Title: Dude! That totally made my day!
Post by: Jamie-o on November 10, 2009, 06:40:50 AM
It's funny the things that become exciting when you transition.  Today one of my co-workers called me dude!  ;D  I never thought the phrase, "S'up, dude?" would ever make me so thrilled.  In fact, a couple of the guys I work with have been making a point of including me as "one of the guys", which is really very cool of them.   :icon_joy: :icon_woowoo:  :icon_geekdance:

Something like this happened with me the other day, too. My father was telling me, 'to be honest, I never really considered you very masculine, or my 'son', just a tomboy.'  A few minutes after that he became busy with a conference call from work- while he was occupied, my phone started ringing(it used to be his work phone, so I sometimes get calls from people looking for him) and there was this guy on it asking for my father.

I told the guy, sorry, this cell phone isn't his anymore. 'This is his... Uhh, child,' I said. I said CHILD, not daughter/son. The guy tells me that's fine, I'll just email him instead. 15 minutes later, my dad starts laughing to himself. I ask him, what? He says, 'I just got an email from human resources stating that he tried to call, but got ahold of my son instead of me. My son?'

That really made my day. It felt like such an honor to be considered my fathers son, especially through hearing my voice over the phone.

Yeah I'm getting it more, it's cold now and my arms are not on display, but T is also changing my face, and a funny one was yesterday .... checker guy at Safeway, 20-30 something, with whom I talked a bit, I used my Safeway card and apparently those come up with the user's name and the checkers are instructed to say "thank you" (or something) and the person's name ... I got "Thanks, miss...ter carter" maybe it comes up with Miss on there, but the guy gave me a check over and added the 'ter" lol.

I should get a new card and put in that I'm male lol.

Yeah, I definitely see "dude" as a masculine word.

The opposite of which being, "chick."  Chicks and dudes.  Haha...

Dude is just like using the term 'guys', it can be neutral depending on where you live and how it's said.

I'm not  "out" particularly in my classes.  I'm out to my peers at school ect., but I didn't feel comfortable in the place I was at at the beginning of the semester to make a big thing to my professors about  using male pronouns.  I also go by Rosey (which i semi plan to maintain after fully transitioning anyway.)  I'm on T, and have almost always been able to pass except in voice and to some observant people.  Still in classes/labs I expect people to read me as female, and most people refer to me as "she" in my lab classes this semester.

Anyway I have a crush on a girl in my lab class.  Our lab let out early on monday, but there was an extra credit seminar an hour or so later on that our teacher strongly advised we attend (duh.)  So I suggest that we head back to my apartment to toke a bowl before the seminar (me and this girl and her lab partner had discussed the activity previously) and we did so.  The whole time I'm of course assuming they see me as a girl.  We get back to my apartment and the cute girl repeatedly refers to me as "he" and said "his room is so awesome." (it is. =p but anyway) It was pretty much fantastic.  Total confidence boost right there.  (and its always nice to know that I can pass as a boy named Rosey [though not exclusively "rosey" of course])

I am so asking her to chill again now that I know I'm not some creepy manly lesbian to her.

At work I'm pretty much considered one of the guys anyway. I always seem to have been- sometimes more than other male employees!

The other day I too had a great experience. I was going over some paper work with one of the salesmen and he said "yes sir". He corrected himself and I didn't say anything. I don't think he realised how happy that made me considering I haven't told work yet. ;D I'm also loving being called "sir" on the phone. Sometimes it's the little things. :D

lol that's great.  I started doing it on accident.  My Rite Aid card came with Ms. on it.  It was still my current name but it actually made me a little happy.  So all my customer care cards like speedway, boarders and such say Ms.  I've only been asked about it once.  I just told - the huge biker looking guy at a speedway in BFE - it's so I know who's giving my name to the junk mail people :P  He laughed and said that was a good idea.
