George Contini has felt pushed to tell the unusual theater story for 30 years. Another nudge came this spring in a Dahlonega antique shop, "of all places."

No small irony that Contini's journey to Eltinge, a famous actor and female impersonator, began with a performance of Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest."

A college sophomore at the time, Contini played a female character named Lady Bracknell. After the show's run, the young actor was gifted with another old theater program. It featured what looked like a beautiful woman on the front. A different page showed a man hawking beauty tips. They were the same person.
