What is your name?
What is your quest?
What is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?

Heh heh, sorry...  :P

What is your name?
Dante. I'm leaving out my last name, though I chose that too. I have no middle name.

What does your name mean?
I'm not big on name meanings, that didn't factor into it.

That said, it's the shortened form of Durante (Which is derived from the latin name Durans meaning enduring).

My last name is along the lines of scribe, record keeper, writer (in so far as "meaning", though it's more derived from a job title).

Where is it derived from?
An author and a few fictional characters that I can very much relate to.
Background wise, first name is Italian derived from Latin. Last name is English, derived from old French.

How did you choose it?
Hmm... it was a very long time ago. I'm not really sure, it just kinda clicked when I heard it.  I considered some others derived from my birth name, but I kept coming back to what I have now.

Is it masculine, feminine, or unisex?
Masculine

What influenced your decision, if any?
10 years after I heard it, it still clicked.

Is it a common name where you're from?
No.

Everybody knows of it, but nobody actually knows anyone who has it (well, that isn't dead or fictional ).

It's uncommon enough that I get the perks of having a unique name, with being "normal" enough people can spell and pronounce it (and not ask too many questions).

Name origin info derived from here: http://www.behindthename.com/ (http://www.behindthename.com/)

LINUS

Gender: Masculine

Usage: Greek Mythology (Latinized), German, Scandinavian

Pronounced: LIE-nəs (English), LEE-nuws (German)  [key]
From the Greek name Λινος (Linos) meaning "flax". In Greek legend he was the son of the god Apollo, who accidentally killed him in a contest. Another son of Apollo by this name was the music teacher of Herakles. The name was also borne by the second pope, serving after Saint Peter in the 1st century. In modern times it was the name of a character in Charles Schulz's comic strip 'Peanuts'.

My aunt started calling me Linus when I was 8 yrs old in reference to the Peanuts' character habit of responding to questions from adults with adult answer (much like I did).

Masculine and I choose it because of what she did. Not as common as one would think and many think it's because of Linus Torvalds.

What is your name? Christian, shortened to Chris for everyday use.

What does your name mean? I've been told its a religious thing or somethin'  ;) but that's not why I chose it.

Where is it derived from? It is of Greek origin, and its meaning is "follower of Christ".

How did you choose it? It's the male variation of my birth name...I did this in part for family's sake, to ease transition and make it easier to explain to people when a family member slipped up (mask it as a mispronounce). I wanted Chris as my name, but Christopher is too popular for my taste.

Is it masculine, feminine, or unisex? Technically it and my birth name are both unisex. Though in current times in the US my birth name is almost 100% female and Christian is almost 100% male. (fun side note, my birth name is actually male in some places in europe)

What influenced your decision, if any? I have an autistic cousin and an aunt that's also slow mentally and neither one would understand a name/gender change. And my family sadly couldn't be trusted to call me by whatever I chose, they would just ignore my wishes for their own means. But really, the name's grown a lot on me...and this way it didn't take any time at all getting used to answering to.

Is it a common name where you're from? Yes and no...Chris is, but Christian is much less so versus Christopher. That said...it's REALLY up there on the popular name list.

What is your name?  Jamison Hadley S_____

What does your name mean?  1st: Son of James (Yeah, I know.  Not very Exciting  ;) )  2nd: Heather Meadow

Where is it derived from? Britain

How did you choose it?  Looked through baby name books.

Is it masculine, feminine, or unisex?  Masculine

What influenced your decision, if any?  I wanted to keep my initials.  Jamison was the J name I liked the best.  Hadley was a nod to the reason my mom chose Heather as my original 2nd name.

Is it a common name where you're from?  No.  And I'm finding people think it's "too difficult."  ::)
Title: Re: Your Name(choosing a name)
Post by: Miniar on November 05, 2009, 07:53:39 AM
What is your name?
Hans Miniar Jónsson

What does your name mean?
Well, Hans, according to etymology comes from Johannes, which comes from John, which comes from Yochanan which means "YHVH is Gracious" (YHVH being the judeo-christian god).
Miniar exists only in one place in modern languages and that is in Spanish, where it's a transitive verb that means "To paint in miniature." However, it also exists in ancient Tibetan where it translates to "he who is hidden/forgotten".
Jónsson just means Son of Jón (which is John, again, in Icelandic).

