For the last six years, Holyoke Community College (HCC) has included gender identity and expression
in its nondiscrimination policy in an attempt to make the campus safe and accepting for transgender students.

However, during a recent review of its affirmative action/nondiscrimination policy, the college decided to remove the language at the advice of its legal counsel, citing it did not have the authority to add groups of individuals that are not currently protected under state law.
