Title: Hair advice
Post by: Ryuu on November 09, 2009, 07:51:34 PM
Currently, I have a mohawk:

Now I know the whole "buzz cut hair makes you look like a girl" stuff. But I am wanting to get it cut somewhat soon (My band has a show on the 21st, so it'd be at least after that) and there's not really anything else you can do with a mohawk this narrow - if I left something on top it'd look silly. xD
I really like the idea of super short hair, so I want to know - how badly would it hurt my (already almost nonexistant) chances of passing?

I have a buzz haircut and I pass all the time....
I guess it varies with different people.

are you trying  to cut your hair in a #1,#2,#3 (length)etc...?

I have no idea what that means, actually. xD I was just going to shave off the mohawk part so it's all the same length.

I had a mohawk, and shaved the whole thing off when I got bored of it

instantly regretted it :P unless you have a super masculine face it just makes you look like a weird bald chick, which is never a good look.

but like you say, there's not much you can do with it, unless you're willing to put up with your hair looking weird and uneven while you wait for the side bits to grow out.

From the pictures you've posted I don't think that you would hurt your chances of passing if you got rid of the mohawk.

He's talking about gauges for clippers. I usually use a 2 myself on back and sides, really short but still not "buzzed" look, while leaving the top longer. From what I heard leaving it longer on the top is more masculine a cut and helps make your face look longer.

As far as your hair...I don't think there's much you can do til it grows out.

Yea,I think if you shave it off it would show your facial feature more.

I think you should leave some length on the top. Not as long as you have it now, but I think the shorter sides/back with length on top looks good. I don't think a buzz would hurt your chances of passing, but I think if you left a little on top, it would make the chance of passing a little higher. Just my opinion!

Despite the fact that many guys do go the buzzcut route, the general rule is that women get their hair cut the same length all over (if it's short), and for men, the top should be longer than the sides and back. However, that said, you've got a pretty feminine face. I assume you know this, and I hope I don't make you feel bad by saying it. It honestly may not matter how you cut your hair... you may just be stuck with being pegged as a girl or simply androgynous until you're able to get on T.

Dig the mohawk, though. Might look even better in neon.

Yeah unfortunately I only found out that I look better with longer hair after I cut it off. >.<
No, I don't pluck my eyebrows. Never have actually.
And yes I am aware of my feminine features. *is glad his mom is considering letting him have T before 18*

Lucky.

Too bad you cut your hair, just let the top grow out a bit. Like my cut, but more even of course.

And not curly. I refuse to scar my scalp with irons. :P

Hey, Aaron. I used to have a mohawk, too, on and off for years. The length of the hawk itself varied anywhere from several inches to chin length; I've found that letting the sides get kinda long isn't all that bad really, especially if you've got length on top- so I'd just quit shaving the sides and let them grow out a little, maybe a month depending on how quick your stubble grows, if you're concerned about avoiding that 'totally bald chick/waifboy' look when you do go ahead and shave the long part off. That way you can go straight to having a buzz type cut with a little more on top, instead of the bald look.

I'm not trying to be offensive, but your current hair is pretty feminizing/reveals your face and skull shape a lot, so you're not going to ruin your pass-ability by shaving the rest off. And even if you're worried you'll look like a mook with no hair, it'll be a month, maybe two tops, for it to grow back out again into something you can manipulate via shaving lengths, so even if you do go bald-ish you won't be stuck that way for very long. :)

I know this is all about OP, but seeing as this is about hair I'd like to ask something.

Does your hair length really matter? Is it more of the individuals features that are the deciding factor of this? I ask because I have long hair, just past my shoulders. I'm not used to the whole short thing, I'm new at all this, but I'm not trying to go all Repunsel or anything. I like to cut my hair to a medium length for males and grow it out to a fairly long length. I've passed quite well in my past when I had been doing nothing to get such comments. I'm just really curious and I'm sorry if I shouldn't have posted here.

Aaron, from what I can see you can pass. You're young I assume, with your "18" comment. If only passing for your age or younger as male, it's still passing. I would think that cutting off your mohawk would actually make you pass better IMO, but I don't know as much as some other guys around here.  :-\

It generally depends on your features. Haircuts regardless of gender are dependent on your face shape. Sometimes colour pops up, but usually not.

i don't think you'll pass any less well with a shaved head than a mohawk... or at least not considerably worse.  The reason short hair sucks for passing is it doesn't cover up as much of your girly features in your face as longer hair.  A mohawk lacks the same covering skills.  I'd say shave it off and grow it out.

You're not going to be able to avoid the shaving it off (unless you awkwardly let the whole thing grow out and then cut it uniformly once your other hair has filled in a bit) but I wouldn't suggest maintaining the buzz cut.  I think they even look generally retarded on cis guys to be honest.

Yeah I suppose you're right. Idk what haircut I'd get once it grows out though... I don't think long hair really helps my passing either. Actually I'm not sure how hard I should really try to pass right now since I have such a feminine face/voice/body. :( But if you have an idea for a haircut you think would help, definitely tell me!!

try for a stoner (or i suppose skater kid) shaggy hair cut.  If you're in a band/play shows it still can easily work as a grungy mess on stage, but still be cleaned up alright to look cute.  The shape of it also allows for coverage of feminine features especially overall facial shape/outline wise.
