Talk about a hypersensitive economic environment! I got a letter from my mortgage company the other day and it said I was in default for not paying the last two mortgage payments. I haven't even been late on a mortgage payment since I got divorced.
I'm freaking out thinking they didn't get my payments and that someone else has the money. :icon_nervious:
So I called them and got put through the usual automated nightmare. Along the way it said the balance owed was $0 and the next payment was due in November. :eusa_think:
Things must be pretty touch and go at the mortgage companies! Has anyone had this happen to them?
Julie
Could be a snafu, or it could have been scam.
I know there are people calling saying you are behind in an effort to get you to pay right then on the phone.
Haven't had anything with a mortgage but on three occasions I was trying to be intimidated to pay a bill that I couldn't pay at the particular time asked. When these people started being unprofessional I reported two of them to their higer ups. The other I told him to get lost.

I agree, this is the hottest scam going. Please if anyone else gets an email or call like this w/o good reason, it's likely a scam. This is what the worst of humans do, take advantage of others when times are tough.
Yup, there are a butt load of scams going on right now. Phishing for mortgages, credit cards, bank accounts. You name it, someone is after it.
Best off to do what you did Julie and go directly to the mortgage co., bank etc. that you deal with.

Always contact them yourself, never deal with anyone who calls.
Sorry Julie,
I hope it works out. I was hounded for a debt of $0 and they even threatened court action. In the end I had to give them a cheque for $0. I gave it to them personally and photographed handing the cashier the cheque.
On the other hand, I presume from what others have said that the $100 million I won on the lottery is not real? Damn I was about to send my bank details.
Hope it works out

That happened just last month, They called and said they didn't receive our mortgage payment for the month 10 days after it was due! (We always send payment in at least 10 days before its due) I called the next day and automated system said we owed 0 ! Later that evening we got another call asking where our payment was !
I explained to the Mortgage company the automated system said we owed 0, yet she insisted we didn't pay !
Next morning went to the bank and found out the check was cashed 3 days before the due date ! got a copy and faxed it to them, later I got a call stating how sorry they were, and of course it was a COMPUTER error, the automated system was correct, but the computer also sent to the accounting department a past due notice. They blamed the COMPUTER error on merge from Countrywide to Bank of America !
Now I signed up for automatic E-mail notice when they post the payment.

It is a big mistake to depend on computers alone. They have no common sense.
:D
(Nor do many of their programmers, unfortunately.)

I once had to send a check for $0.07 and told them that the cost of pursuing the $0.07 was probably 1000 times more than what is owed. The person I was talking to didn't get it. :P
