Title: ...Masks
Post by: Carolyn on December 15, 2009, 04:19:16 AM
People make me sick...
Everyone wears a mask at some point or another in there life, most of them never remove it...
We wear them for all sorts of differnet reasons, and the only time we take them off is when we are alone, but even then some of us don't. Why? Why do people do such a foolish thing? Why aren't people more honest not only with themselves but everyone around them, Destroy the masks Once and for all. I have.

Here is everything anyone would need to know about me.

1/Atheist/Angonstic/Buddist (I want to see ALL religion wiped off the face of this world)
2/TRUE Gamer
3/Pro Choice
4/Independent
5/REAL Libreal
6/Bitch in the highest Calibar
7/Hypocrite
8/Martal Artist (Ninjutsu, Jujustsu, Kendo, <just started> Kunoichjutsu)
9/Cook at KFC
10/Aurtor in the works (Book yet to be pubished)
11/Anime Fan but not an Otaku
12/Dog Lover
13/Scientist
14/Greedy
15/Kind hearted
16/Blunt
17/Honest

Now why can't the rest of the world be more honest like this? I mean it's not that hard to do. Just destroy your mask

for one thing masks are what peopel use to protect themselfs from the world masks often are used to inspire fear to inspire faith and to inspire confidence for instance the fire fighter who puts on a mask of bravery when he enters a burning building when every fiber of his being is screaming run away. Only a fool would enter a building in flames without fear. How confident would we be in our heros if they were a quivering mess on the floor. in our doctors who looked at a mangled mess from a car wreck and exclaimed f... she's dog food. i think the kind of masks your refering to though re the ones that deal with bigotry and hatred and those may not be masks. They may infact be their true nature shining threw. A mask would conceal that until you were at your lowest or weakest then it would be revealed their true selfs and take advantage of the vunerability.

What we perceive as "masks" may not be so.
I mean, are you a "true gamer" while you cook at KFC?.. Who we are is made up of the many facets of our identity and we pick and choose which ones we point outwards into every human interaction.
I could write a 50-60 point list off the top of my list of the many little things that I am, but On This Forum, only maybe half of them apply.
I'm not "child" to anyone here, I am in interaction with my mother. I'm not "mother" here either, though I am to my daughter. I'm not "emotional wreck" at the same time as I'm "calm & rational" for sake of moderation duties. I'm not an excellent cook while I'm at work. And I'm not spiritual in conversation with my English teacher.
None of these things are masks. They're all parts of my identity.
And not projecting these things isn't masks either, because even if these are parts of me, they aren't all of me, and they aren't always relevant.

There's a time and place for everything.

Every one of those things looks like a mask to me. It's not stupid, it's a very effective survival mechanism. From the shape of your past it looks like you've constructed some good ones too. I suggest peeling back some more layers, Princess Fiona.

You are Caroyln, that list is not the definition of Caroyln but just a line of stuff. Youre on to something, so please keep going.

Like Min said we put on 'masks' depending on the situation that they are in.  A child wants to see their parent.  A parent wishes to see their child.  A patient .... a confident Doctor.  An employer ... a competent employee.  A lover ... a happy mate.

To rip away the 'masks' we have is to lay bear our most intimate fears and insecurities.  We use our 'masks' to hide behind and protect ourselves.

Blessed Be
Janet

Actually, I didn't say that hun. I said that a lot of what we call "masks" is merely selecting which aspects of ourselves we show.

Our masks are "us".

Just those parts of us that apply to the situation.

My layers are cake not onion, just so ya know.

I think we all wear masks as protective devices not as a way to lie or deceive necessarily. I think this is a natural thing and as long as they are used properly, they have a place.

when exactly is it exceptable to wear a mask? They don't have a place in my mind, an example is as follows: You first meet someone, and you don't like them judgeing from not only from what you have heard about them or from what you may or may not have seen them do prior to meeting them face to face, are you going to put on a facade and pretend to like them for the sake of those around you, or are you going to be conmplely honest and tell them you don't like them right then and there.

Weird!  I just replied to your other post and mentioned wearing masks. :)

I think this song very relevant to the difficulty in living with out masks :

Policy of Truth by Depeche Mode

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPFE64p78_k# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPFE64p78_k#)

QuoteYou had something to hide
Should have hidden it, shouldn't you
Now you're not satisfied
With what you're being put through

It's just time to pay the price
For not listening to advice
And deciding in your youth
On the policy of truth

Things could be so different now
It used to be so civilized
You will always wonder how
It could have been if you'd only lied

It's too late to change events
It's time to face the consequence
For delivering the proof
In the policy of truth

Never again
Is what you swore
The time before
Never again
Is what you swore
The time before

Now you're standing there tongue tied
You'd better learn your lesson well
Hide what you have to hide
And tell what you have to tell
You'll see your problems multiplied
If you continually decide
To faithfully pursue
The policy of truth

Never again
Is what you swore
The time before

Living a life of Truth is not an easy one!  :'(

Yes! It's not a fascade, it's called being polite and that's what makes society work. You don't have to date them or hang out with them, but yeah, if you want to function in the world ya hafta put up with the occasional douchebag. The whole idea behind civilization is a reasonable set of responses to each other that makes herd life somewhat predictable. When we meet someone unsavory, we don't shoot them, beat them up, or call them names, that's just  how it is.

There is no mask, you simply have one personality.

Human personalities are very contradictory, and different facets show themselves at different times. For example, a good parent loves their kid right? But what if their kid disobeys? They must be punished sternly. Now where's that loving side? Not showing, the serious side is. The serious side isn't showing when you talk to people about your feelings though.

It's a sign of a healthy personality, the ability to behave properly as situations call for it.

Also, things like your job. If you get fired from KFC, has your personality changed? Not really, you're still the same person. So lists like that wouldn't apply unless we only did what we wanted all the time. In addition, we'd have to know what we wanted and many do not.

Living a life of Truth is not an easy one!

Especially if you are in Depeche Mode where your mask is your life, at least your performance, which is what most people see of you.

Yes, people wear masks.  I fail to see the harm in holding back a bit so you don't get burnt too badly.

That and, why would you assume everyone on the planet wants to know all about you?  I couldn't possibly know everything about everyone I've met, so people introduce themselves, little by little.

Besides, it's more fun to learn a little bit over time, if you put it all out there at once then what's left?
