Title: Mermaids.... Weird or not......
Post by: justme19 on September 29, 2009, 12:26:13 AM
Hey ^^

So about 5min ago i was trying to think of the first memoires of Gender issues.

Not sure if this counts or not but.... when i 3 or 4 i can rember wishing that i was a mermaid. And then after about 6 months of that, i rember that wishing that i was female.

The only thing that comes to my mind when i think about wishing that i was a mermaid is, that mermaids don't really have a gender, maybe i was just so unhappy about being male that i did not care at that point if i had any grender at all. TBH i would still prefer to have "NO" gender then being male.

Anybody have any other explnations to this?

Thanks

Mermaids r wonderful & beautiful, but if I cannot be female, than my 2'nd choice is a Buffalo when they could still get their wild on B4 we could shoot em' up.

I've heard that the mermaid thing is common with trans kids.

Mermaids are mer  maids , not mermen and therefore female bodied.

On the side,  a shrink asked what I would be if I could be anything I wanted. I wished to be a molecule of air. Shrink said I couldn't choose that so I said molecule of water. He then said I had to pick an animal so I said elephant since it obviously didn't matter as long as it was something he wanted me to say. I lost all respect for shrinks at that point.

Of course mermaids has gender!

I know many girls who would love to be like Ariel, and I many pretty much any girl.

From what ive read its very true!! There seems to be a very strong link between mermaids and trans kids.
Anybody else had or herd of this from experience?

There is a very strong link between any normal and pretty much non-normal girls and mermaids too!

I heard it on barbara walters. supposedly it's because they have no genitals. maybe little transgirls feel closer to them cause they don't have vaginas either.

I doubt that this is as common as people think that it is. I think this is just a myth that started from the segment featuring Jazz on the 20/20 episode "My Secret Self". I'm sure that there are SOME young transgirls that are into that stuff (just as there are some that are more 'tomboyish'), but to assume that all of them are one way or another seems a little bit silly to me.

There is a whole TG Kids site that does relate the Mermaids to TG : http://www.mermaids.freeuk.com/ (http://www.mermaids.freeuk.com/)
http://www.mermaidsuk.org.uk/gidca.html (http://www.mermaidsuk.org.uk/gidca.html)

And it has been around a whole lot longer.

As a child I was intrigued by mermaids and I remember finding it interesting there were no "parts" but I could not relate as many children seem to do today. As I got older, I did develop an obsession for butterflies and now my apartment is filled with butterflies. (Fake, not real.) :)

I loved Mermaids and sea horses as a kid. But like Dora, I much prefer butterflies now. I absolutely love butterflies. They are just so symbolic of my transition.

Even my necklace in my avatar is a butterfly.

It wasn't a myth as far as my experience- I longed to be a mermaid as a child, talked about it, wrote about it, drew pictures of mermaids, played mermaid in the summer camp pool... I was made fun of and even punished because of it. Despite Barbara Walters, I think it is something that little t-girls often dream about.

I still draw pictures of them... from last May:

Aiel's a ->-bleeped-<-. Didn't you know that? Okay, first of all, "Ariel" is a boy's name -- see The Tempest. Second, go back and listen to "Part Of Your World." Definitely a ->-bleeped-<-.

I've had a Mermaid thing since childhood. one of the reasons I took up diving was the hope of seeing one. Even when I gave up on there being a Santa Claus, I still was sure that Mermaids must exist and I was gonna find one  :icon_yes:

I always thought that about Ariel...

QuoteWhat would I give, if I could live, outa these waters?
What would I pay, to spend a day warm on the sand?
Betya on land, they understand, bet they don't reprimand their daughters,
Bright young women, sick of swimmin', ready to stand.

Up where they walk, up where they run, up where they stay all day in the sun,
Wanderin' free, wish I could be, part of that world.

My first dream I ever had where I was a girl was of me as a mermaid. Other mermaids were helping me by keeping the mermen away and not taking me back. That's where it really started to sink in for me.

I never really had a fascination with mermaids or anything other than that dream (of course, I do love Little Mermaid, lol).

Oo! What a coincidence
When I was a little tot, I remember getting for xmas (and BEGGINGGG the heck out of my mom) two mermaid barbies, or something to that effect.  IT was the best present ever, and I just loved it.
Little did I realize it had a deep-seated effect on me years to come.

For years a asked for a Mermaid costume for Halloween. My folks would say "We'll see dear".  :P

I would then be given Spider Man, Neptune, Achilles or the Devil or other costumes  :P
