Title: Haircuts and spiky hair
Post by: Matthew J. F on September 23, 2009, 12:19:04 AM
I'm wanting to get my hair cut soon. I'm having a hard time trying to decide if I should cut it myself or to hire someone to cut it for me.

Right now my hair is long and looks very femine. I'm waiting until the back of my head hair (I shave the back so the air can cool off my scalp) grows about a few inches before I get my haircut done.  I'm very excited about finally getting something done that I want and that I will enjoy. I guess this is the first step to TG I suppose :D I hope by next Monday the back hairs will be at the appropriate length to have my hair cut so it will give me time to make some hard decisions.

This is the style that I'm going for.

I've always been fascinated with these type of hair styles and so I'm giving myself a treat by getting my hair done this way :D

I wanted to go with this style
(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi893.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fac139%2FLinuxWolf%2FHaircuts%2F1.jpg&hash=32d433f4fe4f67d4039babb0c0aa45fb6eff94ae)
but I thought the hair was too long in length for my taste.

I did had spiky hair at the time... 1st time by a professional (looked good) but then my hair grew back and thought I could cut my own hair (to save some money) and ended up doing a bad job and looked like I got electrocuted!

This is my current photo that was taken on Monday. Sorry for the bad editing but I didn't like the background.

Do you think my facial structure can sustain this kind of style?

Does anyone here do their own hair? How many of you guys manage to successfully give your own hair cut?

when I look at the second picture of haircuts that you posted I noticed something. Do you see the hair sticking out near the back behind his ear. I would be wary of getting anything like that. It seems much more masculine appearing to have the bottom squared off and short.

That would be my advice. I have always had this type of style and would suggest going to a barber a the first few times. Watch what he does and how he shapes the hair. After a few haircuts I was able to cut it myself. Cutting it myself saves a lot of money and I can customize the cut exactly how I want it.

Sometimes its easier when using clippers to cut your hair a little shorter than preferred and have it grow in the first week. My hair grows fast and the cut I like is just easier to cut short and blend without the use of scissors. Thats the hardest part, if you need to use scissors on yourself.

Have fun, trying out hairstyles has been some of my favorite parts of the journey so far.

I like the top one. I think I might try it out, I've been wanting to try a shorter, spikier hairstyle.

Hey Nick :) I think I'm going take your suggestion and go to the barbers a few times. I'm just so excited about this haircut I don't want to mess it up by doing something terribly wrong.

It's going to feel funny walking into a mens barbershop asking for for the first photo cut.

Yeah I honestly think from your picture you'll look like a lesbian, but it's hard to see your face. It'd be easier to discern your facial structure if you took the glasses off. Are you wearing lipstick?

Anyway, I cut my own hair now. But my hair's hard to screw up, it's wavy. Since your hair's straight I'd recommend a barber.

And let us know how it goes.

If you like the cut then go for it.  Just be aware that short spiky hair is so common in the lesbian community that you're more likely to be read as butch than as male.  At least, that's been my experience.  If I comb my hair down, or at least let it go natural I occasionally pass.  When I spike it I never do.  :(  I can hardly wait until I look definitively male so I can start doing more interesting things with my hair again.

Of course, sometimes I just feel like spiking my hair, and even wearing eye liner, and I'll think, "F*** it.  Let them think what they like."  :icon_ciggy:

I cut my own hair but I like mine shoulder length, so it's a different matter.

I agree with Jamie-o, although the hairstyle itself is rather fetching. :)

SilverFang Thanks for your honesty, I appreciate it :) No I'm not wearing lipstick, that stuffs is for chicks! I wouldn't wear that stuffs if I was heavily intoxicated or stoned off of my ass.

At this time of my life  I don't care if people think I'm a lesbian or if I look butch because I know that I'm not. I need to walk that other step and start doing things that I want and that I know that I will get pleasure out of it. I'm tired of being a peoples pleaser because it only brings me misery in my life. Time to be more assertive.

The last time I had my hair spiked people actually start viewing me as a guy. At the time I was in a womens support group (to figure out what was going on with me, before knowing that deep inside I was suppose to be a guy and not as woman) and 1 of the woman at the group showed concerns about me being at the womens support group because of what she thought I was, which I took a great compliment but then the facilitator corrected her by saying that I was a woman!!!

I like spiky hair and I do indeed have spiky hair also. I've had it for quite a while. Although I do get thought of as a gay man instead of a straight man. However before T when I had spiky hair I sort of get passed as a butch dyke. Which isn't a good look.

In that case, go for it.  It's an awesome style, IMO, and I think it will look really good on you.  ;D
