If someone started taking T for a period of time, like a year or so, and then stopped, which effects would be permanent and which would revert back? I already know voice change is permanent, what about the facial masculinisation and "down there" growth?
Another question... sorry this is gross but I won't know unless I ask. :S On T would the girl parts still get wet when aroused?
Hi Kes,
I would guess the hair and the masculinisation to your face would probably stay the same.
To your gross question.. the answer is yes
Jay
I think which effects are permanent and which aren't varies from person to person. Generally, it's assumed that voice and hair growth will be permanent, whereas the monthly red death and fat redistribution will reverse.
However, a mate of mine who was on T for a number of years but decided to stop taking it for various reasons has discovered that pretty much all the effects - including hair growth - have reversed. I'm not sure about his voice, I'm afraid, but he has said that he discovered that nothing was permanent.
:)

I've been on and off T twice, though not by choice. In my experience, when one goes off T, periods return within 3-4 months, facial and body hair diminishes exponentially, muscle mass diminishes, and fat goes back to female distribution. Voice remains the same as when on T, though I know sometimes it can revert somewhat... I watched a documentary on Thomas Beatie (the "pregnant man"), who said that after a few months off T, his voice was at least an octave higher than when he was on T. Of course, I believe he also had to go on estrogen and progesterone for a time before becoming pregnant... and certainly had more of those hormones while pregnant.
Clitoral growth, as far as I'm aware, is permanent. Mine didn't diminish in size any. And since going on T, my "lubrication" of those parts has actually increased about fivefold. That may be due to my increased ability to become aroused... not really sure.
I assume facial masculinization would be permanent, too... though that fat redistribution can make quite a change in the face as well.

MeikoEliasXavier is an FtM who chose to stop hormones. You can look up his vids on YouTube, he has a vlog about the changes he's experienced and whatnots. Very interesting and informative and you'll probably find alot of your questions answered there :)

I was going to suggest this youtube guy also MeikoEliasXavier, he is now going back on T and has yet (as of a few days ago) to post an update about his return to T and how it's going. But he does cover what happened while he was off which was a year and a half with the video visual you can actually see the changes.
Myles
He's going back on huh? hmm, I hope he doesn't get such bad acne this time, cause I remember that was one of the reasons why he stopped... I suppose he's going to use medication if it does flare up again?
Yeah I am waiting to see how it has been going now that he is back on. He posted a response to someones questions in the comment sections to one of his why he stopped videos saying he was on for 18 months off for 18 months and now back on.
Myles
I find what he said about acne so strange... I have slightly more acne on my back and shoulders on T, but my face has never been clearer. In fact, both times I had to get off T, my acne increased.
Guess estrogen's worse for me than for most.

Odd experience! I never had very much acne when I went through my first puberty, and I still haven't seen any in my second one. I get maybe one pimple every two weeks, and I can't even say for sure whether it's T-related. I'm hoping that because I have freakishly dry skin, I will never have a real outbreak of zits.
I guess there's still time. I've only been on T for a couple of months.
BTW, Sebastien, I really love your latest avatar pic.
I haven't had alot of acne whilst I have been on T.. a few spots here and there but nothing drastic at all when they do come they are quite big and I only get them really after I have shaved. No spots on my back a couple on my chest but thats about it! Must be one of the lucky ones I guess! :)
Jay
I never got much either. I did have to use a medicated face wash, which I'd never had to do before, but that was just to stop the odd one or two from showing up. Guess I was lucky too.
Dennis
Oh, and as far as Kes' second question. I used to have serious problems lubricating, pretty much my whole adult life. But on T, no problems whatsoever. In fact, I overlubricate. (Sorry if that's a little gross.)
But I've read that the goo comes from internal sex organs (mine are still intact). If this is accurate, isn't it true that anyone on T who has a hysto won't lubricate much--or at all? Comments, anyone?
And I've read, of course, that over time, T messes with the sex organs in various ways. Will I still lubricate the same way eight or ten years from now if I stay on T and leave my internal organs intact?
I get a few more zits than I did before T, but it's not too bad. It was probably the thing I was most worried about, as I had horrible acne from the age of about 10 to the end of my teens pretty much. I do use anti-zit face wash now, which I never did before, but I don't know how much difference it's made really. I'm not going to stop it to find out though!
As far as the lubrication "down there" is concerned, I'm really not sure. It's not somewhere I'm particularly connected with, tbh. If anything though, I think it's lessened, but I wouldn;t like to say for certain - that's not really much help I'm afraid!
:)
I would assume that hysterectomy would mess with lubrication... as well as much of sexual function. I read recently in another ftm's post that hysterectomies involve the removal of the cervix, and I personally am one who has his most explosive orgasms from cervical stimulation. The vaginal contractions which accompany orgasm, as well, tend to stem from uterine contractions. This is all conjecture, of course, as I have no personal experience on the topic.
BTW, thanks to those who have commented on my latest pic... now if I can only work on smiling!
SD
A total hysto involves the removal of the cervix (as well as the uterus, ovaries, and all the tubing in between) but not everyone has a total hysto. It's possible to have less removed if you'd rather for some reason, though I think most guys have a total hysto for a number of reasons, including the fact that it removes the need to have smear tests.
:)
This may be an odd question, but I really don't know. Is it normal for a woman (not on T) to not get zits on her chest or back? I get breakouts in both places- sometimes with large ones- for years now. I never thought anything of it but reading these comments I get the impression this isn't the norm. ??? Am I reading wrong?

