Why or why not?
Do you think so-called 'hauntings' can be explained by some other phenomena? Or are they 'imprints' of souls departed?
Not only do I believe in spiritual appreciations, I have wittiness them first hand. Many will think I am smoking the wacky tobacy, but I have had experiences that would make the biggest man cry like a baby.
And when Heather see this thread, she will most likely post things she has show me on the net.
Blessed Be
Janet
I admit I do, primarily because I believe in the existence of souls and the "energy" it is made of.
I know of many of the logical arguments against it, and I accept fully I may be mistaken, but I do.
Mind you, I feel most hauntings are in fact just mundane things and/or "the expectation of a haunting" at play and not an actual disincarnated entity walking around.
I've also experienced "things".
I lived in a haunted house for awhile. The "ghost" in the house was helpful and would sometimes play tricks The one outside was much more fighting.
I think some people are much more sensitive or open to feeling them.
I've been to New Orleans several times pre Katrina and that city is very haunted.
I've stayed in many places that were considered haunted. Mostly as a non-believer ready to de-bunk the claims
But after seeing, hearing and feeling various things, I'm not so ready to de-bunk
Actually, I believe I have met the murderers of these spirits.
It is said that the perp. will return to the scene of the crime. That at least I believe is true.
I do, but I don't want to at the same time. I guess I'm not sure what to believe and don't want to seem crazy.
I do not believe in anything. Not God or magic,or hope, or destiny, or spirits, or hell, or afterlife, or faith, etc. I just know good planning gives you the best probability.
I am a ghost. :o
I knew you seemed like me somehow.
modified because that ghost emoticon doesn't show up.
Boooooogy Boooooogy........ Boo!!!
Dang!!! your right, the ghost emoticon doesn't show up
I do believe in spirits as conscious, individual entities. I've never met one like humans are, but I have encountered animal spirits and other creatures I can't explain.
We should remember that our brains are complicated biochemical machines and when we see something that is absolutely inconcievable to them they will actually add or remove sensory input to make it comprehensible. We could very well just be experiencing natural creatures or phenomenon that our brains just can't register so they create ghosts out of it.
Generally I keep an open mind with regards to things possibly existing.
But I don't 'believe' until I run into one. So, not at the moment.
I honestly don't know whether to believe in ghosts or not. I've experienced some odd things at the theater at my school and some of the things I saw or felt, others saw or felt too. So it would seem that yes, ghosts exist, but whether they are deceased people/animals, I have no idea. However, at the same time, it makes no sense to me that ghosts are real.
Though I do think a lot of paranormal experiences can be disproved rather easily. Unless there is another person to back the claim up, or if there is physical evidence, I don't believe it.
ok my favorite subject (rubs hands together excitedly) Do i believe in Ghosts yeppers you bet ya. why seen one hope i never see anouther...scariest thing i ever saw. Almost made me pee myself and im a cop mind you. Since then done a lot of research on the subject Footprints of souls are not the same thing as Ghosts..... Footprints are like phenomina that keeps repeating itself. like the piano player at the hotel in colorado that has been seen a hundred times and photographed at least as many. A ghost is an enity of some kind or energy that can manifest itself in measurable ways even though the measuring devices can be called into question yet it seams to hold true at multiple locations. things like evps energy drain motion sensors other things can detect something there but it is always open to interpretation unless you yourself experience it. I usually dont tell my ghost story do to the fact few believe in ghosts and those who do dont need convincing and those who dont can never be convinced until it happens to them. i was once a doubter ive been cured of that...

I'm a fully fledged professional scientist. Ph.D and calle Professor. (sadly not Prof Cindy)
I amd a very hard nosed scientist. I'm and editor for top journals; Including one with an impact factor of 12.
I was stone cold sober, I wasn't tired, I was alone and feeling really good. I was "baby sitting" a friends house. I watched the ties on the curtain undo themselves. They then retied themselves with an opposite knot. I wasn't scared, didn't feel threatened.
When I told the people who owned the house, nervously BTW. He & she said, happens all the time. We know the spirit has been, by checking the curtains in the morning. We never tell anyone so that we don't look like idiots.