Where is it derived from?
Er, I answered that above...

How did you choose it?
Hans -> because I'm originally named after my father's  mother I decided that the logical thing to do was to take my mother's father's name instead. I am an old fashioned guy and want to honor my family, and Hans is a nice name that is sadly dying out.
Miniar -> came to me in a dream actually and once I learned it's meaning in the ancient Tibetan language I just "knew" it was "me".
Jónsson -> well, Icelandic tradition is, a child takes his father's first name and is named his son or daughter. I'm currently Jónsdóttir (daughter of John) and since I still care deeply 'bout my father and he's trying his best to comprehend this thing even if he's a bit of an ass about it sometimes, I'll keep his name and become Jónsson (son of John) instead.

Is it masculine, feminine, or unisex?
Hans = Masculine
Miniar = "technically" masculine, but I suppose it's phonetics are rather unisex
Jónsson = Masculine

What influenced your decision, if any?
My own sense of honor mostly.

Is it a common name where you're from?
No it's not.
Hans is "dying out" around here, there's only 165 results with that name when I run it through the phonebook online and some of those are companies and I've not once seen a man under the age of 30 named Hans unless it was a middle name that he never used.
Miniar is nonexistent as a "name", and I'll have to apply for permission with the "naming committee" in Iceland to be allowed to take it.
Jónsson however, is Really common. Run that trough the phonebook online and it goes "999+" results. Might have something to do with the fact that Jón is the most common name on this island. ;)

What is your name?
James Avery W______

What does your name mean?
JAMES
Gender: Masculine
Usage: English, Biblical

Pronounced: JAYMZ (English)
English form of the Late Latin name Iacomus which was derived from Ιακωβος (Iakobos), the New Testament Greek form of the Hebrew name Ya'aqov (see JACOB). This was the name of two apostles in the New Testament. The first was Saint James the Greater, the apostle John's brother, who was beheaded under Herod Agrippa in the Book of Acts. The second was James the Lesser, son of Alphaeus. Another James (known as James the Just) is also mentioned in the Bible as being the brother of Jesus.

Since the 13th century this form of the name has been used in England, though it became more common in Scotland, where it was borne by several kings. In the 17th century the Scottish king James VI inherited the English throne, becoming the first ruler of all Britain, and the name grew much more popular. Famous bearers include the explorer Captain James Cook (1728-1779), the inventor of the steam engine James Watt (1736-1819), and the novelist and poet James Joyce (1882-1941). This name has also been borne by six American presidents. A notable fictional bearer is the British spy James Bond, created by author Ian Fleming.

AVERY
Gender: Masculine & Feminine
Usage: English
Pronounced: AY-vər-ee, AYV-ree
From a surname which was itself derived from the Norman French form of the given names ALBERICH or ALFRED.

Where is it derived from?
Etymologically, see above. Personally, my mom picked it.

How did you choose it?
When I came out to my mom, she said "Does that mean you're not going to keep the name I gave you?" I replied with "Well, yeah, but do you want to pick my new one?" She suggested James, I mulled it over for a few days (along with Braedon, a name I'd always liked, and Stephen, which my brother had suggested), and eventually felt that James was just "me". Plus, I really like that my mom chose it, cuz it's more like what would've happened if I'd been born a guy in the first place. :)

Is it masculine, feminine, or unisex?
James is masculine, Avery is unisex.

What influenced your decision, if any?
As mentioned, my mom suggested it, but I did always like the name as well. Plus, once I started "trying it on for size" it just was impossible to think of myself as any other name.

Is it a common name where you're from?
Yup, pretty common.

