Title: Someone\'s starting some video dialogue
Post by: Pica Pica on April 27, 2009, 12:44:30 PM
This is weegerri, sie's got some ideas about my videos and ideas.

(Part 1 of 2) Re: What An Androgyne Isn't (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yC-fWwQBCkI#lq-lq2-hq-vhq)

I thought there was some good stuff, especially about 'fault or feature', i found that really good - that I, especially in my extemporary videos talk about androgyne-ity as a fault of a person, I think that's more a catch of my use of words and sometimes
rather negative approach to myself, but a very fair point indeed, something to watch out for.

I thought the stuff about the word 'androgyne' was cracking a walnut with a car crusher until sie explains why sie doesn't like the way i pronounce androgyne  - and a fair enough point too.

the last bit i have more trouble with mind you.  ::)

what jew think?

I think sie has hijacked the word androgyne and excluded us. In that case I don't care how sie pronounces it (though around here gynecology is pronounced with a hard g, and doesn't refer to something needing removal).

Wondering what box refers to me, I stumbled upon the word:

"gynandromorph |gīˈnandrəˌmôrf; jinˈan-|
noun Zoology & Medicine
an abnormal individual, esp. an insect, having some male and some female characteristics."

So I thought, maybe by extension a gynandroid might refer to one whose ID is neither m nor f, though the body or presentation might not be perfectly centered. And gynandroid could be pronounced with hard or soft g.

We seem to be a functioning, vibrant group (pronounced with hard g, not needing to be removed). Weegerri seems to want to define us in a way that divides us into those exactly like hir, and those who don't or shouldn't exist.

As for fault or feature, my sense of what you have said, Pica, is not that androgyny is a fault, but that it can cause problems in social interaction.

Other that the points above, I may agree with the video,
S

Weegerri loses me at the beginning of that presentation of that argument, using a "transsexual" who lives and presents as their birth sex as an example: you don't think of that as transsexualism, right?  Actually, I do.  There are so many different definitions for various words that good argument (as opposed to arguments cause by confusion) can be difficult.

Sorry all, but I thought WeeGerri talked a lot of sense, and frankly I loved her video. After decades of thinking I was and being diagnosed as TS MTF, I'm beginning to think I'm Androgyne and that's where I want to be...

I'm not sure which part you're referencing. All I heard was a big lecture on pronunciation and informing people they look like a man.

yeah. it would've been better on its own and not served as a breaking down of someone else's video down to the pronunciation.

oh on part two, i couldn't get past the 'please don't take my label away from me'.
but there were some good heart felt gender points and experiences there.
i think somehow sie has misinterpreted Pica as trying to monopolize the word 'androgyne'.

I like much of what sie says in hir videos. Sie brings up an interesting question, for those who don't dress/express androgynous, what does being an androgyne mean?

I can answer this for myself, I not only think of myself internally as an androgyne but I also feel drawn to express myself in an androgynous way. Unfortunately it isn't always possible to do this safely in a binary world and so I don't always appear androgynous as far as my clothing choices.

The only part of the video I didn't get is where sie says Pica looks like a man. I don't see that at all, Pica seems very androgynous in expression and mannerisms.

I could be wrong, but I suspect that Weegerri is somewhat attracted to Pica and creating an argument just to make contact. Certain references (ginger hair, etc.) and the invitation to respond lead me to this ideal. It is per typical of a girl trying to get a guys attention.

However, there are several good points brought up. Such as being an androgyne is something felt internally and may or may not be expressed outwardly.

I could be wrong, I could be right....But that's the way I see it

That's what I felt while watching that. The whole first half of the video, sie was being a little too dramatic.
Really, though, the pronunciation is sort of a po-tay-to po-tah-to thing.

While we're on the subject of pronunciation, do you say the letter i in your name long or short? Pie-ca  or Pick-a?