Strange.
I've never explained it; could have been a trick but I don't know why. I didn't tell anyone until now; 15years later.
Strange place
Then again it made me :embarrassed: >:-)

Theaters are places of dreams made and broken and so would seem a natural for such things. Though no one has ever spoken of a ghost at the Fillmore (where you would expect one) many people (who work at both) have had experience at the Warfield. I've never seen it, but the people who tell me they have are otherwise pretty level-headed types.
First, down in the basement, during the 1920s there was a speakeasy. Big one. And I know people who have felt something vague 'reach out and touch them' or 'brush up against them' when they have walked through there.
I know of at least 3 people who claim to have seen the following also. They were walking across the stage, and out of the corner of their eye they see someone sitting way high up in the balcony house right. Its a man, in kind of a 1930s (the Warfield was built in 1922) trenchcoat and fedora and he is smoking. Now they only see it out of the corner of their eye, and so they turn to see it and he is gone, but the cigarette smoke is still hanging in the air. One of them went up there and and they insist they smelled cigarette smoke when they got there (its a good 90 sec. to to minutes to get from the stage up there) and since there has not been indoor smoking in Cali for well over a decade now, its pretty distinctive.
But not knowing what it is does not make it supernatural, it only makes it something we don't yet know or can not yet explain. Might well be a very natural deal at that.
that is a good example of a foot print cindy the family is aware of it do to the fact it keeps repeating itself paranormal investigators believe this is memory imprint of a person who use to live in the house. perhaps the owner liked his/her curtains tied a certain way a history check may reveal who that person was but not likely as this is a mundane act unless someone still living remembers them being this fastidious im interested though as a scientist is their anyway to measure this kind of activity the amount of energy or force that would be required to unti and retie a curtain strap. What could be the source of power or energy to manipulate it? 100 doallar questions right... the one i say was a partial body apperition of a woman and child and it drained the energy from my scout car..???
jessica
Interesting observation jesse and very valid. I may have a few questions for the physics dept tomorrow.
Very interesting, energy cannot be created or destroyed. So where did the energy come from? I didn't feel changed in anyway, I wasn't tired, or at least no more than usual. I totally guessing but I sort of think in the 10-20 joules or less? But to me there was no ghostly specter, just happening. WHICH needed energy as you point out.
Hate this sort of conversation but love it as well. Where does energy go? We have galaxys moving at the speed of light; where does the energy come from? I know the physics but ?
BTW Jesse you want to pm?
Cindy
love to
Sorry Einstein just called in
E=mc^2
That is where the energy comes from. Obviously m = c^2/m so m is very small and energy very large., so there is a lot of energy. This is obvious from the first equation BTW, had too much happy juice yet again. Since there is more energy than matter can energy exist alone? Ghosts?
Sorry
Cindy
Where does the flame of a candle go when it goes out?
We're just getting (thanks to Hubble and Chandra) a glimpse at the totality of the universe, and how much farkin' bigger it is then we ever even began to imagine. Mindblowing stuff. And its kind of funny, outside of some NASA junkies and scientists interested in such stuff most of the people really don't know about it. The implications to all of our physics, our astrophysics, not to mention religion, are pretty much being ignored outside of the few.
But the event horizon expanded by billions and billions times billions. And slowly that is going to seep in.
I believe in ghosts, spiritual beings and parallel universes... and I believe that one day it will all be explained by science (or an evolution of what we call science). I don't believe anything is supernatural, just waiting to be explained.
an evolution of what we call science
What we call science is always evolving because more than anything else, science is a system for questioning. That gives it a place to grow.
Although I am a scientist and have never seen a ghost, I believe in it including life after death and reincarnation.
I think a best material explaining ghotst and life after death is the movie, Ghost: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099653/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099653/)
I was surprised at how a hollywood movie could depict exactly what I have learned on ghosts in my country, a remote asian country rooted in shamanism.
Barbie~~
I have to say that I believe.
