while the regulations vary by country to country, both a psychologist and psychiatrist can diagnosis and treat clients, while the latter can also prescribe meds per their license and training.

Even if your local psychologist or psychiatrist doesn't specialize in gender issues they should be able to refer you to someone who does so I would just go to which ever one can see you first and ask them. Hope that helps.

Try calling one of them and asking if there are any people that are specialized in gender therapy in your area.  I'm sure they'd be glad to help you out and might know some references.

A psychiatrist maybe ? In Japan, that's the kind of doctor who consults about gender issues befre delivering the GID diagnostic certificate to unlock the SRS.

I've been working with a psychologist.  She doesn't specialize in gender issues, but many of my issues weren't gender issues. ::)  She can write the letter for SRS, but I have a lot of work to do on myself before that becomes an issue.  I'm seeing her because I need her help to get from here to there.

Don't worry about the letter yet.  Work with someone to help you now.  You can always switch therapists later if need be.

I have a counsellor. Maybe that is all you need too, not so much someone to 'diagnose' you but someone to help you work things out for yourself.

The distinction doesn't matter. Just find someone you feel comfortable with.

I don't think it really matters you can always change. I went a psycologist, because I could go for free, he helped me have have confidence about talking about my gender problems (with my family, doctor and endo). He had never seen anyone with gender issues before, but he was still good. Anyway Just go and if you don't like the one your seeing just go to someone else.