Truethfully I've thought that some things in relation to picas vid on what an androgyne isn't do block out what are important astects of some peoples identity.
me I have an Androgyness gender identity I need to express myself in an androgyness way because I am an an androgyne
I know not all androgynes are the same.
maybe the differances are that pica is a pre gendered androgyne (I think sie has used that term) while weegerri is more likely pan or inter -gendered androgyne (only sie can make that choice)

well there you go, the video doesn't block you out. "me I have an Androgyness gender identity " that counts as in.

All the video says is that androgynous dressing is not androgyne... that people adopting an androgynous appearance (especially as a way of being different or individual) or not necessarily androgynes - unless they have an androgynous identity to go with it.

I mean David Bowie and Marc Bolan and Bryan Ferry and The New York Dolls may have all dressed androgynously but that doesn't make them androgynes. They were pop performers using androgynous as a way of standing out. That's all the video was saying, that the clothes aren't all there is to it.

finally someone as pointed out the correct pronociation of the bloody word at last :0) though i did think it was a little excesive way of doing it, also i do hope it shows people that there is more than one way of being androgynous as picas does too and that not everyone deals with it the same way which as to be a good thing in the end, all the bickering about which is right is rubbish and everyone is intitled to there view personally i hate the use of sie/hir and all that as it makes no difference to me. just a word like androgyne is. i am presenting inbetween genders and when someone asks what i am or why im doing that other than me saying im being myself i say im androgynous as most people understand that as being both or inbetween genders and they seem happy with that. maybe someone should post a vid of what a androgyne is and show us all living our lives the way we do thats what an androgyne is, its just someone living there lifes the best they can.

I am off to move packages at UPS now (clad in jeans, T-shirt, and work boots), but wanted to take a moment to participate. Weegerri's second video evidenced tolerance and a sense of humor. Episode three should expand on what sie means by an androgyne "way of life" (other than clothing).

Two reasons for dressing in more conventional style: being introverted (no bumper stickers on my car, either), and not wanting my clothing to monopolize the conversation. A third: why should I look more girly than my life. I also want clothes that look good on my body type.

Now I have to rush,

Do kilts meet muster as androgynous dress?

Post Merge: April 29, 2009, 10:36:00 AM

While working I was thinking about androgynous clothing. I've been married 21 years, and before that for 24 years to another woman. Of myself, my wife and ex-wife, I am the one currently with nail polish on toes, and I am the one with the longest hair (my wife thinks I should do something different with my hair but knows not what since she's never had long hair). On the other hand, I am the bearded one. Only rarely do any of us wear a trace of makeup. I keep everything I need for the day in my purse, and my wife keeps keys and money in her pockets (and misplaces them regularly).

My wife and I are both 18s on top so we sometimes share T-shirts. Our inseams are similar, but our hips are not, which means while we don't have to move the seat when we switch drivers, we cannot exchange pants. In any case, I prefer all-cotton and she, the softer feel of synthetics. When we travel, she asks if I think she needs to bring a skirt (frankly, I never have a good answer when she asks what I think she should wear--any advise welcome). Not infrequently, we both wear tops of the same color: pink polo shirts or blue T-shirts

She wears jewelry, but generally that consists of a necklace of pearls set as a six-pointed asterisk (in lieu of engagement ring), a six-pointed star necklace, a necklace with the tablets of the covenant, and a wedding ring (copied from the one Paul Revere made for his second wife). I wear none. Last year, we used my UPS benefits to buy similar eyeglasses from the same store.

Maybe I am stealth dressing androgynously. I feel no need to appear more feminine than my wife.

Such are my thoughts at this moment,
S

I wear the classic chav chain, a low carrot gold plated, thin gold chain by Elizabeth Duke of Argos.  It was my 18th (and last) birthday present from my Dad's parents who died afterwards. I also would like to find a necklace that looks like one of those candy necklaces, but not made of plastic.

No. someone should post a vid of an androgyne taking a bath. That would pop me peepers.

I saw a crime show where some guy kept putting things in his mouth and gnawing on them. A doctor said "He has piecarism"  he pronounced it PIE rather than pea. I use pea in Pica because is thought it would be like Costa Rica.

[I altered my initial post to replace 'pee' with 'pea' in order to not sound like a freak]

Now, who wants to bath with me?

