Title: What do you believe should happen in the world for transgender rights?
Post by: schoolWORK on September 25, 2006, 03:30:12 PM
I am doing a debate for Pro-Transgender equality rights.  I want to know what people who have to deal with this on a day to day basis think about what your rights should be.  Thanks for your help!

All we want is what everyone else wants.  We only want the same rights as everyone else.  Currently it is legal to discriminate against us.  Yes, an employer can fire us without cause in many states.  We can be denied insurance benefits. We can be denied the right to see our loved ones in the hospital.  The list goes on and on.

I highly suggest you check out http://www.transgenderlaw.org/, which is the Transgender Law and Policy Institute.  It has a very nice break down of the legal issues that transgender people face and ways to overcome some of the discriminatory policies and laws.

Most transgender people really want at the very least is the legal rights that really should be basic human rights.

Yes I am IS and as such a part of the TG community but I have a pulse and feelings so I am human and as such should have equality as all other humans out there. After all, I am normal.

Thanks so much for your alls responses.  I really want to help define atleast one person's view in the class to see everyone as equal no matter what their "deal" is.  I am going to a churchy college so any step in the right direction would be great and all of what you all have said already has helped me out a lot!  Thanks SO much

Beyond just having civil rights, I hope for a world in which it is truly safe to express one's gender, wherever it is on the continuum.

I agree basically with what's already been said.  I don't want any special rights or priviledges, just the same rights as everyone else.  It doesn't seem like that should be so much to ask.

Equality in all aspects of life, goods , services, medical provision.

There is discrimination in these areas as much asanywhere else.

To me, the fight for marriage equality is extremely important to the transgender community. The right of a transgendered person to marry the person they love shouldn't depend on surgical status or change of gender on birth certificate. Another essential issue is insurance. If health insurance companies were required to pay for gender reassignment surgery, it would immeasurably benefit the transgendered community.

Finally, I believe the most important issue is public awareness. If more people were aware of the existence of transsexuals (beyond the obvious stereotypes perpetuated by the media), more people would accept us, and fewer people would fear our existence. The gay and lesbian community has done a good job of making people aware of their existence--with parades, marches, and coming out days--but the transgendered community isn't as visible and thus isn't as accepted. Not being shunned isn't a privilege--it's a right.

Basic human rights would be nice and a nice change.

Word is getting out and things are changing, but very slowly.  One day I hope to not have to fight over a name change, not have to worry about a doctor abusing me or walking off, and be able to interact with law enforcement once again without worries of being jailed or beaten for just asking a question.

Yes, we just want the same basic human rights we had before we came out.  I know many people keep it closeted because they fear the social stigma and loss of basic rights that come along with being transgendered and are forced to live a life of agony.  If people didn't fear being thought of as a "freak"--chich has been perpetuated by shows like Jerry Springer--then they would be able to live life without fear of just being themselves.  It's unfair to be forced to live a life of fear and exile just because we were born with a birth defect.  The world is slowly changing and becoming more accepting, but that will only continue to happen as long as we keep pushing.