1 - Jace Hunter
2 - Jace =  "Healer", Hunter = "One who Hunts".  I just looked those up haha, I didn't know what they meant and that's not why I chose them
3 - Greek/English
4 - I chose Jace because it shares the same first initial as my female name and I liked it.  Hunter was going to be my middle name if I had been born a boy, and it's taken from my grandmother on my dad's side of the family
5 - Masculine, although Hunter can be either
6 - Was originally going to go by Trent but my mom wasn't cool with that name so I picked Jace because we both liked it.  Hunter, as I said before, was to honor/appreciate my family.  So I guess in both instances my family had somewhat of an influence
7 - It's not too common but I know a couple other people with the same name

What is your name? Aaron Chris (chris is middle name)
What does your name mean? Aaron means "high mountain" or "exalted". Chris is short for Christopher, which means "bearing Christ".
Where is it derived from? Aaron is Hebrew, Christopher is English.
How did you choose it? Aaron is the name my parents considered giving me had I been XY. Chris is a shortened version of my given name.
Is it masculine, feminine, or unisex? Aaron is masculine, though pronounced the same way as unisex Erin. Chris is unisex.
Is it a common name where you're from? Aaron is the 2nd most popular masculine baby name for my birth year.

Interesting.  Had I been declared a boy at birth my parents were going to name me Aaron Christopher.

Well, that's one story I've gotten.  The other is that they hadn't decided on a boy's name, and that the only name they agreed on, Sean, when paired with my last name made the speaker sound drunk.  :D

Actually I was going to be named Aaron Scott, but given that my last name starts with an S, it doesn't make the best initials. (What's awesome is that my great grandma was the one to point that out) By the time of my birth, the male name would have been Zachary, but they reused that for my brother.

What is your name?   PrairieWolf

What does your name mean?  It's another term for Coyote =D

Where is it derived from?  It's actually the english translation of the Lakota Miyaca

How did you choose it?  I have Native American in my background so chose it to honour that.

Is it masculine, feminine, or unisex?  Well the name itself is masculine, but at the time I chose it I didn't know the word 'Prairie' was french for flower  :-\

What influenced your decision, if any?  My love of Native American culture and especially the Lakota as well as my love for wild canids.

Is it a common name where you're from?  Nope...not common anywhere I've been.

What is your name?
Victor James *******

What does your name mean?
VICTOR - VIKTOR (Cyrillic: Виктор):
Scandinavian form of Roman Latin Victor, meaning "conqueror."
Slavic form of Roman Latin Victor, meaning "conqueror." In use by the Bulgarians, Russians and Serbians.
JAMES: Middle English and Old French vernacular form of Late Latin Jacomus, from Greek Iakobos, meaning "supplanter." In the New Testament bible, this is the name of several characters, including two apostles and a half-brother of Jesus.

Where is it derived from?
See above!  :)

How did you choose it?
I've chosen Victor because I just liked it... And I don't have anyone in my family or among friends whose name is Victor. It also means "winner" and I hope that one day I will transition and win this battle! :)
James Hetfield is my favourite musician, and I always liked the name James.

Is it masculine, feminine, or unisex?
Masculine

What influenced your decision, if any?
I just like that names...
I also like the name Dimitrije.
DIMITRIJE (Димитрије): Serbian form of Latin Demetrius, meaning "loves the earth" or "follower of Demeter."
I'm born on Saint Demetrius day and Saint Demetrius is patron of soldiers. I aways wanted to be a soldier, so I just like all that. Also, most of the names in my family starts with letter "D".  ;)

Is it a common name where you're from?
Well, no...
People in Serbia usually do not have middle name, but I always wanted to be different...  ;D

Ruadhan (http://www.behindthename.com/name/ruadha10n) (meaning, origin, gender -- all right there)

I initially chose the Anglicised version ("Rowan", which can be unisex, depending on your part of the Anglosphere) at the local TS/TG group cos it was the first thing that came into my head.  I later researched it and discovered the Gaelic form; in the original Gaelic, it's also the name of one of the twelve apostles of Ireland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruadhan), and then remembered that my father's father had a brother named Ruadhan, who died of scarlet fever as a young child before emigrating from Ulster.  "Ruadhan" is also the name of a figure in Gaelic mythology, son of Brighd, of the Tuatha de Dannan, and Her husband Bres, of the Fomori, and Ruadhan's death might be easily compared to that of the Orphic Dionysos, but the comparisons seem to begin and end there.

