Watch President Obama's address at the Human Rights Campaign's banquet in Washington, D.C., Oct. 10.
President Obama pledged to end the ban on homosexuals serving openly in the military, but acknowledged to a cheering crowd that the policy changes he promised on the campaign trail are not coming as quickly as they expected.
I hope he can swing it! He'll have earned that Nobel prize in my eyes if he can.
All this focus on ending DADT is wonderful but that issue applies only to a small minority of LGBT people, the ones in the military. It's all over the news, as is the Obama speech, but what is noticeably missing is talk about DOMA and ENDA. They each affect far more LGBTs than DADT.
In his speech, Obama talked about incrementalism. I guess this was what he was talking about. End DADT then let the opposition settle down. Then focus on passing ENDA. And finish off with ending DOMA. Attack the problems by addressing the least resistant issues first.
Right now we have a Democratic House, Senate and President. If we can't get these equality issues passed now, we never will.
