Title: Shaving
Post by: notyouraverageguy on December 10, 2009, 02:02:39 AM
Is there a difference between shaving with a multi-bladed razor, and shaving with a single-bladed razor blade?

Doctors say its a myth that when you shave it makes the hair come in quicker, thicker, and darker.. I beg to differ..

How often do you shave, if you shave anything at all?
How do you shave, what do you use?

Well, it's hard to know if it's come in quicker if you've never paid attention to when you got peach fuzz, which I believe is always. It doesn't really come in thicker, but it'll feel and look that way because you're cutting off the soft end of it, hence it's a lot more pricklier and noticeable. You're not altering it aside from cutting it down to the thickest part.

I shave only sometimes, I haven't noticed if coming in quicker because I shaved it. Comes in at the same rate every time. I kind of do it in secret with one of my dad's shoddy disposables. I can't tell you if there's a difference, aside from how sharp it is.

Ahh sharpness..

Brand new razors make nicks and cuts, but old razors don't cut at all. I like one when its in between, a nice smooth shave with no blood. Yuck.

I haven't cut myself yet, but we'll see how that fairs when I actually have to get a razor of my own.

I hardly ever shave, maybe once every3/4months.  Its the first time that ive been able to grow heaps of facial hair so i dont want to get rid of it! Sometimes i use clippers and trim but other then that i leave it.  My friends tell me i need to shave but i say that it will keep me warmer in the winter and not to be jealous :P

No clippers (I use scissors) but I waited long time for it, why shave it off.

I'm Pre-T for another week or so but I have been shaving for a good 4 months now. I shave about every week with a double or triple blade. Maybe I'm just noticing more but my peach fuzz seems to return faster and faster, maybe I'm just feeling for it though.

regular razors make me break out, so i use an electric one.  if i dont shave at least 1 time a week i look super goofy.  i usually shave like every 3 weeks or so anyway.  haha

after i let it grow my skin gets itchy and i get quite a few pimples but luckily my facial hair covers them.  I get them mostly on the jawline.
I use to have a bald patch just under my chin but now the hairs grown in :D
I was just ecstatic when i got to by my first razor, matching shave cream and aftershave gel! went for Gillette, something that was masculine!

I hate having a fuzzy face. I shave every week or two, depending on when my pre-T peach fuzz gets noticeable.

A triple-bladed razor for now, but I'm keen on getting myself a straight-razor.

I use a regular glycerin shaving soap in the bottom of an old coffee mug, and a cheap dollar-store brush. Does me way better than the shaving creams I've tried (every single one of which has made me either break out or have a reaction. I swear I'm allergic to f*&% everything).

I get the razors that come in a bag, a bunch of 'em cheap. And Barbasol, it's the beard buster, says so right on the can. I guess the razors I'm using now are double blade so  I checked that. One lasts me forever.

My buddy Mark uses an electric shaver but I dunno, I like the way I do it, the Barbasol smells nice and it's neat to be so smooth for a bit, it doesn't last lol.

I use a triple bladed Gillette, with foam and care and hot water.
I even taught my hubby how to shave with one, as he'd only ever used an electrical one in the past. ^^

I've never cut myself shaving.. not my face anyway.
I used to shave my head, I cut myself doing that once.

The trick is to tilt the head around and stretch the skin a little bit, and to go "with" the direction of the hairgrowth, not against!
Get a close shave, and no nicks and cuts.

I don't shave.  I use beard trimmers.  ;D

See avatar.

P.S.  Prior to beard growth I did use cheapy disposeable razors, twin blade, and some shaving lotion to shave the peach fuzz and then the patchy stuff.

Mins got it.  The Mach 3 Gillette is the best I've ever found, last much longer than the plastic ones, somewhat greener, and a lot sharper.  I try every new one to come out - I'm waiting for Octomam to endorse an 8 bladed razor - and I always end the trial and go back to the Gillette.

I'm using the Mach 3 heads on an Old Old pink Gillette body I was given by mum way back when... cause I'm too cheap to get a new one (or rather.. this one works, the handle is comfy.. why waste it?)