It's not very common in the United States at all, especially not around here; howmanyofme.com, in a first name search, states only around 1,500 Amerikans (less than even 0.5%) are named "Ruadhan" (based on U$ census data); a Facebook search shows that it's far more common in Ireland and even the UK, but even then, "Rowan" is at least tenfold more popular in both countries.

I'm born on Saint Demetrius day..
I was almost named Blaise because I was born on his Saint day. Even though Blaise is masculine around the world, since it's pronounced Blaze it would be quite feminine sounding in the U.S. So, I lucked out in getting a more unisex first name.

1) Harry Lewis P_______
2) Harry means home protector and Lewis means famous warrior.
3) Harry is English. Lewis is the anglicized version of the French Louis, but I'm not sure whether the French or English came first.
4) Well Harry is the masculine form of my birth name and I wanted to keep it simple for my friends and family.  Lewis sounds a little like my old middle name (Elizabeth) and also I really like Inspector Morse so I thought of the character Lewis from that! How geeky!
5) They are both masculine names in Britain, although some girls with my birth name use Harry as a nickname, which is annoying.
6) As I said, mainly a sense of making it easier for friends and family to remember.  Although I'm not sure whether I will keep it cos my mum said she actually would prefer it if I used a completely different name, and I really like the name Brett (after Jeremy Brett who played Sherlock Holmes, complete legend!) Also I hate my surname so I might just use Lewis as my surname.  Brett Lewis  :)
7) Harry is quite common and Lewis is too, although they're not the most popular names in Britain.

What is your name? - Andrew Marten H.

What does your name mean? - Andrew: Greek, "man, warrior" Marten: Latin, "dedicated to Mars"

How did you choose it? - one day I finally decided to do something about my given-name, so I decided to search for androgynous nicknames that could be used for "Amanda" and the only thing I came across was "Andy." So I started going by Andy. Now all the people I care about call me Andy (except my family... *ugh*) so when I legally change my name I'm going to stick with Andrew. I chose Marten for the middle name because I wanted to keep my initials the same (as a sort-of peace-offering to my folks, who aren't thrilled about all this).

Is it masculine, feminine, or unisex? - Masculine

What influenced your decision, if any? - the situational constraints. I wasn't ready to start asserting my identity, but I couldn't stand to have such an overtly feminine name anymore, and I felt the need to make it a plausible nickname that friends might give me, because I wasn't out to anyone, least of all my parents. Incidentally, my dad flipped-out about people calling me "Andy" anyway. @_@

Is it a common name where you're from? - I know so many Andrews that it almost makes me want to reconsider. Heh. But, there are no Andrews or Martens on either side of my family, so that makes it perfect.

What is your name?
G---- D------- Tripp

What does your name mean? Where is it derived from?
G---- is Old German for "warrior," D------- "son of David" (was going to be Davis, Scottish for "Son of David"), Tripp is Old English for "traveler"

How did you choose it?
I went through a boatload of baby name websites searching for names that described me (i.e. of the sky, wind, shining moon, raven, horse, warrior, etc), grouped them according to how I thought they sounded as first, middle, and last names, then picked my faves and mixed'n'matched.

Is it masculine, feminine, or unisex?
Masculine

What influenced your decision, if any?
My middle name is a tribute to my dad, to show him that I'm still his kid. It entered my thoughts much later that it's also in the name of my favorite kind of motorcycle ;)

Is it a common name where you're from?
Nope, not at all, but I have an uncle whose first name sounds similar to mine :)

What is your name?
- Evan Frederic N...

What does your name mean?
-It is of Welsh and Scottish origin, and its meaning is "God's grace; born of yew; youth". Welsh variant of Iefan (see Ieuan) from John. Scottish variant of Euan. In Celtic, the name means "young warrior". It is also used as a short form of Evangelos, which means "good messenger" in Greek. In Hebrew, Evan means "rock". Frederic's language of origin is Germanic and it is predominantly used in English. Frederic is a spelling variant of the English Frederick.

