My boyfriend was supposed to be starting testosterone in late february but just got the news yesterday that his appointment was bumped up to the beginning of january, which is fantastic! To celebrate he is going to have a 'T' Party. Obviously I want to be the greatest girlfriend in the history of girlfriends and get him the best gift ever. I was going to buy him a really nice shaving kit because I know how much he's looking forward to that but I found out that is the gift that his best friend is already getting him. Darn it. I think it was the perfect gift too but obviously so did his buddy. Grrrr.
Okay so here is the thing guys; I need your help to come up with a super-awesome-even-better-than-a-nice-shaving-kit-he's-my-best-buddy-but-this-is-the-reason-I-sleep-with-you gift. So what would you like to get even more than a shaving kit on such a seminal occasion?
Thanks
~Wendy
hummm....depends on how much you want to spend.
Personally,I would be happy if my g/f gave me a nice masculine watch...that's just me....BUT I'll be happy with anything she gives me :)
Sleep with him.
A tie. Heh.
You want something specifically male-oriented? Would something transman-related work? New binder, packy, something like that?
Leather Dopp kit, if he does any traveling at all--it's nice to have one, just in case, and it's very manly. You can even stock it up for him if you want to. Or he can take it to work or keep it in his trunk for emergencies.
Men's manicure set. They're different from women's.
A nice, full-sized, pushbutton black umbrella. Kind of a joke there--we always talk about the trans umbrella; now you can give him one. But by all rights a REAL trans umbrella should probably be multicolored, rainbow-colored.
Perhaps a book or leaflet or some such with different patterns of beards? A tape recorder or whatever recorder to record his changing voice. a combination of these things. a second shave kit for travel, a camera to to pics as he goes through the changes, huggles to go with one of those, after shave in your fave scent, any combination of these suggestions.
Ok I don't figure out gifts well either. The tie idea isn't all bad BTW.
Any guy gift. Doesn't have to be related to T or transition.
Or think of something he has ie suitcase, backpack or some such item that might be 'girly' and replace it with a masculine version. Some guys (like me) had lots of women-type stuff before figuring out the trans thing (ie didn't already have guy stuff).

Wow, that's interesting. I was going to suggest this, and then I thought about what might need substituting. I used myself as an example...wallet? Nah, I've carried a men's wallet since I was a kid. Address book? Nah, I've had a plain black address book since forever, and most people don't use them anymore anyway. And so on. So I figured most guys would be like me. Duh.

Yep, we're all different! Some things I owned were clearly neutral, but other things ie canvas bags for lugging junk to the car were more 'feminine' colors ie bright yellow, turquoise, etc rather than plain or navy, for example. A wallet was the first thing I bought then ditched the purse. Then got a briefcase (nylon) for lugging crap to work with.

Heh, you could always just go with it and be a true flamer. Who says straight guys can't enjoy turquoise? Why do men get stuck with conservative colors like black and navy and gray? I mean, I love navy and black and gray, but not every guy does.
And it also didn't occur to me till later that some guys might have items that were gifts from family/friends who just insisted on flower or butterfly motifs...which might be galling to carry pre-transition but would look downright weird during or well into transition. Although Toshiro Mifune used to look completely male and intimidating in a flower-motif kimono.
Of course, he had a Texas-size pigsticker to back it up with.
A Leatherman Wave. They kick ass.

Whoa. I took one look at it and immediately thought, "Is it safe?" I think I'll stick with my Swiss Army knife!
They've got big honking blades on 'em but they're lock blades so I dunno ... safe enough I guess.
The Swiss Army Knife "super tinker" is a good one too, those are $20 at wal-mart and I think the most useful model.
when starting T, the thing that a lot of guys will appreciate... a membership to a good porn site.
you probably dont have to go expensive, a bunch of cute things would work. maybe a basket of things like a little ruler to measure facial hairs and... other things. and the voice recorder idea. and a couple of kinds of teas. :P
Thanks guys! I'm still not sure exactly what I am going to get him but you have given me a lot of great ideas here. :)
A leatherman tool is good, got lots of neat things in it.
A new leather Wallet Monogramed, they last forever
Anything Male works. jus try to find something that will last them a long time.
IMHO cologne and body wash only last so long that is why I suggest long term items as I mentioned.

Oops, sorry, I'm a little cryptic, I guess. I was referring to a sequence in
Marathon Man that makes my skin crawl...Olivier keeps repeating the line I quoted.

Mifune Toshiro reference FTW! ;D
In all seriousness, guys wore flower patterns all the time in feudal Japan. It was usually a reference to their family crest or heritage.
