Title: Transgender expressions
Post by: V M on January 17, 2010, 01:05:29 AM
What I'm wondering is why do M2Fs seem to think they have to be all smiley to look fem. and F2Ms seem to think they have to be all scowley or expressionless to look masculine

Men smile too....Women are not always all happy a-- .....People are people and have a variety of emotions

What do you think when you see me?

I think everyone, male and female, looks better when they are smiling.

Marlon Brando?

Even Brando smiled on occasion, though I'm sure not often.

And then I realized... like I was shot... like I was shot with a diamond... a diamond bullet right through my forehead. And I thought, my God... the genius of that! The genius! The will to do that! Perfect, genuine, complete, crystalline, pure. And then I realized they were stronger than we, because they could stand that these were not monsters, these were men... trained cadres. These men who fought with their hearts, who had families, who had children, who were filled with love... but they had the strength... the strength... to do that. If I had ten divisions of those men, our troubles here would be over very quickly. You have to have men who are moral... and at the same time who are able to utilize their primordial instincts to kill without feeling... without passion... without judgment... without judgment! Because it's judgment that defeats us.

Anyone who never smiles, always looks like they a POd at the world.  For me at least, when I smile I look more feminine.  If I don't I look more like my Dad. ~shudders~

And I hate your lips, Virginia!  ;D Or maybe I just hate mine.  I wish they were fuller.

It looks like an everyday expression, the kind you'd have when walking or sleeping. Smiles are good but I feel like when I do it contorts my face to look less feminine which sucks as I really want to smile and give off an impression that I am at least willing to try and be happy and approachable :P
Expressing any form of emotion has always been an issue for me, mega repressed or something, but now I'm starting to feel it more it will sooner or later burst out to the surface and beyond, hopefully lol.
I sometimes feel it is ok to at least do a half smile a la katie holmes style without highlighting guy lines in my face.

Yup, that's what I look like on an average day. Particularly when I'm leaning over to click the computer mouse

I don't think it's like a feminine thing, I just think smiling conveys that you feel happy about life, and people just like to see you happy.  I went years without being able to smile.  I mean I could screw my lips up into a curve but my eyes belied my smiling lips and betrayed the sadness within.  I don't think it looks bad to look contemplative or anything.  I want you to be happy and love life and all of that so I just wish I saw more happiness in your eyes Virginia, you look like you are hanging out somewhere behind them.

I dunno how many hundreds of times I've been told I should smile more in my life, but I can say for sure it wasn't because any of those people wanted me to look more feminine.  ...lol.  Now it comes much easier to smile, and I'm glad.

The best part about smiling is that it drives people who don't like you bat-sh*t crazy.  It's a huge part of that 'living well is the best revenge' deal.

There does seem to be a stereotype floating around out there that women are supposed to smile and men aren't. But, eh, forget that. People should do what they're comfortable with and express themselves how they feel is right for them. Some people aren't big on smiling and others are.

I used to be a habitual scowler, but now I walk through life with a somewhat moronic grin.  :D It's been a nice change.

Funny thing... I feel like I pass a lot -better- when I'm smiling (or at least smirking).

Hi..

Oh dear if you try to define me as a male smilling or a female smileing then there must be some thing wrong with me .
so lets join the two to gether & you have what i was & still am the one who was /  is allways smileing.
Now i m not going to say that i am all the time . thats not the point .
I was happy as a kid . & happy most of the time . even when things were not allways  right .
Whats the word . or expression being,    having the sun shine in side does show out side . or through the person . as to how they are . & expresses that with a smile ,  :) :)

      ....noeleena...

I know for sure that when I'm feeling passable I'm feeling way more happy than at any other time. It's like I can't help but smile! When I'm forced into boy mode, I'm kind of broody and unhappy. Being a boy is such a... bore (no offense)  8)

I guess my smile maybe just reflects what I'm feeling inside?

I think I'd agree with you about the smile vs scowl (or at least less smiley). Part of it is that transgenders in either direction do what they can to fit the gender of choice, and consciously or not play out cultural stereotypes. I know for a fact that my mom was always telling my sister to smile and me to straighten my shoulders. Its socially programmed

Of course nobody has to feel obligated. I think in general I should smile more often, en femme or not.  cheers

Well in my case I worry that my eyebrows are too low and the smiling facial expression has them raised, thus I think that smiling dose help me pass abit better in my pictures. Then again I am alot happier when not posing as a male aswell so there is that.

Smile is a gift, smile is a charity, smile is happiness, I like smiling so much and I haven't thought other people like me or not, but give smile to others is my happiness.  :D :D :D

In fact, many people don't like me (because I'm TG), but I always keep smiling to them :D