Where is it derived from?
-see above

How did you choose it?
- choosing a name has been the hardest part of all this so far.. every name that I came up with either didn't seem to fit for me, or my mother/ sister "hated" it for whatever reason. funny enough I came up with Evan one night watching MTV real world road rules challenge. lame show, but the name just clicked with me, and thankfully with my family as well. the middle name was a bit easier, both of my great grandfathers were Frederic(k)s.

Is it masculine, feminine, or unisex?
- I think of it as masculine, but I guess Evan is actually unisex.

What influenced your decision, if any?
- My family is fortunately rather supportive, so I tried to make chosing my name a family decision. Took twice as long, but everyone is happy.

Is it a common name where you're from?
- The only other Evan that I've met so far is a 5 year old boy. So I don't think so. Fredric is a family name on my fathers side of the family, but I've never met another Fredric that wasn't a Canuck snowbird down here visiting in Ft Lauderdale.

Thanks for asking this I didn't know that my name meant what it does in Hebrew, I'm going to have to get that tattooed now :). Plus its good to know I'm not the only guy who had a hard time finding a name.

What is your name? Maiuniti
*Sounds like (My-Unity)

What does your name mean? I came up with it...So I guess I could make a meaning up? I would say my name means: Unity! Haha!

Where is it derived from? My mind...

How did you choose it? With my creative mind, I toke my birth name...Micale...Twisted the letters, words, sounds and wrote down different names that began with M. I'm a huge Yu-Gi-Oh! Fan, so I used Mai, from one of my favorite charcters--Mai Valentine and added uniti, because my whole output on life is uniting myself as one whole person...Thus...Creating Maiuniti.

Is it masculine, feminine, or unisex? Absolutely feminine!

What influenced your decision, if any? (See "How did you choose it?")

Is it a common name where you're from? Not at all--And if I believe so not common anywhere, anyplace at all!

What is your name?  Benjamin
What does your name mean? Son
Where is it derived from? Hebrew
How did you choose it?  I looked at the SSA top 100 names from the year i was born, narrowed it down to a list of 10.  Then i was watching a movie, saw the name... and said "yeah, i like that"
Is it masculine, feminine, or unisex?  Masculine
What influenced your decision, if any?  I wanted to blend in, and not pick a weird name that wasn't common when i was born.  I also looked at family history
Is it a common name where you're from?  It was in the top 100 from my state the year i was born, so i'd say yes.

What is your name?
Vincent.
What does your name mean?
It means "prevailing", or "to conquer".  ;)
Where is it derived from?
Not... Entirely sure.
How did you choose it?
It was just the name I used to describe this foggy "male identity" I had at one point... Which was important in finding myself.  It also begins with the letter v... And I somehow have weaved that into my identity.
Is it masculine, feminine, or unisex?
Masculine.
What influenced your decision, if any?
Pretty much the same as above, under "how did you choose it?"
Is it a common name where you're from?
It was among the 100 most popular names of my birth year... Not too popular, not completely unheard of.

What is your name?
Sebastien Ludovic Rodriguez

What does your name mean?
1st: Venerable  2nd: Famour warrior  Last: Son of Rodrigo

Where is it derived from?
1st: French form of Sebastianus  2nd: Medieval Latinized form of Ludwig  3rd: Spanish patronymic meaning Son of Rodrigo

How did you choose it?
I asked my girl what letter suited me, she settled on S. I picked an S name that I liked. I came across Ludovic and decided it be my middle name. The pairing just rings to me.  :) The last name is my given last name. I feel wrong giving it up and it suits me well.

Is it masculine, feminine, or unisex?
All masculine.  :D

What influenced your decision, if any?
I suppose my girl because she chose the letter.  :P

Is it a common name where you're from?
It is apparently common, my first name. It was the 261 most popular name of my birth year. Ludovic, I have no clue. Rodriguez... Well, you look around at the hispanics. It's quite common.