Coming from a Native American culture- what people interpret metaphysical or otherworldly phenomena- is an fact intertwined in everyday life. It's a different look at the things we call ghosts. I'm certainly no expert on the matter but have seen and heard some pretty wacky things. This is a huge universe and everything that lives in it has a voice and way of expressing itself it seems.
at the risk of ridicule from teckla lol i'll tell my story... i was on patrol in northern part of denver county along 104th ave were the city suddenly becomes country and goes into a definable rural area. it was 0200 am and as i was driving this road ( by the way its known for several fatal car crashes from street racers and drifting a problem i blame whole heartily on the movie fast and the furious.) any rates along this road i noticed a heavy fog i was approaching rolling across the roadway. it was dense enough that neither my low beams or spot could penitrate it so i slowed the scout car down considerable and thats when i saw two people half concealed in the fog a woman and a child. they appeared wet and as their is a pond on both sides of the road at this location i assumed a wreck had occured. their appearence was so sudden that i had to brake hard they didnt even appear to notice me so i undid my seat belt and opened the car door only to have my headlights and spot go imeadiately dead my radio started to pick up alot of static at this oint as well. i turned my flashlight nto the two only to see that they had vanished it was the longest wait for anouther car in my entire life

Actually that is very close the kind of thing that the people at the Warfiled see. The phantom kind of event imprinting. So, your job, since you have access to records and such is to see if such an accident happened there with victims that match what you saw.
Three days ago my wife went to the garage to get something from there. When she went down the steps she knocked over a plunger and it fell to the floor. When she returned it was standing on the bottom step. When we lived at our previous house we used to get glimpses of someone turning a corner ahead of us but when we turned the same corner no one would ever be there. My son, who was very young at the time, would tell us all the time of his 'playmate' and wanted to know who he was. Nothing happened that was really scary but it was a bit unnerving.
It truly is a very big universe full of things we can't explain. I was a skeptic about UFOs until I actually saw one and one of my friends also saw it. I can't say who or what was flying the craft but it performed manuvers that no conventional aircraft could ever do then it just disappeared into the sky.
I believe in them too having seen a few things.
One morning as I woke up I saw a woman sitting in a chair at the foot of my bed. I nearly jumped out of bed fumbling for the light to get a better look. Then she and the chair were gone.
On another occasion I was lying on a couch watching the fire in a fireplace at a vacation house. Suddenly, there was this angry face floating in the air above me. My wife saw it too. Then it vanished.
On another occasion, I was at long term airport parking in SF checking my car to see that I hadn't forgotten anything. I forgot about the time and was being obsessive when a man wearing army jacket came out of nowhere and ran by me towards the bus stop. It was the last bus before my flight so if I missed it, I missed my flight and it was critical that I made that flight as it was a family emergency. I realized that I was about to miss the bus and ran after the man towards the bus but when I got on, he was not on the bus or anywhere to be seen. I was the only passenger.
We had a shower stall in one of the places we rented with only a curtain. My wife was showering and lost her balance. She fell backwards against the curtain and of course would have fallen on the sink or toilet but she felt a pair of hands from behind the curtain push her back into the shower stall. It wasn't me and we were alone in the house. She looked all around in the bathroom for the person who saved her but no one was there.
This stuff and dreams that have some prophetic content fascinate me. I wrote my new novel with this material as a recurring theme. I hope to have it published in January.

ive thought about doing that it makes my skin crawl thinking about it what if their still in the pond and noone knows it...not likely... but possible i dont know how deep the water is on either side of the road. i will do some checking and let you all know tomarrow when i get to work, id be interested to know how something dead could imprint itself or manipulate energy like that to even manifest an imprint im not as smart as some of the people on here so no clue on that at all
jessica
Perhaps its like an echo, or they way you see something after a bright flash.
I remember once whenI was around nine or ten, I was in a friends house that was apparently haunted to some degree. That night While I was laying in bed my pillow was pulled out from under my head, and no one else was in the room. After that I curled up in the blankets and didn't get any sleep.
