Title: Odd problem with my avatar.
Post by: TooManyToasters on May 15, 2009, 09:26:32 PM
This is what I'm using for my avatar:
(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fa.random-image.net%2Ftoomanytoasters%2Fkristophavatarfixed.jpg&hash=80976da42321a11a87417d03c6ba743324b13d71)
Every time the page is loaded, it's one of 11 different images. Refresh the page once or twice and it'll change. However, for some strange reason, this one...

...is the only one that ever shows up. This is not a problem with the image or the site it's hosted on; I'm using it on 2 other sites and it works fine. So either it's a ridiculous coincidence that it shows up with this one every time I look at it, or the site isn't displaying it properly.
It's not like the fate of the world depends on this. I doubt there's really a way to fix this, and I like the one it's stuck on anyway, but it's really strange and I hope I can get it working like it's supposed to.

That does not seem surprising to me. It looks like the SMF server is caching the first image it got.

When you set your avatar, you must have used the I will upload my own picture option.
For what you want, you should use the I have my own pic option.

The result was that you uploaded a single image on Susan's instead of just specifiying a URL.

The site download the avatar and caches it locally. therefore it doesn't ever refresh. You would have to make it into an animated gif with a 5-10 second delay between images changing for it to work as you wish.

Nope. I used the "I have my own pic" option.
But, it seems Susan solved the mystery. Thanks. I guess I'll just leave it like this.

The goal is to simplify the load for users. If you have 20 posts each using a image stored on a different remote server, one or more of them could be down at a time causing significant pauses for pages to load. This way the images are all stored here. If we are up the images are up. If we are down you won't be accessing the site anyway.