1. Carson Lyn
2. Apparently not even the internet can tell me that.
3. Gaelic
4. I had a name that started with C before and wanted to stick with C because my sister and I had the same initials and I didn't want to screw that up. There was no masculine version of my name so I just choose one that I thought fit. And my middle name used to be Lynn but I thought that it looked too feminine but I couldn't change it because the name had sentimental meaning to my mother so I just chopped an N off.
5. Apparently like 700 girls were name carson every year for about 5 years but after 2003 people decided that it was a boys name and stopped naming their daughters it. haha.
6. Nothing really, I mean I ran it buy my girlfriend so I guess she kind of did since we agreed on it.
7. I haven't met anyone else with the name and everyone tells me how unique it is.

What is your name? Thomas Joshua M-  I go by Tom, though.

What does your name mean? It's in the username.  Thomas means "twin" and my last name means "The Hammer".  Joshua means "Jehovah is salvation"

Where is it derived from? Thomas and Joshua are both biblical names.

How did you choose it?  It's the name I would have gotten if I'd been born male.

Is it masculine, feminine, or unisex? masculine

What influenced your decision, if any? Family tradition.  My Dad chose the name because it's my grandfather's name, Joshua Thomas, with the names switched.  Family is very important to me.

Is it a common name where you're from? There are a lot of Toms around, yes.

What is your name?
Lachlann

What does your name mean?
Warrior from the land of Lochs.

Where is it derived from?
Gaelic(Irish spelling variation)

How did you choose it?
I'll  be honest, I was having a really hard time picking out a name. Alistair made a thread about choosing his own name and I saw Lachlan on there, and for some reason I just felt a real connection to it. I wanted something celtic sounding and was able to find the Irish variation which would match with part of my roots.

Is it masculine, feminine, or unisex?
Masculine.

What influenced your decision, if any?
Heritage and the fact that all the other names for my age just didn't suit me. This one has been really nagging at me and I feel it might be the real deal.

Is it a common name where you're from?
Depends. In Nova Scotia it is, but I am in Ontario. However, names tend to be diverse here because of the mixed cultures.

Is it masculine, feminine, or unisex? masculine name, that still sounds pretty(In my opinion)

What influenced your decision, if any? I love Elijah Wood, and I am fond of the letter E

Is it a common name where you're from? I have never met another Elijah (in person)

QuoteWhat does your name mean?Where is it derived from?
QuoteCHRISTOPHER

Gender: Masculine

Usage: English

Pronounced: KRIS-tə-fər  [key]
From the Late Greek name Χριστοφορος (Christophoros) meaning "bearing Christ", derived from Χριστος (Christos) combined with φερω (phero) "to bear, to carry". It was used by early Christians as a metaphorical name, expressing that they carried Christ in their hearts. In the Middle Ages, literal interpretations of the name's etymology led to legends about a Saint Christopher who carried the young Jesus across a river. He has come to be regarded as the patron saint of travellers.

As an English given name, Christopher has been in general use since the 15th century. In Denmark it was borne by three kings (their names are usually spelled Christoffer), including the 15th-century Christopher of Bavaria who also ruled Norway and Sweden. Other famous bearers include Italian explorer Christopher Columbus (1451-1506), English playwright Christopher Marlowe (1564-1593), and the fictional character Christopher Robin from A. A. Milne's 'Winnie-the-Pooh' books.

What is your name?  Lucien Anthony _____

What does your name mean?
Lucien:  (From Lucius) From the Latin "lux," meaning "light."
Anthony:  I've read that Anthony is a Roman Clan name used as a first name, and doesn't really have a meaning.

Where is it derived from?
L:  Latin
A:  Roman??

How did you choose it?
My original initials are A.L., so I picked names that were close to my birthname(s), but ended up liking Lucien a lot more than Anthony.  So I switched 'em!

Is it masculine, feminine, or unisex?
Pretty sure both are masculine.

What influenced your decision, if any?
Just my old initials.  But when I told my mom I was considering "Lucien" as a first name, she objected immediately.  She told me it reminded her of "Lucifer" and the devil.  Kinda funny, considering I'm an atheist anyway.  :P  But she's not going to be able to stop me from changing my name to Lucien Anthony.

Is it a common name where you're from?
Anthony is, but I've never met anyone named Lucien.

1) What is your name?
Justin Aiden

(last name to be determined but i'm liking Kinney....)

