Title: Microwave cooking
Post by: Cindy on November 02, 2009, 02:38:20 AM
Hi chefs and chieftainesses ()
The post about instant popcorn got me thinking. How many people actually cook meals by microwave? Now hold on, not instant bought meals and popcorn doesn't count. I mean proper nutritious, healthy meals.

I certainly part cook some things such as potatoes, or nuke the vegies as part of a meal. But I'm after a whole meal .

And of course recipies.

In the spirit of Master Chef the best recipies go on to the next round :-X

Cooking is an art. The reasons there are many tools is to give different results. Microwave cooks by friction of water molecules. Some foods need crispy out side and raw inside not possible with even friction.

Nope, the only things I nuke are sandwiches and popcorn.

Hamburger helper, from start to finish.  But one does need to have special microwave pots and pans.
Bacon and eggs.
Burritos, completely.
I have also made a cheese cake in the microwave.

There are a lot of cookbooks dedicated to microwave cooking. And even several websites.  This is just one...http://allrecipes.com/recipes/everyday-cooking/campus-cooking/microwave/main.aspx (http://allrecipes.com/recipes/everyday-cooking/campus-cooking/microwave/main.aspx)

I've made some meals in the nukuwave, most notable slalom with rice
(I mostly try to keep food that tends to dry and taste bad moist by putting it in a partially sealed microwave safe plastic container and adding water so that it cooks with a steam effect)

Aside from popcorn & reheating, the only truely satisfying results I've gotten is from that can of hairspray.

I love it for baked potatoes and sweet potatoes.  I use it for some fresh, and most frozen veggies, but only on sensor cook.  That and reheat leftovers and cook popcorn.
Otherwise, I love to cook, and the wave box just is not what works for me.  Oven and stove top most of the time.

Just something to think about. I did an experiment growing beans, same containers, same soil, same sunlight. one container was watered with water that had been microwaved and one from the tap. The microwave water beans grew frail and distorted, the others thrived.
No other conclusion

Did the nuclear watered plants glow in the dark? I once worked in a place where the microwave kept going even after the door was opened, scary!
