A female inmate serving time in a B.C. men's prison is demanding Corrections Canada approve her sex-change operation -- and pay for it.

In an application filed in the Federal Court of Canada, Katherine Anne Johnson, 61, said the operation to remove her penis -- a "penectomy" -- has been unreasonably delayed by Correctional Service of Canada.

Johnson also demanded to be transferred to a women's prison to keep her safe from attacks from other inmates.

In the court documents, Johnson is referred to as a woman. Reports from authorities defending the decision to keep Johnson in a men's prison refer to her as "Ms. Johnson."

The third murderer petition in three weeks? All from different places? Must be a trend.

Well if this is approved I would certainly understand an increase in the "T" populations of our prisons.  Commit a felony and get free SRS.  Why didn't I think of that.

As far as the funding is concerned I say NO.  The inmate should do their time become a productive member of society and suffer as many of us have funding their SRS.  My hard earned money funded my SRS, I'll not have my tax $ fund his.

If SRS is going to be funded by the state it should be for law abiding citizens, not some schmuck that happens to be in prison.

This.

Most of Canada does not fund SRS.  Only BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec do, however Ontario is on the verge of re-listing SRS as a medical treatment covered under its medical plan OHIP just have to get the provincial government the get their thumbs out of their butts..

Kavanagh vs. Canada Corrections (2001, 2003)
She would not be the first.
By the way she was hold at women's side in pre-trial center despite of not having undergone SRS.
There is a book about her life written years ago.

Matilda: NOBODY in the USA has ever get SRS while in prison. And you would not want to be in male prison waiting SRS years just to get the surgery.

Either you believe SRS "is medically indicated and medically necessary. Sex reassignment is not 'experimental,' 'investigational,' 'elective,' 'cosmetic', or optional in any meaningful sense. It constitutes very effective and appropriate treatment for transsexualism or profound GID" - (WPATH Standards of Care) or you don't. If it is medically indicated and necessary, that includes prisoners.  Withholding medical care to prisoners is not only unethical, it's immoral.

For Kavanagh it was ruled as medically necessery. (Actually she had SRS before the courtcase in 2000.) This may be a different situation.

Their crime was probably immoral as well... Wait a sec, my , my the poor thing is definitely getting a raw deal, dear me what were we thinking obviously the fact that

QuoteJohnson, who has a lengthy criminal record and is serving a life sentence for beating her roommate to death

deserves a second chance at life just like the second chance they gave their victims.

Nah let them rot in hell.

In this particular case I favor funding of the SRS.

That makes sense, if you treat ALL prisoners the same. So with all things being equal, and all prisoners getting health care, then yes they deserve to have the same care. Medically necessity isn't tempered by steel bars.