Speaking of horror epics, here are two photos, courtesy of my iMac, just now. The blue shirt came from the women's department, the petal pink from the men's. When I was twenty, I feared everyone could look at me and see I was a girl inside. Now there is no way I can look as androgynous as you or weegerri.

I would not have known you to be the same person as in your avatar.

I don't think you need to do anything with your hair, I like it.
You could go to the trouble of putting it up, maybe some plats like Willie Nelson or native American Indian style. But if you are happy with it and it does not get in the way leave it where it is.

I like my longish hair, comes down to my collar bone. For work I tend to tie it back in a pony tail or a messy bun, sometimes with a headband to keep back the strays. I also recently got a 'condor' clip and it is surprisingly easy and elegant to use it to tie back your hair - just sort of gather your hair low like a ponytail, twist it then clip back up against the back of your head).

I like your 'library', looks just like my computer room.

The avatar is ten years old. Change slips up on one, doesn't it?

In public and mostly at home, too, I wear my hair in a ponytail.

My wife and I are inveterate book collectors. The walls of our bedroom are lined with bookcases (leaves very little room for clothes). There are bookcases on the stairway landing, in the living room, dining room, kitchen, alcove outside the bathroom, and in the basement. My wife is not careful to reshelve so there are also piles of books everywhere (not including the half dozen I am reading--I am slow and easily distracted).

The view in the pictures shows a corner of my basement office. My main computer sits on an antique rolltop desk, I bought used in Detroit in the 1960s. Behind me, is a reference shelf, a computer manual shelf, and my foreign language collection (German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish mainly). Just out of sight are the poetry books. I must have everything Sylvia Plath wrote--and R.S. Thomas, the Welsh priest. Upstairs, we have five full height cases of religious books, and three half-high of cookbooks, etc. Amazingly enough, I can find the book I seek most of the time.

And now, clad in button-down shirt, hair neatly in ponytail, Grumpy mug in hand, I salute you Nicky.

I love your hair Simone! You should wear it without the pony tail more often! I should talk though since I usually tie mine back too.

Is that photoshop, or has not a single book changed position in a decade?

Simone said that the avatar was a decade ago, not the previous pictures.
I think you're looking good, the Willie Nelson thing is good. You could easily get away with plaits like that.

We are all the beautiful people.

Even if Tekla misunderstood me, I got to thinking, as a result, why I keep all these books. The internet replaces many reference volumes in my daily life. It came to me in the shower, where else could I find something like a rare treasured poem. Let me read you one--see what you think; this is Concessions by R.S. Thomas (I do love to read aloud).

Not that he brought flowers
Except for the eyes' blue,
Perishable ones, or that his hands,
Famed for kindness were put then
To such usage; but rather that, going
Through flowers later, she yet could feel
These he spared perhaps for my sake.

Without those words, something would be missing from my life.

Anyway. I didn't post pictures to fish for compliments, though I blush that you friends responded with such nice words. Pica requested pictures of androgynes, and I thought there should be some of peeps who, unlike Pica and weegerri, look silly crossdressing and have bodies rarely mistaken for the opposite sex.

I presume all you other beautiful people, including self-deprecators like Jaimey and Rebis, sent photos and clips to Pica, perhaps in plain brown wrappers. Note to Pica: let me know who you're missing, and I will get after them--discretely, of course. I can't wait to view Androgynes on Parade; that will be so neat.

An aside to you business types: once again, I note a demand for a service to androgynes allowing us to exchange body parts. Breasts and functional tear ducts for some of the male-bodied; square and cleft chins and stiff upper lips for some of the female-bodied; and so on.

Company coming, so tonight it's roast beef grilled on the Weber,
S

Hey, if it wasn't for misunderstanding I'd have no understanding at all.  Or as my mom used to say "You understand wrong."

I thought those photos were from different times, I see now they were not.

