CROSS-DRESSING students at The University of Sheffield are to be allowed to join the women's committee - after the union passed a motion to treat 'self-defining women' as females.
The decision means membership of the women's committee will be open to all students who consider themselves to be female - even if they are transvestite males.
Only one representative voted against the proposal at a students' union council meeting.
Can the media start referring to such individuals as crossdressers? Most crossdressers do not like to be called "transvestites" similar to the fact that most black people don't like to be called "colored." This is nearly 2010 and the media still can't show us the most basic level of respect. If they can write an article on the news, they should have time to read something for a change about transgender issues so that they can get it right!
Transvestite is still used in a number of European countries.

That is a good article. I would never have dressed while going to school out of fear physical violence. Some cultures are still in the dark ages concerning the TG community. Britney is correct about the term transvestite. It usually refers to a CD who dresses for sexual arrousal (paraphilia). Drag Queens normally dress to perform. Some of us dress in order to identify with true gender.
'self-defining women'
I like that :)
