Title: Establishing a workplace LGBT Committee?
Post by: mmelny on October 05, 2009, 07:07:35 PM
Has anyone ever been a part of an intra-company LGBT committee, either joining one, being assisted by one, or helping to form one?  I work for a sizable company, and my coming out process was a tale of isolation, and (quiet) reaction by executive management and HR staff, however supportive the environment did turn out to be.   I mostly think that I was lucky.  In my company, people don't just 'come out', lol.  It shouldn't be that way, there should be clear and concise company policies on such issues, and frankly, for my company anyway, there is not.

I'm now well known in our company, a fairly conservative environment, where I think that many feel uncomfortable or dis-inhibited from emerging from their cocoons.   I hope that I served as an example of 'success', but as I move back into a routine daily working life, I wonder if there isn't more that I could do, IE working towards a program that makes LGBT issues more noticeably in the workplace, or accessible to those contemplating such changes in their own lives, and putting processes put in place for those wishing to come out.  I'm a part of management, and have the connections to be heard by executive management, in such a request, but not even sure what I'm asking for, as I have just began to explore these possibilities.

Any advice or resources, or examples of workplace education and activism that doesn't rock the boat too much, but creates an environment where workers aren't afraid to be who they are?

Hi, and yes there definitely are organizations out there to help.

I belong to an excellent organization here in the states called Out & Equal. It is a workplace support organization that works with some of the largest employers in the US. It's members are LGBT and work with their own company's  management to form company policies and employee resource groups. (ERG's)

In addition to Out & Equal, you could look up HRC (human rights campaign). They have a boat load of experience with working with American and international employers. They also have hand outs for family members, employers and others. They are a good resource.

I would suggest you look into them! Good luck and congratulations!
