What do you do about filling in forms and job applications? (regarding name and gender)
I hate putting in my female details, but I'm always too scared to put male name and stuff.
I just don't wanna get in trouble or cause any confusion. If I fill in a job application with my chosen name rather than official birth name, are they gonna know?
No one's going to want to hire someone that causes so much trouble just with their application form!
Thanks :)
They ask for ID and a social security card. Always use your legal name on legal documents or anything you sign. Other wise it can be a cause of identity theft.

Try fraud.
Worst case scenario. You get the job. Later you update your info officially or for security* reasons have to fill out a new app. Because you "lied" on the initial app your terminated/
The *= after 9/11 those with sensitive jobs/ security clearances were required to resubmit apps, than FBI background checks were done. People who had worked for the same company for 20+ years were fired. The answers to drug use and minor criminal offenses didnt match the one from back in the day.
In the US employers should be be submitting your name, ssn and gender marker to Social Security. If you do not have your legal information on the forms it will come up as a no match which could jeopardize your job.
this is what I do for the name:
atkison, f. Keisha "kody"
just so that they also have the name that you go by...then they should ask you what name you want on your nametag...
Ah, that's a good idea :) Thanks!
your best bet is to use your first initial, even if they want your legal name. that way any documents you DON'T want or need your name on don't show up later. TRUST ME, i've been through this, and it just confuses people cuz they don't know what the hell to call you. using your initials is NOT fraud, if they match!! the old man i work with used his FIRST initial only, and goes by his middle name. all documents just say his first initial. put your full name if you want, but in the end, it will probably bite you in the ass. make absolutely sure they know you want to be Kody and nothing else, my employer NEVER asked me what i wanted on my badge until TWO years later. and even then it's still not what i NEED , it's a COMPROMISE!!! take my advice, cuz i recently had to talk to the head of my hr department. i got bit, and i don't want to see it happen to anyone else!!!!
To bad most names are gender specific, unlike Terry, Chris, or even Shannon just to name a few, I can't think of any other gender neutral names although you could always say something like "what can I say my parents wanted a girl" sorta like the boy named Sue :)

There no possible way I will put "M" on my applications. They can straighten it out between HR and SSA.

I've never filled out a job ap where it doesn't say that false information will result in termination.

these aren't job applications. and two like i stated earlier initials are NOT false information. my former boss said he'd rather have someone put what they want to be called on the app to begin with.
"Apps" often have the "nickname" or "name known by" section also.

some do but not all. supposedly mine did but they never ever bothered to ask me till two years later, so just because it's on there doesn't mean they'll honor it.

Which is why it's often best to leave the gender marker blank ;)... no lies that way.
I think my point was don't lie about your legal status... ultimately you WILL be outed if your gender marker isn't changed. So best, as you say, to deal with HR after the hire.

In Minnesota they are not allowed to ask your sex on the application. The only place they can ask it are the EEOC forms, and there the information is voluntary.
I put mr and male as that is what the rest of my documents say!

Which clearances, which jobs, specifically? It didn't happen like you said where I worked. I first got a clearance in 2000... I didn't need to do another SF-86 until the regular 5-year renewal came up in 2005... in between there was no resubmitting anything.
When I transitioned in 2007, though, they made me do a new SF-86. Apparently a name & gender change is a weightier security issue than terrorists knocking down tall buildings.

since terrorists didn't knock down tall buildings, i suppose that puts your comparison out of perspective.

a handful of people took over planes full of people with boxcutters and flew them into specific targets after only flying cessnas? yeah, right.
Speaking of hijacks, Mister... ::)
a handful of people took over planes full of people with boxcutters and flew them into specific targets after only flying cessnas? yeah, right
And then, not one, not two, but three buildings all fell down exactly in their own footprint.
And, despite prior attacks on the WTC, and despite finding terrorists with plans to do exactly what happened on 9-11, and despite a direct warning by C. Rice just a few weeks earlier directly to G. Bush - all fighter planes were ordered to stand down, and not a single fighter was available to defend NYC?
And, for perhaps the only time in its 8 year history the Bush Administration told everyone everything they know, the entire truth and the whole truth right from the start.
Hey, can I sell you some land in Florida, a bridge in New York, and I've got some real good diamonds here for sale too?
And, as for forms, make sure they all match. And understand that all changes to forms, licenses, and official documents are noted, and anyone who knows what they are looking for can find the change memos, and prior documents.
1 Hypatia... Power industry, in particular nuclear.
2. Why don't you guys start a 9/11 conspiracy thread?

