I've been looking all over for a good messenger bag for my sketchbook and markers that seems masculine and simple. I keep ending up looking at skate boarder bags. Any tips / links?
My solution is that I'm bloody well gonna make my own!
I like timbuk 2 bags. They make various messenger bags but they are not cheap. At one point you could go online and make your own, not sure if that is still the case.

The site is neat, too bad you can't use your own custom art.

That's always an idea, but not practical for me. I need something sturdy to support the weight of my markers and sketchbooks.
Have you looked at Laptop cases? It's not exactly the same but they can carry a bit more weight more easily then most messenger bags I've seen. I have no idea how big your sketchbook is but most sizes should fit, they can get pretty big for those 24 inch monster screens, unless it's one of those giant landscape notebooks... then you need a van or a pick-up ;)

Maybe you could share your secret with me. :)
Nah, it's cool. I don't know if I want to spend 80+ on a bag. It is bugging me though. There is this one bag at pacsun that I had my eye on that was only 45. You should definitely post some pictures of your bag when it is done. I'd like to see how it turns out.
ofc... haven't gotten around to making it just yet, but when I do, I'll take excessive photos.

Flan,
Thanks for the link. Nifty bag, but not big enough for me. I've spotted that bag a few times here and there.
Take a feminine messenger bag, then paste a sign that says I AM A MAN onto it.

I was looking around my house and found an old laptop messenger bag. It's very basic. I think I paid $15 dollars for it 5 years ago. It fits my largest travel sketchbook 9"x12", marker bag, pens, pencil case and another sketch book pretty good. I has a nylonish exterior which makes it pretty good against rain and it is black. I'm thinking this will do the job for the next year or two.
I did spend quite a while on timbuk2's website... but couldn't justify spending that much on a bag... and besides I'm saving up for a binder.
Thanks everyone for all your help and tips.

tips and links? ebay. I have tons of messenger bags. I put my laptop in my brown one that I got off ebay.
I also went to a local 'Mighty Dollar' where everything's a dollar, and I got a messenger bag there. It was quite masculine. You may be able to find one in the backpacks and purses aisle in wal-mart or any other store ya got around where u live. If it was allowed, I'd send you one. But the rules say not to give out personal info so... I'll look on ebay and try to get you a link or something.
