It is almost midnight, and the dressing room at San Antonio's storied gay club the Saint on North Main Avenue is abuzz with chatter and preparation for its weekly drag show.

The room is a swirl of makeup and costumes. Everywhere, there is loud, vibrant color: on the performers' lips, painted across their eyes, in their wigs. There is tape — lots of it — as performers perched in high heels lift and squeeze themselves into low-cut or skin-tight outfits.

Among them sits Alexis Nicole Whitney, fumbling for a hair dryer she dropped on the floor. A friend applies makeup to Whitney's face and mounts a wig atop her head. When she needs bobby pins for the hairpiece, Whitney, 33, rummages through a large suitcase at her feet until she finds a plastic container. She shakes the box, listening for the tell-tale sound.
