Riot Grrrl is a feminist cultural movement started by young women in the early 1990s, centered around punk rock known as grrrl punk. Bands like:

Grrrl punk rocks on, and the other night I went to see the Shondes, one of the newer punk bands, which mostly consists of trans or genderqueer people, except the lead singer...

I wish I had a nickel for every time I've been told women are supposed to wear pants. And young women, especially, are all supposed to wear jeans, it's like a uniform. People have actually tried to discourage me from wearing skirts and dresses. In particular, feminism has been associated with disapproval of feminine fashions. Also, women in rock-'n'-roll, especially hard rock genres, tend to wear jeans.
Riotgrrrl fashion turned all that on its head. Admittedly grrrl punks still wear jeans a lot, but it's curious to me how prevalent skirts and dresses are for young feminist punk women. Well, I just thought that was interesting.
In the street or beach, I see most of ladies wear long trousers or hot pants. I think it is a kind of trend here. Even in Figure skating, trousers look more sensational.

My musical tastes run more toward Prokofiev than punk, but my fashion sense runs the gamut. To hell with anyone who says a skirt is too "girly" -- how is that not sexist in itself? I definitely know several women who fit this category, and I love how they all have a unique style that completely suits them and isn't intended to fit anyone else's stereotypes.
despite being in my late 30s i've been guilty of trying to relive my lost riot grrrl youth. 60s minidresses and motorcycle boots, that kind of thing. it's a good look - just not on me:)
