the boundaries of queer femininity.