But I can't say I believe in ghosts. I think it may be possible for some sort of force to accumulate in an area due to a long-time prescence of people. For example, the same feeling I get in a house that is supposedly haunted, i get when I'm in high people-traffic places when the're empty. Like a mall that is closing...especially if the lights are out...maybe light enterfears with the force... :-\
okies update on possible accident related to my ghost story i went back 5 years in vehicle accident records resulting in fatalities in that location i found two that could be implicated both involved a woman and a female child both were the results of head on collisions where the victims cars ended up in the pond so maybe this is just an imprint somehow.... weird if you ask me

Quote from: Heather RoseA believer can make a ghost but a ghost WILL make a believer.
When I was a child I was saved from drowning by someone who disappeared when I turned away.
In the kitchen of a restaurant that I used to work at, I followed someone (a few seconds behind them) into the walk-in cooler. When I walked in, there was no one there. Then, an order slip that I needed, to be able to fill an order, went missing. After I looked for it for a good fifteen minutes, I just stood there frustrated and as if someone dropped it from above my head, the order slip floated down in front of my face. I told my supervisor and a few of my co-worker about my experiences and they looked at me as if I had just confirmed that I was out of my mind. A few days later, I walked into the dry storage room. One the people that I had told was standing there staring at a box laying on the floor, her (native american) face was as white as a sheet. I asked her what was wrong, she said, "You're right, this place is haunted, that box just pulled itself off of the shelf and dropped to the floor."
So, yes I believe that there are "ghosts". There are all kinds things that exist, that we can not explain because of our fleshly perspective. I believe that there are several types of hauntings, among them: 1) Intelligent and interactive, such as what I described with the order slip and 2) historical imprinting (the same scenario repeating itself over and over) such as some have described, in places that have experienced great emotional energy, such as major battlefields.
I don't know about weird, so many people tend to have some sort of similar experiences in some ways that it tends to be a universal. And, again, just because we can't explain it, does not make it supernatural, it may well be very natural and we just can't explain it yet.
But way out on the far fringes of science, a strange fallout from the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principal is that perhaps our thoughts have an energy, that our thoughts can change things, that our thoughts are a form of energy itself and as such represent the missing dimension in the universe.
I agree completely. Thoughts are our very essence, without our thoughts we are just a pile of chemicals.
Actually, our thoughts are just an electro-chemical reaction. But then again, so is a nuclear explosion.
I believe the electro-chemical reaction is the strings that my thoughts/spirit/soul pull to animate this pile of chemicals.

OK, I'll share one of my 'stories'...
I was 'haunted' by my grandmother for a few weeks. I never met her as she lived and died overseas just after I was born. I felt a presence around me and when I meditated on it I realised it was her, which seemed odd since I didn't know her but there you go. Well, a number of things happened but I'll describe the event that removed all doubt from my mind.
After a few weeks of her hanging around and me trying to figure out what she wanted, I got a bit fed up. So I decided to go to this meditation circle run by a professional psychic which I had gone to before, but not in a while. I had a little conversation with her before I went explaining that I didn't know what she wanted and if she had a particular message for me she could let me know while I was meditating at this group or she could give the message to the psychic and he could pass it on to me.
So I went along and it turned out to be a really big circle - around 30 people, which was huge. I recognised some of the people from before but I did not know any of them outside of the group and had told no one what I was there for. So the guided meditation began and as it progressed I felt her presence grow stronger and stronger. At one point I felt a pressure at the back of my neck and I felt like she was trying to enter my body but I resisted. Actually it freaked me out a bit so I came out of the meditation and just sat there with my eyes closed. When the meditation ended and everyone was beginning to open their eyes, I felt her standing behind my right shoulder and stroking my arm! I just sat there frozen and the psychic who was sitting directly opposite me in the circle looked directly over my right shoulder, then looked at me and asked, "who's that woman standing behind you?" . My mouth dropped open, speechless, and he chuckled and told me not to worry as I had nothing to be afraid of, then turned his attentiont to someone else.
Well I never got a message and couldn't talk to him because there were so many people there wanting to ask him things, but that experience assured me that I wasn't mad - she was really there. In the end I told her she had her chance and I really didn't know what else to do for her, so I asked her if she could leave because I was uncomfortable with her being there. She hung around in the distance for a few days and was completely gone after a week.
i dont beleive in ghosts, but i do think there are such things as demons, and that demons can pretend to be a ghost.

