Title: Want to feel old?
Post by: tekla on January 12, 2010, 01:47:14 PM
41 years ago today Led Zeppelin released Led Zeppelin I.

By the way, it got a lot of bad reviews when released, including a right panning from Rolling Stone, who later had to eat crow and list it as the 29th greatest record in Rock and Roll.

Here they are, a few years older, doing Dazed and Confused.  Not too bad, but if you ever come over to my house I'll play you the 28 minute live version from their first performance in SF at the Fillmore. That'll rock the block.

Yeah, I'm younger then the band, sad though I think a lot of that stuff is going to be close to immortal, and alas, I'm not.

Yesterday I was reading an article in Golf Magazine about Alice Cooper, now 62.  He commented on how crazy it is that he and Lou Reed now talk golf.  He said in 1970 Lou Reed was the least likely guy on the planet to play golf.  "He never saw daylight!"

I remember when Alice was rising in popularity and thought of by most parents as a horrific example why rock was bad for kids.

And I won't even go into detail about watching the first super bowl, when I was in high school.

But you know what?  My kids thanked me for introducing them to rock, the way it was back in the '70's.  They only got to hear it but at least they heard it on the original vinyl.  We lived it and that's something no one can take away from us.

Great album even though I am half the age of it... but that doesn't matter. Had to put it on now after seeing that today is the anniversary of its release! If I remember correctly from seeing it somewhere didn't rolling stone also give not so good reviews for the release of DSOTM as well?? I'll have to look it up.

With its technological mastery and its conventional wisdom once-removed, this is a kitsch masterpiece -- taken too seriously by definition, but not without charm. It may sell on sheer aural sensationalism, but the studio effects do transmute David Gilmour's guitar solos into something more than they were when he played them. Its taped speech fragments may be old hat, but for once they cohere musically. And if its pessimism is received, that doesn't make the ideas untrue -- there are even times, especially when Dick Parry's saxophone undercuts the electronic pomp, when this record brings its cliches to life, which is what pop is supposed to do, even the kind with delusions of grandeur. B

- Robert Christgau, Christgau's Record Guide, 1981.

And though I like it, and don't feel Christgau's angst about it, I don't think it - or any of what followed, was near as good as Meddle, Obscured By Clouds, or Ummagumma (at least the live half, the other record is good for target practice, and not much more).

Yeah Meddle is my favorite for sure!! I also think Obscured by Clouds is very underrated probably because it was made for a film, there are some great tracks on it. But I like all eras of Pink Floyd in their own way but least of all AMLOR.  I was also wrong Rolling Stone didn't pan Darkside on its release.

Do you like the experimental studio side of Ummagumma or more so the live side? I find both interesting and I can always throw Grantchester Meadows on and receive serenity from it.

... I also found it funny that as I opened this thread I was downloading that Robert PLant and Allison Krause (sp?) album, I don't know why but I still haven't listened to it!!!

Nah, the studio LP of that set is what I was calling target practice.  I keep the live CD out, and the studio one is buried deep in the closet somewhere, and with god's grace I'll never find it again.  But the live stuff is just awesome.  Although, to be fair, Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict is a nuclear weapon in Charades if no one knows that record.

I don't really want to feel old, but when I have a conversation like this I can't help but realize that I don't connect to today's youth:

Me: The Man with No Name Trilogy rocks.
Kid: What's that?
Me: It's a series of western movies directed by Sergio Leone.
Kid: Who's Sergio Leone?
Me: A very well known director. He did this series with Clint Eastwood.
Kid: Who's Clint Eastwood?
Me: *loses faith in humanity*

Most of the people I know, 20somethings, know those movies, but they are industry kids.  We were having a long conversation about Ennio Morricone the other night and they seems very knowledgeable.  But as good as the trilogy is/was, I still love Once Upon a Time in the West, Henry Fonda as a psychopathic cold-blooded killer is delicious.

The boy(about 12) across the street came over one day telling me about this cool new album he had. He thought I would like it since sounded like some of the music I listened to. I looked down at the disc and it was Dark Side of the Moon. At least he was right about it being cool  ;D. I told him it wasn't really a new album and he said " I know, it's been out a couple of months". So I listened to it and told him that he was right. It is a cool album. Didn't have the heart to tell him I had vinyl copies 30 years old from when I found this cool new album. :D

How about a 78?!  I had a couple of those.  Caruso, if i recall.

How about this:
I remember when the hand-held calculator broke the $100 barrier.  It could add, subtract, multiply and divide.  No memory.  And the LED's lasted a full 2 hours on a single charge!

I remember programming a computer using punch cards.  The computer was the size of my demonstration table in the front of my classroom - and this was considered a small computer.

I remember Gordo Cooper's Mercury/Atlas flight.

