Title: Barber shop that specifically says "Men's Hair Studio" in their title...
Post by: GamerJames on August 20, 2009, 10:54:48 AM
Hey guys, got a question here...

I need a haircut, so I was thinking of popping out at lunchtime and getting it done. A quick google map search popped up a few places nearby, but one of the closest ones (5 minute walk from my office) is specifically a "Men's Hair Studio".

My first thought was "awesome, I can get a decent hair cut for a good price" but then I got a little intimidated thinking what if they won't serve me? Like, it has "Men's" right in the title, and their website only shows men's, senior's and kid's prices.

My partner suggested I go and if they won't serve me, then I go somewhere else. I'm not sure if I'm secure enough right now for that kind of rejection. lol

There is another place that's even closer that does men's and women's cuts. They say "men's cut" in their price list, does that refer to if the haircut is a men's style? Or any style but done on a man's head? Because their men's prices are a little more expensive than the first place, but their women's prices are WAY more, so if they charge me women's prices cuz of what's in my pants instead of what's on my head, it'll be a rip off...

My other thought is that both salons list an email address on their website, I'm thinking that maybe if I fire off a quick email, and ask them outright... But I don't know if that just makes it even more awkward.

Anyhow, I'm looking for any comments/suggestions/advice that you've got. Fire away! :D

I went to a place that was a specifically male shop... however I gave them a male name and can manage to pass as a young boy (pubescent at best) but as I'm not actually all too too much older than that it seems to work just fine for now as long as Im an ->-bleeped-<- about smalltalk.

and the mens/womens cut is on a man/womens head... I'm afraid they're probably going to charge you the womens price if you're not passing/presenting as strictly male.

I'm "presenting" as male (already got a men's haircut - it's just ready for a trim again, wearing men's clothes - today shorts with very hairy legs, etc), but I don't pass 100%.

I get sir'd quite a bit, but by the time I talk, they're "correcting" themselves.

I'm hoping though that if I walk in presenting male and asking for a men's haircut in a men's hair studio, then whether they go "wait, that's 'really' a girl" or not, they'll still go ahead with the cut, since I'm very obviously not presenting as a girl in any way (other than the biological traits that I can't do anything about - yet)... If they see that I carry myself as a guy, dress like a guy, already have a guy's haircut, etc, and have INTENTIONALLY walked into a shop that very clearly is for MEN, then probably won't think "oh, this 'girl' doesn't know that we only cut men's hair", and they'll think "girl or not, 'she' is asking for a men's cut in a men's shop, so we might as well go ahead"... Maybe?

What do you think though, should I chance it, or just go somewhere else (and pay WAY more) since I don't pass 100%?

Barber shops don't typically serve women, unless she wants a high & tight.

You can get your hair cut there, but don't be surprised if you get weird looks.

I think it would be best to go into a unisex salon until your totally male looking

Uh... what's a "high & tight"?

Plus, I don't care if I get weird looks, I'm just wondering if they'll refuse service or if they'd just be like "whatever, 'she' wants a male hair cut, I'll give 'her' a male hair cut"...

They very well may.  It's hard to say for sure.  Either way, you're money's green, so...

Well, being that I'm in Canada, it's not green. ;D But yeah, I see what you're saying, it's probably a case-by-case basis.

And I looked up "high & tight" and unless you're talking about the circumcision style (lol)... then yeah, that's basically what I'm going for. Buzzed sides and back, short on top but not as short as sides and back are. Way shorter than what I've currently got though. (Although, on second look through google images, it seems that high & tight is shaved down to the skin on the sides/back? I guess what I'm going for is more of a crew cut/flattop?)

This site has photos of standard men's haircuts, and when you click the pic there is a description of the style, along with what to call it when you walk into the barber shop.  Hope it helps.

Thanks Jamie, that does help, even more than anything I found from tons of googling last month when I initially went to get my hair cut. Unfortunately the two pics I liked didn't have a specific name for those styles, but at least I can hold up my phone and say "like this pic". Although, is it just me or is that particularly girly thing to do (bringing a pic in)?

it seems like more of a stereotype that women walk in with a cute picture of a woman who's prettier and skinnier and they talk to the stylist about the style and say they want to look like that, then complain about their husbands and crazy teenaged kids and... now im just being ridiculous.

and it seems like men strut in proclaim they want a (manly named style) and plop down and talk about sports.

if it makes you feel better, i usually talk about what color i want my hair and talk about styles with the person, but im often percieved as a gay male, not a girl.  (even preT)

if you want to do the picture thing, i suggest going to the place that does mens and womens hair, but make sure the picture you show them is of a male with a mens cut.  if they still dont take you as male after that, theyre probably a little dim.  i dont think youd run into any problems if you correct them before they try to charge you.  if you wait until the price comes up, theyre calling you she or ma'am, then you raise a fuss, they may think youre just trying to get a better price for shiggles.

Put on a fake beard! :D
I'd want to see the person who thinks you are a female :D

Then again.. there was the tv show "young blades" where a woman put on a fake beard and I didn't understand what's going on there as I started watching from the middle (and first time ever) :D

I wish I could pass as well as she did as a female when trying to pass a guy :D