Why or why not?
Do you think so-called 'hauntings' can be explained by some other phenomena? Or are they 'imprints' of souls departed?
I don't believe in ghosts, but I think they exist. Why? Because of personal experiences that I have never been able to explain by science or some similar reasonings. I don't expect people to believe my experiences because I have no proof of them, but they were enough to convince me.
I think some hauntings can be explained away such as high EMFs or the wind or a house or some sort of mental problem. And others I think can be caused by a wide variety of things such as people who have died but can't pass on or demons or some sort of non-physical bodied entity.
I believe firmly in spirits, I'm senitive to them, I can sense their presence, tell what gender they are, sometimes I can hear them as well as see them at times. I've had this gift since my early childhood. I've been touched by them phsyicaly as well as been harmed by them a few times. I know wiether the ones I'm sensing are good or bad. I have so much exp with them it isn't funny and at times I hate my gift but I guess it's better than my ability to sense death or dying. I would tell you some of my exps but idk.
Yes. I've had my share of paranormal experiences. I grew up in a haunted house, although my family doesn't believe in ghosts so they didn't have any experiences with it and just blamed me for everything unusual. I've also done what ghost hunting I can as an adult, without having access to haunted places like if I were in one of the big time investigation teams. So I've seen and heard a few things.
Kia Ora,
I read this on the back of a book, I can't remember the book title nor the author, but it did leave an impression [excuse the pun]on my mind...
" A ghost is merely the mist left upon the warm mirror of the present by the chilled breath of the past!"
Metta Zenda :)
Absolutely. I grew up in a house where the furniture moved by itself on a regular basis. When I was 10, we moved to my dad's place of work, which is a funeral home. I literally grew up surrounded by weird events, seeing people that weren't there, hearing things I couldn't place so it doesn't really scare me. It's as much a part of my childhood (and life, even now) as my grandma's cooking.
One of the most interesting stories, to me, is once when I was about 11 I was walking down the hall to the living room, passed the door that led to downstairs and saw this old, very tall man walking by. He stopped, looked at me and smiled a bit, and then just kinda...poofed.
About two months later, I was in the basement with my dad going through the previous owner's stuff, saw a photo and said "That's the man I saw!" My dad goes "Where, in the other pictures?" and I told him "No, downstairs. He smiled at me." Freaked my dad the hell out, lol.
I'm actually, dorky as it is, huge into doing EVPs and half-assed ghost hunting nowadays. A group of friends and I like to hit a local cemetery as much as we can, we've gotten some incredible stuff over there. That, and my basement. Eesh...my basement. There's a little girl at that cemetery that's taken a serious liking to my boyfriend. She'll only talk if he's around, and on the recordings she always sounds so happy when he shows up, and once we caught what definitely sounds like crying as we left. It's kind of heartbreaking, hearing this poor kid who's been dead since the 1900's, but at the same time I'm glad we go there, so at least she's got someone to visit. We're going to buy her flowers once we've got the money.
Actually, if anyone's interested, I can link to our youtube. Our EVPs aren't phenomenal, but I think some of them are pretty damn good.
I did in home care work for elderly folks for about a year... There was always weird stuff happening at this one place... I finally got up the nerve to ask if the elderly couple if they had noticed anything strange going on... They laughed a bit and then answered...
"Yeah, that's the ghosts, they're always playing about... We're use to it, don't let it bother you"
I'll admit to my somewhat conspiracy theoryish belief that our reality doesn't quite exist the way we see it. It seems like we have a lot more possible evidence of our universe not physically existing than we do of people having souls or spirits. I do not believe that ghosts exist as a remnant of us or our souls continuing on. Instead, I can imagine that whatever creates our reality essentially recalls data or (I have to say it) has a glitch in the matrix.
Kia Ora,
::) Ghosts...What if ghosts are just residual energies/consciousnesses , where only those with finely turned ESP can tune into this energy forces and when doing so, the residual consciousness take on the shape that the receiving mind is capable of understanding/comprehending....
::)Weird theory I know...But hey I'm somewhat weird anyway... ;)
Form is emptiness-Emptiness is form...After all... It's all in the mind
