Must Love Dogs!
Dermot Mulroney AND John Cusack!
Oh, I flutter! Beautiful boys!
Plus, 27 Dresses. Because James Marsden has the eyes. And anything with Hugh Grant. What a prince. :-*

I really love rom-coms! Notting Hill with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant is a favorite. And I can watch anything with Sandra Bullock. I absolutely loved While You Were Sleeping. And Speed, of course- though that probably doesn't fit here. I haven't been able to see Blind Side yet, but I'm gonna!
Notting Hill

And my all time Favorite:
The Devil Wears Prada
I hate it when people just make lists with no reasons, so I'll give reasons.
Beaches - The trouble with many such movies is that they are all but impossible to believe, but somehow this one avoids that. I think it offers a rare (perhaps because its female written and many of these have men writing them) realistic look at female friendships over time. Bette of course is always awesome at doing what she does best, which is basically portraying her own persona, and Barbra Hershey is a great actor who never got the props, or the roles, she deserved.
What makes the ending such a tearjerker, is not the side story of the kid (who we all know, once she gets over mom's death is just going to have a gas being Bette's 'daughter') but the very real feeling the two of them give that despite all the other people in their lives, they were the two who could really talk to each other, and that will be gone forever.
The Devil Wears Prada - beyond awesome, but I bet for a different reason than most who like it (on this board at least) really like it. I found Anne Hathaway - like most of her roles - to be OK, believable in this kind of standard fish-out-of-water story, but what made is great is Merle Streep's portrayal of Miranda Pristley. I bet when all is said and done, even given the kind of roles she has had (and will have) this is going to stand as one of her defining moments. She channels 'bitch with power' in such a fashion that its not only chilling, but awesomely funny. Streep gets all the props for her drama, which I never found as compelling has her comedy, which nobody seems to get. It that it is the exact opposite of all the 'bitches with power' we've seen, who tend to be shrill, overly dramatic, and very 'hot' people. Miranda Pristley is cold like ice to the bone, and its killer stuff to watch. She never raises her voice, she doesn't have to. When in one scene you see her start to get excited - the speech about fashion - you can watch her visibly pull herself in to remain in control.
Even in the beginning, the first time we meet her there is this exchange:
Miranda Priestly: ...You have no sense of fashion...
Andy Sachs: I think that depends on...
Miranda Priestly: No, no, that wasn't a question.
I could watch her deliver that No, no, that wasn't a question line all day long.
But she also has these gems, memorable all of them.
The details of your incompetence do not interest me.
By all means move at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills me.
But I think the best is how totally sold she is on being that person, when it comes up that not everyone might want to live like this Miranda says:
Oh, don't be ridiculous. Andrea. Everybody wants this. Everybody wants to be us.
And you know that she really believes that everybody does want to be her.
Sex in the City - no more plot than the series ever had, but who cares? Those girls are so good at those roles by now, and are ever so comfortable playing them against one another that its a joy to watch. And they are adults, not as often happens to women in movies, little girls playing adults. In that I mean its about successful professional women in NY who act like adults. The make adult decisions and take adult responsibility for those decisions. Kind of refreshing.
Little Women - the '33 version. Because Kathrine Hepburn was born to play Jo March. The 40s version, all technicolor is prettier, but damn that June Allison is so damn perkey it makes me want to puke, though having Janet Leigh and Elizabeth Taylor against each other is sheer beauty. Never did like the one with Wynona who just was never Jo. Though Claire Danes was good. I think that what makes me mad about that one is watching Susan Sarandon do such a good job on the mom, all the while I'm thinking had she done Jo back when she was younger she might have given Hepburn a run for the money.
The Lake House and The Notebook. :)
Tekla, I totally agree, The Devil Wears Prada, is all about story and characters. Streep's performance was flat out amazing. I love the fact that the only time she is without makeup or clothes is during the divorce scene, you can see her struggling and then she just pulls it together and is the ice queen again.
I did love Blunt and Tucci also, those two were perfect compliments.
The clothes are just icing on the cake.
Return to me !

I hear The Princess Bride quotes all the time passed between dudes.
The Princess Bride is more of a dork flick. I know it's a fun show but quoting it by either gender is just meh. I love you all but it's true, you may as well put on Spock ears and wear a light sword.
If that's your crowd then go for it, they aren't really a judgmental bunch.

