Title: College worries regarding transition
Post by: findingreason on August 06, 2009, 10:38:41 PM
Ok, so now that college is around the corner, I have new things to worry about. I have a single dorm thankfully, so nobody in my room to worry about with transition. But I'm pretty sure I'll be in male quarters, so that includes sharing shower quarters too. Any suggestions for this? Especially if I am on HRT, and start developing physically, this could be a problem.

Any college students around here that have advice? (there's more I was worrying about....but it's not coming to my mind yet)

I'm in college too. If you are concerned about using showers and such, the place to go is your Dean of Students office. I personally chose to inform my Resident Director of the issue as I expect to start presenting some time next year.

As far as everything else, college is the perfect environment to transition in. Other than the fact that you can get free counseling (at least, my school does this), everyone is very accepting of everything. I'm even thinking of making a trans club next month.

Oh I wanna go to your club Kara! I lub clubs.

Hi Findingreason! I'm so glad you seem to be feeling better. I've been away for a couple weeks but I sent ya good thoughts.

Anyway personally I would think about finding a roomie or two and live off campus. I was actually out looking at places for fall term earlier and if you split the bill two ways and aren't fickel it comes out pretty evenly financially.

Hey findingreason!  Also in college here.  :)

This is my transition schedule:
Nov 2008 - Started HRT
Jan 2009 - Started Laser hair removal, but I began growing facial hair at 17 so I didn't need too much.
Sept-Nov 2009 - Planning to get several FFS procedures done, possibly SRS.

This summer was when I began to be passable as female, and I had pretty fast breast growth.  Unfortunately I was attending a local private college where they could have and probably would have dismissed me for coming out as trans, so I did my best to hide it.  I was living with my parents so I could save up money to transition.

I'm being a little cowardly this semester by taking it off to get some FFS and hopefully SRS outside the US if I can save up to it (if not then I'll wait till next April).  At the start of the new year I'm transferring to the largest public uni in my state, where I can sort of blend in among the tens of thousands of students.

I'm also a bit confused about my dorm situation.  If I get SRS, will I be able to get a roomie?  I'd really love to know.  I've scraped together every penny from years of jobs & school loans to finance Laser/FFS/SRS, so I doubt if I can afford an expensive single dorm.

Thanks for all the advice everyone!

I think I may talk to my residence director or the dean soon about this. I don't know what is going to happen in the next months but I'm going to take the plunge into the unknown. I can't move off campus; my school is requiring me to live on campus for the first couple years.

findingreason, you should talk to your Resident Director and the people over at the Housing/Resident Life Office at your school, as Kara suggested.  I transitioned in college, actually went full-time my second year there after being on hormones for 6 months.  Over the summer I worked with the Resident Director on campus on a gender-neutral suite in one of the residence halls (I was already working on a gender-neutral campus campaign at the time), and that fall I moved in to the suite.  They were very accommodating, and I had my own room, and although I shared the suite with other roommates (ended up being all girls too, on the girl's side of the floor), there were never any problems, including the shower situation.

Best of luck!
