Title: Face feminization questions (hormonal way!)
Post by: Myself on April 19, 2009, 05:20:00 AM
Hello!

I was wondering how long does it take the face to be feminized so you are recognized as a female in face pictures.

How long did it take people here?

I did not do it yet, but it's pretty much a big deal to me. It depends on how masculine certain facial features are, some have more some have less. It can be done in a day and it can be done in a matter of years.

Here's a good link,

It depends on the person and what your bone structure is to begin with.

Losing weight is always good.

Do not be surprised at how things change.

I'm going to include a picture here of me after 3 months of spiro (and nothing else), then me one entire year later. Look at how the face becomes more delicate and especially all the stuff in the lower part of the face and neck thins out.

(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.intpcentral.com%2Fuploads%2Ff14a316f7806c96e6723b0783c7bc5f3April_2008_2009_jw.jpg&hash=38b9ed619460d417fad89a64ea590cfb7cb51a1b)

Also included here is a picture from last summer with about three months of ESTROGEN added to the spiro. Note how the cheeks do flesh out.

(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.intpcentral.com%2Fuploads%2F0c50ded18fb153b11b3f039071d293d620080905_004.jpg&hash=99351870f9c38e6a8a7bdcae3c6567b53dfa3549)

I was 39 in two of these pics. Younger people tend to do better.

Like others have said, you can use tricks too. How you do your makeup can make a big difference in what parts of your face are accentuated. Minimize the masculine stuff; maximize feminine aspects. Even your haircut changes the shape of your face, you can use it to frame your face, or cover up a square jaw, or whatever else.

I usually thought out my appearance pretty well, to help shape my face. For me, I was passing 95% of the time at the time when the bottom picture was taken.

Jenny, don't take offense at this as none is meant, but,.... are you sure you're trans? I would never have guessed.

I wish my wife could see your pics... maybe she'd stop saying that, at 21, she's too old to have hrt do anything for her.

You can't feminize a face with hormones. HRT can sometimes make the skin a little softer but it won't change the way you look unless you are pre - puberty.

I call BS on that in a big way blondie.  The face can be "feminized" with hormones changing the fat/muscle distribution.  Thus changing your appearance.  The bone structure is not affected by the hormones however.

That's the key.

Hormones redistributes the 'soft stuff' -- depending on your genetics.

Also depending on your genetics is the bone stuff, but that has to be surgically altered and otherwise does not change.

This topic is near and dear to me because when I decided to transition, I thought I would have no way to pass ever or survive the anxiety without facial surgery... but I didn't have the money. I staked my emotional well-being on hormones -- and was fortunate. And I see other people who do well with hormones too. So they shouldn't be downplayed. The effectiveness depends on your bone structure... and I was fortunate to have non-masculinized skull structure.

I honestly don't know when I didn't pass (we can't read people's minds to see what they perceive), there were just a few times when I got looks from people that made me wonder if they knew. But I have never had an issue with bathrooms when I started going out, for which I'm grateful...

Quote from: Sebastien on April 20, 2009, 01:43:51 AMI wish my wife could see your pics... maybe she'd stop saying that, at 21, she's too old to have hrt do anything for her.

Yeah, that's definitely not a necessary truth. It just depends on the person.

Twenty-one? Uggh. I wish I had started then.

... thank you for the kudos. Funny, though, I'm still insecure about my appearance. And part of it is because I spent 38-40 years as a male and so it's hard to get past all the years of living in that role... A lot of the battle is fought in our own minds, I think.

Lets see after one year on hrt I was passable, after two years even more so.  It's partly soft tissue and partly relaxing and just being you. Soft tissue is fair game with HRT and depending on how well you choose your parents will effect how well HRT does it's magic.  IT DOES MAKE a Difference or did anyway with my then 50 year old body.  Oh yes, HRT cuts about 10 years off your appearance.

Me I noticed that the eye lids changed just a little, Got Cheeks, lips changed a little.  Bone structure did not change.

Besides that shaping the eyebrows, good makeup and relaxing and not worring that the 6 year old is reading you (what the heck is it with 6 year olds anyway.  ;-)

I hope this doesn't make me seem shallow but this post has given me a bit of hope.  I rarely post, mostly I just sit and read.   I don't know how many of you that post regularly understand how much it helps to know that other people are not just struggling with the same issues in their lives, but are able to come to peace with those issues.

I've looked into therapy on and off for years and for the past eighteen months I've been seriously talking with a therapist but I've always been terrified of going through with transition.  Part of that fear is due to family, but that fear was lessened a few months ago when I came out to my sister. I told her that I wasn't sure where I was going, but I knew I wasn't a straight man.  Her response was, no kidding.  She had suspected that I was gay and she thought I would talk to her about it when I was ready.  I can't say what a relief it was to talk to her about my life honestly for the first time.  Next up is my mom.  I plan on telling her when she comes to visit me this summer.