Well I guess I hang with the (virtual) dorks then because we quote it a lot, of course we quote all kinds of films a lot, and we are (almost) all Trek fans...
but I don't necessarily concede that being quick with a pop-culture reference rejoinder makes you a dork though.
The quote could just as easily be from Star Wars, Star Trek, TPB, the Untouchables, or Loony Tunes.
the reason I suggested it as a possible chick flick is because it ultimately revolves around a sugary love story. the fact that it has more sly humor than your usual tear-jerker might make it something other than your run of the mill chick-flick but then that's why I love it.
another one I love that hasn't been mentioned in this thread is "An Officer and a Gentleman"

LOL, most of my guy friends haven't even seen Goodfellas, and I think The Princess Bride gets quoted about as often as The Big Lebowski among my guy friends (that's a lot, but not as much as Glee or Monty Python).
Then again, I might just have weird guy friends.
Girl interrupted. - Maybe because of Angelina Jolie's performance, maybe because I was in a similar situation at 14, or maybe just because I love Angelina Jolie.
Anne of Green Gables 1 and 2 (3 wasn't so great) - love the books, love Anne, love Megan Follows as Anne.
Titanic - who doesn't love it?
Selena - J Lo was so hot back then, and the music is good too.
Anything on Lifetime with Tiffani-Amber Thiessen getting ravished, killed, etc.

Ok let's see
Pretty Woman
Bridget Jones (all three)
The Lake House
Before Sunrise & Before Sunset
Breakfast at Tifany's
and does "Room with a View" count?
I could go on... Basically if it's a chick flick and emotional I like it.
PS - yes I think both Brokeback and Transamerica count too!
I feel dumb, most of those I have never heard of and some i have heard of but never seen.
I did like girl interrupted tho
Well groups of straight guys were not lining up to see a gay cowboy movie - that's for sure. Somehow it wasn't the bonding event that James Bond movies are. But I do know a lot of girls who like it, though their focus is often on what happens to the women, not the guys. The performance by Michelle Williams as you watch her visibly disintegrate is amazing.
Girls, we need to take this boy to the movies. He has a lot to see. ;)

The Sound of Music- is my all-time chick flick.
Sex and the City...well, of course.
Pretty Woman also
I also enjoyed watching Message In A Bottle with Kevin Costner & Robin Wright Penn.
Seeing all these movies, I just had to throw out a few of my fav's, pretty sure they all count as chick flicks :P
A Walk in the Clouds
Simply Irresistible
P.S. I love you
Murphy's Romance
I can't believe I forgot about Girl Interrupted amazing movie!!
Other than the ones mentioned before, my choices are:
Dan in Real Life
Bridges of Madison County
Coming Home
Mamma Mia
Somewhere in Africa
Maggie
Wow. Lots of good choices here. I was going to say "When Harry Met Sally," "Sleepless in Seattle," and "Bridget Jones Diary," and "The Devil Wears Prada," but I see they've already been covered. So how about a couple that weren't such huge hits but are definitely worth checking out on DVD...
Music and Lyrics, with Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore
I'll Be There, with Craig Ferguson (yes THAT Craig Ferguson) and Charlotte Church (yes THAT Charlotte Church)
A walk in the clouds, the lakehouse, devil wears prada, sleepless in seattle, havoc, city of god ;)
Jacob's Ladder?

The Notebook is pretty good.
Divine secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood,
New in Town,
The Proposal,
Ghosts of Girlfriends Past,
Serendipity.
don't know if "My Sisters' Keeper" counts as a chick flick but it's definitely a tear jerker
Mine is "When Harry Met Sally...". I never get tired of that movie. I watch it with my BF all the time. I do love "Sleepless in Seattle" and "You Got Mail", too.
Alot of Meg Ryan stuff which have been mentioned, Sandra Bullock and Hugh grant stuff :)
The other ones I love that come to mind, I consider them chick flicks because my bf hates them, my gfs love em.
1. Sisterhood of the travelling pants,
2. Amelie
3. Mean girls
4. 13 going on 30
5. White oleander
6. Closer
Sisterhood of the traveling pants......could be interesting I guess
I LOVE these types of movies but I couldn't make it through more than the first 8 minutes of sisterhood of pants. Yaya sisterhood was o.k. but...idk. The piano was drudgery.
pretty much anything with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan,
Love Actually, Witches of Eastwick, and Somethings Got to Give.