I like to spoil myself [be lazy] and go to the barber once a week for a shave.  When I use a razor on myself I find that my face breaks out no matter what I use.

Aftershave, or just rubbing alcohol may help. Ouch! but it may help. I dunno how I've been so lucky, my zits have been minimal.

In my own case I"m shaving every 3 days, but if I go someplace where I want to look squared away, I shave that morning.

I wish I could say the same, my face wasn't even this bad in high school. You're right, the rubbing alcohol, painful as it is.. Seems to be the only thing that helps. Am I the only one getting in grown hairs, bumps, if you don't use the alcohol/aftershave?

Shaving annoys me. I'd prefer to just leave everything the way it is, but then I'd end up looking Amish. For awhile I went with the scrub look, only trimming my facial hair so it was basically anywhere from a 5 o'clock shadow to a really unkempt beard depending on the day. A couple weeks ago I decided to shave it into a goatee, and I've been keeping it up for awhile... going to see how long the beard will grow. I shave with an electric razor; years of shaving my legs and pits with disposables got me fed up with them. With an electric, I never get cuts, but it is slightly less effective. Oh, and as far as how often I shave... if I wanted to be clean-shaven, I'd have to shave twice a day. As it is, I usually shave every other day and deal with having stubble.

Not a huge one, if there's one at all.  I think I've noticed a closer shave with both multi-blade razors and straight razors than with single-blade safety razors, but it's probably something only I notice, which means it's possible my eyes could deceive.

If I have time in the mornings, I prefer a straight razor, simple because, as long as you take good care of it, it's a one-time purchase and therefore saves hella money in the potential decades you'll be using it.  But I don't often have much time, so I use a multi-blade safety (Shick Quattro with the fifth "detail blade").

Quote from: ccc on December 10, 2009, 02:02:39 AMDoctors say its a myth that when you shave it makes the hair come in quicker, thicker, and darker.. I beg to differ..

Sorry, this IS a myth.  What you've noticed is an optical illusion.  Every individual; hair on your body has its own "life cycle", of a sort.  Each individual hair grows for a set amount of time, then falls out, and as long as the root is still viable, a new one will grow in its place.  Hair also grows at a taper, so when you shave it off before its life-cycle ends, it's like when you stand a cont on a table on its widest end, then cut off at the horizon about halfway down.

The hair growth cycle has three phases:  Active growth or Anagen, Catagen or a period of transition, and then dormancy or telogen.  Now since hair has a purpose of not only added warmth, but protecting the skin, epidermal signals can extend Anagen if the skin signals that the hair has been cut too close to the skin.  At that point, Anagen gets a bit of a signal to keep on going, and that gives the hair the signal to grow again.  The abrasion of shaving probably helps this "reboot", as well.  This is why shaving creates the illusion of thicker hair; waxing and other epilation methods (pastes such as Nad's, plucking, etc...) thus seem to produce "finer" re-growth because you've removed the hair at the root, so it has to start from scratch -- and why repeated implementation of these methods often enough "kills" the root, preventing re-growth.

Shave the face two to three times a week (basically every third day).  Nair once or twice a month elsewhere, except pits and pubes.

Evan, have you tried lotion made for men to use after shaving instead of alcohol aftershave? That helps me alot.

No, it's true. You get the closest shave with a straight razor. My grandpa was a barber and that's what he told me. I've had other guys tell me the same.

Yeah, but since most guys shave first thing in the morning, all hung-over and still half asleep is not the best conditions to put a straight razor up to your throat.

They are intimidating (to me anyway). It doesn't help they were used in the past alot to kill people. **Sweeney Todd flashbacks**

according to something i heard...somewhere...straight razors are really making a comeback. i wouldn't know, because i haven't tried one. but they will last forever and stay very sharp. on the down side, it's not something i would use unless i was very coordinated.

Yeah, there's a reason that safety razors caught on.  I really like mine, and personally found it easier to use than I expected, but it's still not something I'd want to rush, even though I've only even nicked myself twice (and each time after using it maybe a year).
