Title: What to talk about (for a class)
Post by: Valerie Elizabeth on February 01, 2010, 02:13:26 AM
I'm guest speaking in a class (LGBT class) later today.  I know this is last minute, and I'm pretty confident about the class.  My goal isn't to put people to sleep though, and I feel that talking too much about me will do that.  I'm going to talk for probably 10 to 20 minutes, and then field questions.  Not that long, but something that needs a little prep work.

Can I get some ideas for topics to cover?  If you were in a class that was covering trans issues (and we're just starting with trans issues) what would you want to hear about?

Please let me know.

As part of a panel I've addressed college classes.
It was fun and informative.

I think that the main points that I'd try to cover:

Theory
Sex determination is based on:
Gender identity is immutable and unrelated to sexual orientation.
Gender identity dysphoria.
The umbrella of ->-bleeped-<-.
Causes: Mostly unknown.
Controversies: DSM, BBL, HBS.

Transitioning
WPATH SOC
Speed and order of steps a personal choice

Well, that covers the first few hours! >:-)