Lifetime movies are good. Is it weird that I like lifetime movies? A guy at work once said to my friend, (who is a real guy) "Why are you watching a lifetime movie?", lifetime movies are for women." I told my friend "guys watch lifetime movies too." And the guy replied to me saying, "Yeah but your a girl, it's okay if you watch lifetime", but he's a guy". This guy didn't know I was trans. But I like lifetime movies, a lot of them are good. Especially the ones with Tracey Gold. She's a major HOTTIE!!! I really don't like to label thing like "this is a guy thing" and "this is a girl thing". Ya like what you like, ya know? It's doesn't make you more or less of a guy if you like something that is considered for women or more or less of a girl if you like guy stuff.
"Boys on the side" I really loved this movie. And the love and admiration the flowed throught these women.Mary-louise parker had me in tears. She was an uptight business type that knew she was dying .This movie showed me how loving and strong a women can be.A macho guy movie can't hold a candle to what these women where going through and faced it head on
Titanic, Clerks 2, under the Tuscan sun, unfaithful, pretty in pink, etc.
I like two rather old movies now...
From the 1970's "One Flew Over The Cookoo's Nest" directed by Milos Forman.
And from the original movie with Audrey Hepburn starring lead role, "Breakfast at Tiffany's. (1960's)
Of course there have been lots of brilliant movies out right up to current times.

Well, I can't agree on Tracey Gold, because I saw enough of her on Growing Pains to last a lifetime. LOL. But I love Lifetime movies, too. Can't help it. They're just so ridiculously over-dramatized, but for some reason, enticing plot-wise.
Other chick flicks I dig (no, I'm not ashamed... really...):
Mean Girls
A Lot Like Love
A Cinderella Story
Raise Your Voice
Freaky Friday (both versions, really)
Benny & Joon
13 Going on 30
Clueless
Nick & Nora's Infinite Playlist
He's Just Not That Into You
There are tons more, I just can't really think of them right now. However, I don't see how Girl, Interrupted qualifies as a chick flick. It was just a kickass drama. Well... whatever works.

Benny & Joon
I have an uncle who has a mental disability. Growing up semi-isolated, I found rather odd ways to sometimes entertain myself and others, or, atleast I had time then to make an original attempt at humor - so I can definately relate to the quirky, fun-loving and good hearted character that Johnny Depp played.
As far as Joon goes - I too am a creative, sensitive, and intelligent (not to brag) person. As young as I was when this movie came out, I was also a bit eclectic and stoic back then. So the movie really fit me at the time.
The Proposal
I mention it because although it was a very predictable movie I thought it was sweet. A bit unrealistic but a fanstasy filled with just the right amount of humor and romance for me.
It's a Boy Girl Thing
There are a lot of good movies listed in this thread. I like many of them, and added comments on two of them. This movie I have not seen mentioned yet though (I could be wrong). But I think it's definately worth mentioning.
I torrented this movie, being bored and just wanting to watch something entertaining. I was thinking it would have been a waste of time to watch, I hadn't ever heard of it.
I watched it with an open mind just hoping to be entertained. I was very surprised! I enjoyed this movie and think the acting in it is just short of brilliant. It's hilariously funny at times - some of the facial expressions Nell (Samaire Armstrong) makes had me rolling in tears! Kevin Zegers did a pretty good job too, with the script he had to work worth. It didn't win any awards but it is a light heated journey that left me smiling for days.
o-o-o-o-o I want to add two to my list.. I saw them the other night and they are now in my top 5 movies of all time!!!!
Whip It which is just a fun loveable movie and
The Ugly Truth, seriously I haven't laughed from a movie so much for ......ever? Highly recommend The Ugly Truth!!!!!

i know im only 30 and i know these movies cameout in the 80's but
steel magnolia's
and fried greeen tomatos
always get me plus in both movies ther are lagh your ass off funny parts
I've just seen Legally Blond the Musical - the cast were terrific and the songs catchy and chirpy, but i couldn't get any more into it than that. Unlike La Cage Aux Folles, which really holds the emotions.
Also, unlike the similarly shallow Pricilla musical, there wasn't enough spectacle to make up for it. It is good stuff though, and if you find the whole 'omigod' thing more amusing it is probably a must see sort of a thing.
The phantom of the opera...(2004 with Gerald Butler as phantom) Just...absolutly heart wrenching
A walk to remember
I do not see Ghost mentioned. Yes Love Story is a good one
I totally forgot 'Fried Green Tomatoes", and I love that movie.
Now you see this one doesn't really count as a chick flick, it's 15 hours long and animated but you shouldn't judge it till you see it, I recommended it to any human person between the ages of 0-200.
Wolf's Rain. Hands down that movie/show makes me cry, I litterally can't watch it with other people because the sad part is about the last 4 hours and I cry for the last 10 just thinking about the last 4. Truely
She The Ultimate weapon. I know its anime but it is a beautiful love story. Here is an outline:-
What do you do when the girl you love becomes a weapon of mass destruction?
The last love song on this little planet.
Shuji and Chise have a problem. Their blossoming love is cut short when Chise is taken by the government and turned into a weapon of war. Will their love survive the chaos and violence of the battlefield?
She: The Ultimate Weapon presents a romance struggling to blossom against the adversity of war and the psychological afteraffects that massive conflict leaves behind even after the guns have fallen silent.

