A top sex change doctor left patients devastated after recommending irreversible surgery without proper checks and told them they could finance the ops by working as escorts, a medical tribunal was told today (tue).
Doctor Russell Reid, a psychiatrist at the world-famous Charing Cross Hospital Gender Identity Clinic, allegedly broke guidelines for treating would-be transsexuals by prescribing hormones and allowing them to undergo painful and permanent surgery.
The allegations relate to five patients and the case is also being brought by four fellow psychiatrists from the Central London hospital, which is the oldest and largest treatment centre of its kind in the world.
This is a tragedy. We don't need this kind of publicity. What a shame.
Cindi
I agree Cindy, it is very tragic that those poor folks were duped that way. It's a sad state of affairs when even some medical professionals take short cuts, that's why I believe that unless something better comes along to replace the SOC it is up to us here at Susan's to prudently recommend those courses of action that promote our safety, and well being. And while the SOC are only guidelines and recommendations I see nothing that could replace them... yet.