I've been though two security clearance checks, one back in the 80s under Reagan, pre-computer age and for the most part before anyone cared near as much as they do now, and one in the early 90s for the DoE/DoD. They not only find out everything, they find out things you didn't even know. The power of the federal gov when it comes to getting information on people is way beyond awesome. Make sure it all matches, and know that anything you are trying to hide, they are going to find.
Also every app/form I have ever filled out contains the line, "other names known by, including legal name changes."
The sad fact is for every 1 of us, there is probably at least a 1000 people trying to cover up something "bad" from their past.
Sadder fact, anyone who is a deep stealth existence where they are afraid of their past status being reveled are exactly what they are looking for as that's a set-up to blackmail.
I just do not write my former ''male names'' at least to healtcare people and I might get some decent treatment in private sector.

if you know your name will be on computers for others to see, i STRONGLY suggest using first initials, otherwise it WILL come back to bite you in the ass. i speak from NUMEROUS personal experiences. just because you want to go by something, MANY more peoplr than u realize will BLATANTLY refuse to call you what you prefer. i went through this same damned situation again with my hr manager today with me sitting there with her just repeatedly using male pronouns. i'm seriously trying to tell ALL of your hr is NOT always your friend, they're just as bad or worse than everyone else!!!
i'm trying EXTREMELY hard to save people from some of the crap i go through because there is no other jobs around here, it's this or unemployment.
i just wish for once at least ONE transperson would listen to me, and use my advice wisely.
or you could just change your name and be rid of the headache.

I do appreciate your advice. I didn't know it was possible to just put down your first initial. don't they check that stuff? I had to give references from old jobs and such, wouldn't they find out my name then? also I live in a pretty accepting area, I have yet to have someone just blatantly disrespect me and call me by my birth name
and yeah I am working on changing my name, I'm waiting for my birth certificate in the mail

In the meantime, you can get an updated ID in MA by having your doctor fill out a form.

they may find out your "old or current" name by old employers, because just cause you send them a letter saying you've changed it doesn't mean they will. they will also find out when they ask for id and ssn cards if applicable, but it will only be put in the computer system the way you put it on your application. if you put your full legal name that's what they will put in the system and that is who you will be to everyone who sees it ALWAYS.
also, i was referring to some of the trans people who don't have the luxury of having a doctor fill out a form saying such things as so and so has changed genders and would like to change their name to so and so for all legal purposes. i think that's great for those that have that option, but in places, like Ohio, Tennesee and others this kind of thinking is so far off in the future that it isn't even likely to happen in my lifetime. I want to go by Mekayla at work, but the head of HR said NO!! because it wasn't my legal name and people wouldn't be able to associate Mickie and Mekayla as the same person, which not even two days later my point was made that it was possible. but it's like this, if you start as one that is who you will be to everyone until you leave. the people i REALLY want to call me Mekayla blatanly refuse and don't address me at all.
i was starting to get money saved so i could have my name changed, once again i got financially screwed. i'm happy for those of you that do get your name changed, i really am, but at the moment, i am screwed beyond screwed and there is absolutely no help in this entire state as far as i know to help with my situation. i've asked an OSU associate who deals with our issues.

My post was to Chamillion, who lives in Massachusetts and can use this legislation to his advantage.
We're all pretty familiar with your situation, but thanks for the recap.
Thanks Mister for the info. It shouldn't be too long before I get my birth certificate, it's only supposed to take about a week. I have a note from my therapist for the RMV to get my gender changed on my license, so I think I'll just wait til I've changed my name and get it all done at once, save money that way
omg Mekayla i am so sorry. i thought ohio would have been better about the whole name change thing. cant you get a DL in a state next to yours so you can change your name with ease?
the closest state to me would be indiana, and last i knew you had to physically live there for 30 days or six months, don't know which anymore. but either way, i don't have the money to move, let alone the 25 or more bux to buy the new license...lol and last i knew you still have to have a court ordered name change i think in all surrounding states, but i can't b sure..
oh we may have a democratic governor, and it may have voted dem in the last prez election, but most everyone in my area are straight out Religious Reich Republicans, i got seriously dirty looks from the girl behind the desk when i got my license back two years ago, she didn't address me cuz she new if she offended me in some way i'd probably have her job--for once she was smart--at least concerning her employment. and most of the laws in this state are very successfully religiously influenced. but so i don't offend any one else, i'll quit typing in a few.
i'm about to quit offering my advice and support on this forum cuz it only seems to be not wanted by some members.
