Title: Myra Breckinridge is a fun read!!
Post by: Miss LXC 2.0 on August 11, 2009, 03:20:58 PM
I only recently discovered the book by Gore Vidal "Myra Breckinridge". It was published in the 60's. I found it quite entertaining. I know there was a movie where Raquel Welch played the lead role so I am DVD hunting for it.

Raquel played the after, Rex Reed played the before.

It was a horrible, HORRIBLE movie.  It wasn't faithful to the book and did not tell it's own story.

I did not find MB that interesting.  I felt Myra was a sympathetic character to begin with but her anger overshadowed her sympathy.  I think Vidal used the transsexual aspect simply to add a titillation factor.  It was hardly an accurate depiction of transsexuality, then or now.

Update:
Here is the IMDB listing of it.  The reviewer there is much more, er, gracious, than I.  I still think it sucked:

It's also available on BlockBuster.

Enjoy(?)

Accurate? Probably not. Most definately a work of fiction.

Entertaining? It was for me.

Gore is kind of an acquired taste I guess, but I like him.  I like the non-fiction stuff myself, but MB is ok.