Me too, I bought one for my dad for Xmas that year.  God I thought I was so cool for doing that.  When I went though his stuff after he died, he still had it, and the battery's were still fresh cause he kept on using it.  Made me cry.

I remember watching the "Live" Elvis censured show on Ed Sullivan, camera didn't show anything from the waist down.  :o

OK foot in mouth, I was only 8 at the time:
QuoteElvis mythology states that Sullivan censored Presley by only shooting him from the waist up. Sullivan may have helped create the myth when he told TV Guide, "as for his gyrations, the whole thing can be controlled with camera shots." In truth Presley's whole body was shown in the first and second shows.

now you can order Adult Pay-Per-View on cable  :o

lol!  I still use my slide rule in my classroom.  My students are fascinated by it.

I make sure to use it by the window so I can get the solar cells to power it.  Oh, wait a second...  I live in western NY!  There is no sun!  It's only a mythological object - a story passed on by people who come from out of state.  (whatever 'out of state' means...)

Well, we have very nice cliffs that we can watch from.

And you could not find a better bit of coastline to watch that from.  These are from where I'll most likely wind up.

Yeah, I figure that comin' in at 45 feet they are going to do a lot of damage, but the harbor at Bodega is protected, so the boats ought to be fine.  But since this is Cali, and crazy is a national sport here, I'm guessing that some fool is going to go down to the beach, or think they can surf it or something.

The Coast Guard at Bodega Bay will have two full crews on duty next week for its two 47-foot, motor lifeboats, along with its most experienced drivers certified for big surf, said Chief Petty Officer Erik Watson.

The boats are rated for 20-foot surf and 30-foot swells, conditions that will get the adrenaline going, Watson said.

"It always does," Watson said. "There is a little bit of uneasiness and higher awareness. If we do go out there, it will be a challenge if we are out in extreme conditions. But that is our job, what we are trained to do."

If the seas are any bigger, Watson said the Coast Guard will have to rely on helicopters and C-130 Hercules planes for rescues.

Kat,

As ever one of the saddest and most admirable human attributes go together. The fools who go out, and are not big wave experts. And the very brave and committed heroes who go out to save them.

I've always admired the lifeboat service. Coming from Liverpool UK, these incredible human beings would go out in the face of hell; in my youth, with oars and guts in an open boat, to rescue a ships crew.

They are no less heroes in the modern 'unsinkable' boats and engines. It still takes outstanding courage and humanity to do what they do. As is the case in many many emergency service crews.

Enjoy the view and take some pics, the biggest waves I have surfed were about 10 foot. Seemed like monsters. The force of a 20-45 ft must be incredible. I think I'll need to put a fin on the Lilo.  I vividly remember sail boarding (which I was very good at) and having a freak shore break hit me. Trapped under a sail in six inches of water. No way I could lift a 30 sq ft sail with water over it off my back. I started to drown, so easy to happen. I was pulled out by other surfers. I would have drowned if by myself.

Yuk Bad memories

Cindy

Yeah, even in 'unsinkable' boats (and if you looked at that coastline, if you got the most unsinkable boat ever up against those rocks in seas like that the thousand pieces it winds up in might not sink, but...) what amazes me is the guys who will jump off of them and into the water.

People who are not used to the ocean don't know the power of even a five foot wave, we were out watching 12 footers roll in the other day and it was the power and the glory.  45 feet, is going to be like the hand of god smacking the cliffs.  We will be feeling the earth move under our feet.

Seemingly unrelated, but perfectly on topic I can highly suggest the book:
Young Men and Fire by Norman Maclean, which is the story of the kids (and at my age, they are kids, early 20s, no more) who jump out of airplanes and into the huge raging forest fires out West.  Pretty much like the lifeguards and Coast Guard guys.  And the running essay within the book about how such huge fires (and I know you get them in Aussieland too) behave is some damn fine science writing.

I'll do my best, it's going to be (obviously) pouring rain and very windy.  Last time something like this happened it was in conjunction with the highest recorded tidal levels and that was going to happen at like 2am, we went out to one of the favorite spots (Land's End/Sutro Baths) figuring how many morons like us could there be?  There were hundreds of people out there.  This will be in daytime, I I bet there will be a lot of people to keep me company.

I've single handed a 45 footer in 12 foot seas and 25-30 knot winds (Lake Michigan).  It's something when you're standing on deck with five foot of freeboard and can't see over the waves.  But 45' waves?  No thanks!  I have no idea how those guys do it.  You'd think somewhere in their heads they'd be thinking about the people who they are sent out to save, "If they are stupid enough to go out in that, they deserve what they get."

They downgraded them to 25-30, but at that there is a ton of beach erosion, and we're going to lose that Pacifica apartment building at long last.