2) What does your name mean?
Justin: Just, Fair
Aiden: Little Fire
Kinney: (no idea)

3) Where is it derived from?
Justin: English
Aiden: Irish
Kinney: Irish/Scottish

4) How did you choose it?
Couple ways. One, I wanted to keep my Irish heritage (hence "Aiden" and maybe "Kinney"). But also wanted to have something that came from the TV show that changed my life for the better.

Not only did i like the name "Justin" to begin with but it symbolizes (at least to me) the trials and hardships teen minorities go through (ever see Queer as Folk and you'll know what i mean....) If i keep the last name as "Kinney" then that also ties to QaF and represents the one character i share a lot of beliefs with.

5) Is it masculine, feminine, or unisex?
Masculine

6) What influenced your decision, if any?
As i said before: my irish heritage and the show that "opened my eyes" so to speak. Not to mention it meshes so well together!  ^-^

7) Is it a common name where you're from?
I know a few Justins but haven't come across any Aidens. No Kinneys either.

What is your name? Zacharias

What does your name mean? Not sure...

Where is it derived from? Greek form of ZECHARIAH. This form of the name is used in most English versions of the New Testament to refer to the father of John the Baptist. It was also borne by an 8th-century pope (called Zachery in English)

How did you choose it? My girlfriend at the time named me. :3 I loved the name instantly.

Is it masculine, feminine, or unisex? Masculine

What influenced your decision, if any? Girlfriend found it, suggested it, and I loved it.

Is it a common name where you're from? Seen alot of Zachs, but never Zacharias. o.o

What is your name? Taylor Alix .....

What does your name mean? Taylor comes from "Tailor", which meant a lot to me because I kind of feel like I'm making myself out of the raw materials I was given. Alix means warrior or man's defender.

Where is it derived from? Taylor is Middle English / Old French and Alix is derived from the Greek Alexander.

How did you choose it? I always thought my name should've been Alex but then when the time came to choose a male name, I only wanted Alix as a middle name. Taylor came from a book I had read and the name stuck with me, it just felt like me.

Is it masculine, feminine, or unisex? Both are unisex.

What influenced your decision, if any? Just went with what felt comfortable and mine.

Is it a common name where you're from? Not really for guys my age, I've only ever heard of one.

I'm still undecided - which is why i chose a last name "just in case."

I would like to KEEP mine but it all depends on how things go with my family. My dad's the type of guy who could do one of two things:

1) Throw a fit but finally accept me as i am and be PROUD i kept my last name (even insist on it.)
or
2) Blow a fuse, kick me out, and refuse to have anything to do with me - including request i not use "his" families last name. IF that would be the case i would gladly change my last name. Using my mother's maiden name in connection is out too because i don't really like it....

What is your name?
Basically the male version of my female name.

How did you choose it?
There was a kid in my 5th grade class with the name and I remember liking it.

Is it masculine, feminine, or unisex?
Masculine.

What influenced your decision, if any?
At my age I wanted to keep my initials, wanted to respect the name my parents gave me, so chose the masculine version of my f name (that I hated).  There are other names I love more, but this was easiest in light of my work history and family history

Is it a common name where you're from?
It was among the 100 most popular names of my birth year also, common enough yes.

Strangely enough, I really hadn't thought about keeping the family name. Maybe because my middle name is a big tribute to my Dad, so I figured that was enough. Back home (Chile, S.America) lots of people have two apellidos (surnames; First, Middle, Father's Sur, Mother's Sur) so I can easily amend mine by adding "Gordon" between D------- and Tripp :)

Funny story: Because everyone in Chile has two surnames, whether they have a middle name or not, since I've only got one many people thought my father's surname was "Dionne" and my mother's, "Gordon." I had to explain that Dionne was my MIDDLE name, not my da's surname lol.

I changed my surname because I had always hated my previous surname (it was one of those nobody understands and you constantly have to spell it out and even then people get it wrong) and because my Dad is not at all accepting of my transition, in fact he said I was disgusting and a paedophile???! So I didn't want to be associated with him if I had the chance not to be.