Well, I think it depends on your age and your type of skin. Other factors like climate and type of clothing might come into play. But I hope someone else answers; I can't really speak from personal experience, and I have no medical training.
I used to break out on my back and chest once a month (I think you can guess the cause). They just became more prevalent, though less severe, once I started T.

Mine seem to have no rhyme or reason. I don't get them during any particular time of the month, the weather, sweating, etc. I always have small ones on my chest and some on my back. You can't really see them on my back because of my backpiece but you can feel them. I always thought it was normal because my Dad has them too. Listen to me, comparing a male to see what's normal for my body. :P
found this website the other day: www.ftmaustralia.org (//http://)
it has a list of all the effects of T and which ones are permanet. to save you time (i wrote them all down then) here's the majority of it:
voice keeps the pitch of when you stop
facial hair only grows in patches that you have gotten
muscle and fat become more fem.
clitoris stays enlarged
menstrual cycle returns (if overies are still intact)
hope this info helps!!!
Thanks for the responses. :)

Yup. I get even wetter. My gf has been with close to a dozen ftms and she says that wetness increased after starting T for most of them.
It's weird that so many of you say the lubrication thing increased... when I was researching effects, everything I read said it would decrease and for me that has, in fact, been the case.

i think the increase has to do with the being horny all of the time and being hornier in general.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I never used to lubricate in very satisfactory ways. Then I reached, er, menopause, and things got even worse. I was pret-ty arid down there. My tissue down there got really fragile, too. Sex hurt.
On T, there's no pain, and I lubricate a lot. A LOT.
I have no idea what the long-term effects will be. Most guys who have been on T for ten years or more probably don't lurk around here. If they do...well, I'd like to know about their experiences if they're willing to share.
I have questions about hair growth and T. All my hair grows slow and has always grown slow. Head hair, armpit, legs- you name it. Once on T did anyone notice their body hair growing faster and get longer (like on the arms)? Also, how long did it take you to develop body hair? I'm looking forward to body hair, but I might not get much. The males in my family tend to not have much body hair.
the hair on my head has always grown fast and is the same on T now. my body hair however, changed texture and grows faster. im also growing more hair in more places.

I certainly hope so!!!! But, seriously, yes.

I noticed, er more hair down
there fairly quickly--in under two months. That's front and back, by the way. Is that TMI? No, you asked...anyway, I wasn't constantly looking for these signs, so I can't be sure exactly how long they really took to happen.
I noticed the beginnings of a happy trail, and belly hair generally, at around two months.
The hair on my calves, I really can't tell. There might be more, and I'm pretty sure it's longer. But recently (after about three and a half months), I did notice more and coarser hair on my thighs. It's probably been coming in for a couple of weeks, but I wasn't paying much attention.
My arms are much slower to get hairy. About six weeks into T, I noticed that I could see my pores (never could before) and that darker hair was growing out of them. But that hair is still very short and sparse. It's a bit darker, that's all. Not enough for anyone else to notice.
I should point out that my father is fairly hairy. I'm not sure about my brother, and I have no other close male relatives.
Thanks Arch. And no, it wasn't TMI. I'm trying to learn what I can. My arm hairs are very light so I'm hoping they grow out longer to look more like men's arms then women's. I believe that's an important visual clue when someone's trying to decide if someone's male or female. I look forward to the extra body hair too (except back hair). :D
i was very hairy pre t but have defnatly gotten even hairier since i have been on it coming up for 12 weeks on t now.
i'm loving it...lol not just the increased body hair which to be honest i really don't need, i just feel so much better.
i have noticed quite a few other changes too not least that my voice is much deeper now which is major for me as it is one of the things that was so important to me.
good luck to you all and i hope you all have as enjoyable results as i am having from T...
I sorta skimmed through towards the end, but teh Susans Wiki has answers *had to look it up for a guy I know* lol.
