AN EX-SOLDIER was so desperate to become a woman he performed a DIY sex change operation on himself.
When Roland Mery, a 61-year-old, married, father-of-four from Newport, was told he had to wait two years for gender reassignment surgery he decided he had no option but to do the job himself.
Telling his wife of 23 years, Julie, that he had a headache, Roland took some painkillers and headed for the family bathroom. Using a home-made surgery kit, he removed his genitals, losing two pints of blood in the process.
first of all...
AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!1!!
Second...
"When I was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital afterwards, the doctor told me I had actually done quite a good job!"
WTF!
I can totally relate to just wanting to cut them off but to actually do it myself??? Damn! :icon_yikes:
That is desperate. HHHHHUUUUUUUUMMMMM Where is that razor knife? :o
Janet
WOW that is drastic but at least she will feel all the better for it now!
I wish her all the luck!

what's a little sad, at least to me, is that all that material that she cut off will now never be used to give her female parts. How do they create 'em when they have don't have the male genitals to work with?
Ya know, I was thinking that too. It just seemed like such a waste. What gets me is that she was bold enough and desperate enough to just hack it off... That was a bold, brave and ill though out plan. I can't imagine that pain being any worse then waiting for a surgeon to do it right. If I was told that I had to wait two years for a surgeon I'd be looking for another one. Of course if it was a money issue that does change things a bit but still... Damn! :icon_yikes:
To me, this highlights what I see to be a pretty major flaw in the health care systems of countries who cover transgender surgeries-- excessive wait times. Had she been able to see a surgeon in a reasonable amount of time, she probably wouldn't have put her life in jeopardy by hacking off body parts.
You'd be surprised what ex military, especially those with med. training may get up to. Remember, they are trained to think in a move - do it now manner. To be put off for a year or two is unthinkable
Sadly, such self mutilation, while by no means common, occurs too often. What it must be like in countries that do not have SRS facilities.

Oh my that is desperate.
I'd like to hope that WPATH would take a serious look at this, as yet another reason to revise their stupid Standards of Care.

The UK NHS uses their own standard for transistion services.
Which isn't to say I don't agree with the notion that WPATH needs to quit the Oslo vacations/conferences and work on improving their SOC based on harm reduction and better post surgery support, rather then fixed "guidelines" that may or may not be suitable for the individual client based on what needs to be done when it comes to determining if they are ready for medical treatment. (just my 2 cents)

Being told to wait ~2 years does suck but if one is 61 years old, after 23 years of marriage, is it really so impossible to hang on for that extra time? So destitute and desperate to have to DIY in the bathroom? Clearly so for this individual. Seems a bit extreme to me but then I don't know what it's like to be in that position.
"Before police understood the nature of what had taken place, they regarded Julie as a suspect, the article said."
must have been a tough day for the wife too
i though my friend was weird when she pierced her own nipple... guess there's alwayse someone more um... i don't know the word i'm looking for, i can't think of a sympathetic one.
