Title: Online petition for DSM-V
Post by: disdwarf on January 22, 2010, 11:39:14 PM
I found this online petition: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/2/objection-to-dsm-v-committee-members-on-gender-identity-disorders?page=184 (http://www.thepetitionsite.com/2/objection-to-dsm-v-committee-members-on-gender-identity-disorders?page=184)

To tell you the truth I don't know much about the case but I looked it up quickly and I'm afraid of what I see... reparative therapy to "cure" transsexual children, classifying  ->-bleeped-<- as a paraphilia, and pharmacological therapy for cross-dressers. I mean it's just wrong, cross-dressing is healthy, children should be free to be who they are, and those seeking transition shouldn't be labeled as paraphilic, right?

And I'm also thinking about this... why should transsexualism be listed in the DSM, which is the manual used by psychiatrists, and not in some other medical book (I don't know what they use for intersex people?). I tend to think of it more as intersexuality of the brain rather than a psychiatric disorder.
