Title: Straightlaced - Did Anyone See This Movie?
Post by: Dante on December 07, 2009, 10:41:39 PM
In my HI class (it's short for Human Interactions), in one of the last weeks of the semester (class is only a semester long), we are finally getting to the discussion of gender identity. I'm not sure how far we're going to go into it, and that makes me nervous and almost excited in a way.

Anyways, to the point of my post. We watched this movie on Friday called "Straightlaced: How Gender's Got Us All Tied Up". It was pretty interesting, and it basically was talking about how people assume that people are gay if they aren't perfectly fitting gender roles, or how everything is made for either boys or girls. Of some interest, there was one androgynous person (biologically female) and one MTF transgendered student. As usual, no FTM people, but the movie was pretty good at exploiting human error and assumptions when it comes to gender and sexual orientation.

So my question; has anybody seen this movie or something similar? And do you think that these kinds of movies portray gender expression, sexual orientation, and people who do not conform to typical gender expression (transgender, transsexual, androgynous, etc.) accurately?
