Title: Online Hate
Post by: scarboroughfair on October 07, 2009, 09:07:47 PM
Just last weekend I was called some choice names on a community. I don't yet know how to deal with that!

How do the other girls here cope with this sorta thing?

I didn't blow up which is a plus, but still think I could of handled it better.

I will be writing a blog post this weekend about it.

Not so long ago I would have totally blown up on anyone who gave me any stuff  :icon_raving:

But thanks to my therapist, PSR worker and various friends here I've been learning to deal with stuff allot better in an intelligent manor  :icon_chick:

I try to be careful not to "feed the trolls" becuase that's what they want is to stir things up & responding to them just encourages them. As far as fighting w/a other ts/tg I think we've got it hard enough as it is to turn on one another. If you offend someone, say you're sorry. If someone offends you, try not to let it get to you.

Is it wrong to hate haters? If so, then I guess I'm wrong  :-\

No, we shouldn't turn against each other. Have you seen all the hate groups that are online?

Do people in Hate groups hate each other? Or do they respect fellow haters? I've never visted such sites and have no desire to.
Hate seems to be such a useless emotion. And people seem to need to feed it constantly.

ok this may be a little bold but i have no problem taking the battle to them so to speak i was in the military so to ignore open hostilities is not in me espeacially if they bring it to my home turf in our example the forum or a personal web site of mine

For a while the online thing was pretty cool but it was always fraught with haters and judgers.  I have found that since making good progress with my real life that I no longer go to the Internet to get what I need.  I recommend focusing on real life and then the Internet stuff will fade into the distance a little and loose it's importance which it should never have anyway.  I didn't transition to have a virtual life, I transitioned to have a real life.  Focus on things that are not on a computer screen and you will be far happier :) or that is my advice anyway.

From my own experiences of Transgendered forums sometimes they can be the most malicious type of forum.  I had a lot of abuse in the past on other Transgendered forums. If you are honest about yourself people can react to that and sometimes you can expose their real personality which can make them react aggessively.

Susan's is still one of the best forums in this field and allows more freedom of communication than others and you don't get hostile threats from moderators which I've experienced on other TG forums.

Whenever I get called names (which I do, frequently, even if they rarely have anything to do with me being trans) I sigh, and respond in the calmest, most rational manner I am capable of. I refuse to allow namecalling to get under my skin and occasionally I let slide a simple little snide comment implying that the namecaller does so simply from a position of insecurity and immaturity, and state that namecalling and insults are not an appropriate substitute for logic and reason in a debate.

I'm with Miniar, you're likely to avoid the name calling if you're rational in your response. People tend to listen to you better too. I've noticed some people go out aggressive while trying to educate someone and it just gets a knee jerk response.

Most online hate can be avoided simply by staying out of certain areas or not giving them attention.