Other than family issues my biggest fear of transitioning is that I wouldn't be seen as a woman.  I know that is shallow but I'm not sure I go through the rest of my life with people thinking that I'm just a man in woman's clothes.  I have the utmost respect for people who transition without being able to pass, but I'm that strong.  I don't want to spend the rest of my life sticking out.  It's not that I care what other people think, but I hate attention, and the idea of not blending in terrifies me.

I can't afford FFS now, nor anytime for the foreseeable future.  But seeing the changes that hormones have caused in other people over the years gives me hope that they may help me feel less uncomfortable in my own body.

Depends. Whilst some achieve a very feminine face in a few months after mones without surgery that allows them to blend, there are some gals that never do & need surgical FFS to do the same.

HRT - facial feminization, plus weight loss - pretty rapid results- about four months.

It depends on the genetics, age and fat distribution of the individual. Some do not get any improvement or feminization from HRT at all. It's pot luck as to whether it works or not but the younger you are the more chance it will work.

I agree with Naturally Blonde, genetics plays a really big part in transition, but hey, it is a journey of self discovery and time will tell.

I've been on HRT for just over a year.

I don't know if there's a whole lot of change, but people say there is. Sorry for the amount of pictures. I have a bunch more, but I thought I'd just space it out some more.

Well, I really don't get bothered for being a boy, I suppose, so I guess I'm looking okay-ish. *shrugs*

And, yes, I know I dress more tomboy-ish lezbo now (with a hint of lipstick lez). People still hate me for cutting my hair. LOL I really don't care. Although, tomorrow i'm wearing a mini skirt to a protest about the government cutting SRS coverage in our province. I haven't worn a skirt in a year, I don't think. I've never worn a mini skirt. I'm wearing a plad mini skirt, black tank-top with loose fitted tie and an undone white shirt along with combat boots and a I'll be carring a huge pride flag. I'll probably be on the news, again, like the last protest where they caught me holding my ex-gf's hand... in that cast I was sorta looking Shane (kate moennig) like, from the L-word. LOL

I did see the previous posts, yes.

Some people look fairly feminine before starting HRT and if you have the basic structure to start with it helps. But HRT is not a miracle cure and won't make any drastic changes. You can improve things with laser and laser surfacing and improving your hairstyle.

I dunno Natalie, I don't think you'd pass as a boy anymore... I think I'd totally "read" you as a girl if you tried lol

Despite the fact that it has to do with genetics and everyone is going to react differently to hormones, there is still room to be hopeful. I'm sure what Beni said about relaxing and just being you plays a big part in it too, as does believing in yourself.

This may be a blonde question and off topic but for the life of me, how does one post pics on here. Tried once but nothing happened soooooooo gave up. I look so different from my pics before transitioning too.

You have inspired me too as I to think I look male and think to myself OMG why do you think you can pass as a women. People tell me I do look 100% female and I don't get read as far as I can tell at least 95% of the time. I have the occasional doubt that I hear when people seem to think its OK to discuss you as you pass them.

You all give me hope.  I'm not sure FFS can be in my future.

I live in a smallish town where I don't know everyone, but I can't go anywhere without running into someone I recognize and who recognizes me.  Therefore, I have to assume that most people I meet know that a month ago I was a guy and now I'm trying to present as a woman.  Sometimes we exchange a little look like we're sharing a secret.  Almost everyone has been very accepting.

Many of you look wonderful in your pictures.  I don't know how much HRT will help, but hair removal has already helped, plus haircut and shaping the eyebrows, makeup, and clothes.  But mostly I think it is mannerisms and attitude.  (I hope. ::))

Jennywocky, You are such an inspiration to me. What a gorgeous face! I'm just beginning transition at 37 I don't really desire FFS (or care to spend the money either). Your results with HRT are awesome. I can't wait to start. My facial bone structure is fairly feminine as well. My optimism springs!

So glad to have Susan's place.

My favorite picture of me:

Both at the same month, both after shower (different days, the second one was actually taken more recently.. also more time after a shower).
No creams/make up or whatever in any of them.
How can I look so different when both are natural pictures !

Relax, your face is fine. Once you've done electrolysis on your facial hair and shaped your eyebrows you will look great with makeup applied. Your features are already much prettier than many genetic females and FFS would be just an optional extra if/when you can afford it, but not necessary in my opininon.
All I can add is, be thankful for what you've been given!

I've noticed that many people have mentioned HRT plus weight loss.

There is also HRT plus weight gain.
There's no way I could have achieved this face without GAINING a good deal of weight.

Too many transwomen starve themselves hoping for results that could be gained with a bit of healthy fat.