I used to have all those books, lost them in the divorce - part of what one of my friends called "Instant Budahahood"

I see your "Instant budahood" and raise you "a chunk of ancient greek philosophy"

I think Socrates said true wisdom comes from knowing that you know nothing. At least that is what he said in Bill and Teds Excellent adventure  :D

But I think he was wrong. I would say true wisdom is knowing that you do know something, but not everything.

On that note my piece of wisdom for the day is "Eating nice food is nice". You can quote me on that. ;)

Nice nails ZZ! I liked looking through your Pics, you are very lovely!

Well now, if everyone else is posting pictures, I will too!  I have a new haircut!  We are the beautiful people!  I'm going to put that on a shirt...

I call this one, "I wanted to show off my new haircut, but why am I making such a weird face?"  :P

(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi269.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fjj48%2Fjaimey_1982%2FIMG_1573-1.jpg&hash=6e901905e2084366b7faa1e0fd0b2037c593bd13)

I mean, really?  What's with the look?  I wonder if I make that face in real life...of course, if I could get someone else to take a decent photo of me, I'd be all set, but they never turn out well when someone else does it...hmm...at any rate, that's me with my hair chopped off.

On the first video, after going on about how smart sie is, and how sie can buy books, and all of hir life experiences - it all seemed a little....... condescending. The remark about pica not being an androgyne because of hir clothes and lifestyle ("living like a man") was out of bounds.

The second video seemed like more of the same. Has the "->-bleeped-<-r than thou" argument (more androgyne than thou?) bantered about on other parts of the board really reached into the androgyne forum now? Never thought i'd see the day. We're a pretty open and accepting group.

I don't dress androgynously. No one can tell by looking at me that i'm an androgyne. And that's fine, and it doesn't make me any less of an androgyne. Being an androgyne is on the INSIDE, as are most forms of GID, and anything on the outside is just an expression of what's on the inside, should one choose to express themselves that way.

FTW - I gave Peter Murphy a personal tour of the Fillmore Art Collection (I'm the resident Fillmore historian), after which, he came over and sat down at the table with me for dinner.  On Halloween.

The show opened with two girls, looking for all the world like the Addams Family, playing Bella on cello, and Peter hanging upside down in a bat cape.

Ok, so with weegerri's pronunciation, how would one pronounce "androgen"?

...and this is where it becomes a bit confusing, because I'm on anti-androgens... ??? But it's not a cure to being Androgyne... :-\ Should this just make be less tolerant of myself? :o ...Oi...

Thanks for sharing your reply video Pica! It's really comforting to put a personality and voice to the disembodied/sterile forum presentation... You're very likeable... :D

Likeable? Awww Thanks. I thought the fact I had to edit it down made me sound a little out of it.

- This is a very tenuous 'gother than thou', but my uncle used to have his drums set up by Robert Smith.

I wanted to say: "Loveable"... But sounds too cheesy and insincere...
Maybe a little frustrated (oh, this again... can't we just be... agh... have to justify myself... again...) but definitely not "out of it"...

You know, Simone, the more I look at you, the more you look like a guru.  I bow to you, oh wise one.

One of my favorite stories is as follows:
When his teacher the holy Yehudi died, Rabbi Bunam remained in the town of Pzhysha. Once when his wife was sitting at the window, she saw a carriage full of people stop in front of their house. She ran to her husband and cried: "Bunam, a whole carriage-load of hasidim has come to you!"
"What are you thinking of," he said. "You know that that's not my business." But an hour later, when they had all left, he said to her: "There's no helping it. I cannot hold out against it any longer. The moment they came in, I knew the needs and wishes of every one of them."

I just looked out the front door and did not see a carriage full of people. I take that as an indication that I am not a rebbe, sage, or guru.

Peace be upon you, child,
S

Simply in response to Weegerri's video; He seems to assume that androgyne can only mean 1 thing or the other, when in fact it is another broader term. It's stupid to think that you need to absolutely transition to be considered an androgyne. Everyone's mental states are different and you can't dismiss those that aren't as prone to physical expression, among other things.

You are androgyne or aren't based on your identity. Whether you can handle transitioning or not doesn't have to do with the term.