Boys on the side
Ghost

pretty woman
I began falling into the romantic comedy genre by accident.
When Harry Met Sally
50 First Dates (surprisingly good)
Mean Girls
My Life In Ruins
Under The Tuscan Sun
forgot top gun
love letters
Normally I'm not a chick-flick fan, but there are a few I can't help but like.
My favorite, though, would be 'Ever After.'
It's so well done! The right amount of comedy, romance, adventure, and did I say comedy? And I'm such a sucker for period pieces.... :icon_weee:
Breakfast at Tiffany's for sure, I love Audrey Hepburn :). I also love Jeunet and Audrey Tautou, so Amelie and Un Longe Dimanche de Fiancailles.
Bridget Jones's Diary :P
African Queen
It's interesting that a few of the posts here mention guys watching "chick flicks" too.
When my eldest was in the last year of High School, it came out that all the guys in the class watched "Saddle Club", supposedly a local "teenage girl's" TV show about a riding school!

My 24 year old son has said many times Princess Bride screwed up any chance he'll ever have a real relationship. He said he grew up watching Princess Bride so many times (my fault!) he thought this is how romance is supposed to be. Needless to say, he's been disappointed more than once.
In the event Buttercup and Wesley divorced, I'm sure I can find a proper suitor for Buttercup. ;D
For newer movies, I just saw It's Complicated which I enjoyed. Love Meryl Streep!!
Gentlemen Perfer Blondes.
But my current new favorite is 'Mean Girls' I can quote that movie from start to finish.
If I flick a chick with or without a bic, does that count?

Kate and Leopold - just enough sci-fi geekery to temper the saccharine sweetness.
Sounds intriguing, now I shall have to watch it.

Has Hugh Jackman and Liev Schreiber in it too :D
sorry, I don't know actors, never really cared. I only cared how well they portrayed who they were trying to show.
I watched Two Weeks Notice this afternoon. It wasn't my fave ever by any means, but it had all the right elements that I want from these types of movies, right up to giving me happy tears at the end :).
No love for A League of Their Own? Geena Davis was awesome, and its the best role either Madonna or Rosie ever had.
But if you ever get fed up with love, there's always Whose Afraid of Virginia Wolfe. The movie that makes you think that staying single for the rest of your life would be a damn fine idea.

Haha I actually heard my dad watching A League of Their Own earlier, must have been on tv though as I don't believe we own it. I've seen it quite a few times, even from when I was really young. We used to have it on Laser Disc... man are those things old now...
Oh my, so many good ones. 'When Harry Met Sally', The Notebook', 'Pretty Woman' to be sure. I don't know if it's a tie or just because I have some emotionally favorite parts in each.
Love Actually.
Other than that, not sure if it counts, but I love White Christmas, I must've watched it a thousand times. Although my mom is always watching it without me with the justification "I don't think it's really Dan's sort of film". ::)
I have just watched "The Women" for the second time, and found things I missed the first time. Great movie. It has to qualify as the ultimate 'chick flick' because there are NO men in it.
At all!
I never appreciated Annette Benning as an actress before, but she was great. Also Meg Ryan, Jayda Pinkett, Debra Messing, Candice Bergen, all good.
Several people mentioned "The Notebook." I found it schmaltzy and hated it.
I liked "Thelma @ Louise", "Steel Magnolias", and "The Spitfire Grill."
New to the list:
You Can Count on Me
Ponette
Sense and Sensibility
Tess
Little Miss Sunshine
Boys Don't Cry
What's Eating Gilbert Grape
The Story of Adele H.
The Music Man
Gypsy (love all versions)
Agree with others about:
Eternal Sunshine...
Princess Bride
When Harry Met Sally
The Rose
Thelma and Louise
Casablanca
Hedwig
Spitfire Grill
Amelie
The Rose, The Notebook and Mean Girls! =]

Such an awesome movie. I wanted to get a pair of blades right after and bodycheck random people on the street. ;D

Totally! Although it made me go 'Waaaaaaaaah, I never got to be a hot teenage girl hanging with hot boys" and do the whole self-pity routine. Lots of teeny chick flicks do that to me.
Hehe this convo made me listen to the Whip It soundtrack which is also pretty hot. I dig the self-pity moment, just remember; you can always be the hot chick smashing up other chicks . ;)
First Wives Club :o
My mom says it's "not my sort of film" so to watch it I have to wait till other people are and oh dear, guess I'll have to watch it too, nothing else to do. :p
27 dresses for the most recent probably. I watch a ton of movies so this changes often...
I'm going to add A Walk To Remember to my list :)