LOL True. Get used to it! I've been here for a few years and seen the same topics over and over, new people come and they'll ask the same questions others (including maybe ourselves) have asked before. That's the way it is. Ride the ride and have some fun. ;)

Jennywocky,
Got your message. I would love to be able to ask you more specific questions about your experience HRT. I'm just too new to the forum to be able to reply directly :-\ I'll keep posting.

Thanks again girl,

Jill

I was on HRT for 10 months before I had full FFS. I know the post is about hormonal changes, so I have 10 months worth of those. I was 37 when I started HRT.

I try to post new before and after pics but I'm running out, lol

This is pre-everything, I think it's like 10/06
(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi184.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx153%2Fmeghanandrews%2FIMG_0356-1.jpg&hash=bac70cab25f8dbcaf8378c151f09825d846c6d54)

Then this is after 10 months of HRT right before FFS
(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi184.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx153%2Fmeghanandrews%2F1213846494-2.jpg&hash=06551721553ffc292e85a4a960e504fb5401fbb8)

And then this is like two months after FFS, so 1 full year of HRT
(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi184.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx153%2Fmeghanandrews%2FP1030118.jpg&hash=ccacd299f11878d411e4cfeccee6f234c3ee44d2)

And this was from a few days ago, 9 months post-FFS and 18 months on HRT
(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi184.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx153%2Fmeghanandrews%2FPicture340.jpg&hash=1a85b539c42eb0450dd14efa40a3a2c524c6fad2)

The jaw, chin, brow bossing, trachea, upper lip, all taken care of. No amount of HRT would have really changed those things about me, but for some people, maybe they can, especially younger transitioners. I don't think HRT is a miracle drug, especially not for bone. You definitely see changes over time, just take a look at many of the pics posted in our forums by people who had massively changed appearances with no FFS. It can be done, but you don't know unless you are years ahead of where you are now :) Meghan

Oh Meghan, the before and after photos tell a story like no words could do. You've achieved so much. I'm one of your youtube subscribers so I followed you all through FFS and beyond. You are a great inspiration to many  :)

Meghan I see in your first picture that you had the typical Male hair loss....the M shape, and yes I have that also to about the same degree I see in that image.

were you able to correct that with surgery because im sure it limited your hair styles, like a center part or barely off center?

btw WoW, just WoW :)

Caylea

actually after seeing a few more pictures of you...you dont have that M.....me bad.
and if you do it is so slight i cant see it :)

Meghan, your pics are surprising with the square jawed Donny Osmond type image at the top to the last pic which looks quite impressive and feminine. You would never be able to achieve that effect with HRT?

I personally worry to much about how feminine my facial features are. I live in northern Utah, home of some the most homely GG's on earth. If you can find it, check out Mark Twains comments on Utah and Mormon women. It can be found on Google.

You can't feminize a face with hormones. HRT can sometimes make the skin a little softer but it won't change the way you look unless you are pre - puberty.

I'm 25, so I'm hardly pre-puberty.  Post from another forum:
(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdevcenter.coreforge.org%2Fcoreimages%2Fstorimages%2F3db3df090d0f87e434aa2936875b5482%2FProgression.jpg&hash=74487a8a57ddb50974ed373be66c7c8f07f8b8cd)
I stopped HRT before the first pic, resumed after the second pic was taken.  The last 2 pics were about one month apart - I switched to sublingually.

No photoshop, no touched up pictures, no makeup.  At all.

So I have had my eyebrows done!
I think it helped a bit but I am always a critic :D
I think the chin is the worse part in my face and I need to learn to style my hair :)

Everyone keeps telling me to do bangs! but for some reason, the more my forehead is exposed, the better it seems to look! as long as I have lines of hair running just at the side of my forehead somewhat next to the cheekbones.

I should probably get a make up kit too :D
although it been more and more (even before the eyebrows) that people address to me as to a she even with the most un-appropriate cloths! kind of makes me go into shock and happiness at the same time :)

There's some great picture's up there, no question about it but HRT hasn't worked very well for me facially and I find my pre HRT pics look more feminine with a much rounder and fatter face before? any weight I put on now goes on my belly and not on the places I'd like it to go.

I agree... HRT doesnt guarantee that one will pass, its mostly in genetics and how feminine/masculine your bone structure is before starting the HRT. At least this  is what i've read in alot of websites...

Kathrine i noticed that u have a very visible adams apple in the beginning and its almost undetectable in your last one wow! is this because of the fat redistribution?

It all takes time.   I have been taking hormones for about four months.   My face is less masculine and my neck has slimmed.   I am going to have to buy some new rings as my fingers have slimmed.  sing two stone also helped!

In make up I am amazed how much I resemble my mother.
