It's been awhile since I've posted here everyone. I wanted to say that things have actually been going fairly well for me lately. I'm gainfully employed and catching up on my finances, I'm making plans for the future, and best of all, my mother and I have been finally communicating and understanding each other much better about my ->-bleeped-<-. I'm making plans to join a therapy group and possibly seek one-on-one counseling as I prepare to get my transition back on track.
Now that I'm speaking with my mother about this issue more openly, I have a question: do you all have any recommendations for good reading material on ->-bleeped-<- and transsexuality?
Specifically, my mother wants some literature on the subject so she knows more about it and we can discuss this more at length. Wat I'd like is something authoritative, yet doesn't read like a bloody textbook. Something that we can go over together and I can explain and clarify things piece by piece with her as we do so.
Any recommendations would be VERY helpful for this. Thanks again, everyone!
People might nit-pick, but this is still the best general overview to transsexualism:
True Selves: Understanding Transsexualism: For Families, Friends, Coworkers, and Helping Professionals (1996)
Mildred L. Brown * Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/dp/0787967025) * WorldCat (http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/51437864)
I see it at my library! Thank you VERY much!
I'll pick it up right now! (No time like the present, hehe. ;) )
I'm also happy to hear any other suggestions anyone might have.
Right now, I'm reading "Transgender History" by Susan Stryker. So far (I'm in the last chapter) it seems more like a history of socio-political issues that TG/TS folks encounter. But, it does seem to be a great overview type of book, and the language is very accessible.
I agree with Renate. True Selves gives a good and accurate study of transsexualism, and uses quotes from many mtf and ftm transsexuals. When I read it I discovered so many things that I could identify with and found it very useful in affirming my own condition.
I agree with Renate. I am in the middle of reading "Trueselves" . It is enlightening and informative. And it doesn't bog down with all the technical aspects that some of the others throw out to you. I highly recommend it. Dylen
I have read "Transgender History" and it is informative. Another good book is "My Husband Betty" by Helen Boyd.
