Title: Dr. Oz show???
Post by: Mark on February 18, 2010, 05:44:51 AM
Last night my mom came into my room and told me that Dr Oz was having a show on transgenders. Idk anything about Dr. Oz or his show but if any of you guys wanted to jump in and watch it today I thought I would give you a heads up.

I appreciate that he took the time to clarify some things, but I was disappointed at how short the segment was.

I do think that Tyra definately did a good job with having the transgender topic. She has actually done a few episodes about it.

Didn't see it. I meant to... and then forgot about it  :-\ . I did listen to this story on NPR today though (for a gender class I'm taking). It was about 2 trans-girls, both about 6 years old. One of their families allowed transition, and the other.... went to *DUN DUN DUN* Dr. Zucker. My heart breaks for that little girl who's now denied everything from barbies to pastels.

WOW!
Poor Bradley. Lucky Jona! I am sure a lot here would feel jealousy for her

Yes my heart goes out for Bradley.  The story is nearly two years old and that will make Jona and Bradley around about 8 years of age.

It would be interesting to see what happened to the two girls.

What Dr Zucker did to Bradley was coercive therapy and near the end of the program her mum, realizes that Bradley was giving her stock answers, she was learning to keep things secret.  This was after months of treatment.

The actual radio program is also available and is slightly different in different places.

Kind regards
Sarah B

I hope so to, I have submitted a request for an update on the following program:

"Two Families Grapple with Sons' Gender Preferences Psychologists Take Radically Different Approaches in Therapy  by Alix Spiegel" from NPR (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=90247842)

The contents of the Email are:

"This story aired nearly two years ago.  Would it be possible to do an update on how Jona and Bradley are doing?
Your help in this matter would be very much appreciated, especially to the Transgendered community."

One can only hope that an update will be forthcoming.

Regards
Sarah B

That Dr. Zucker sounds like a disgusting doctor with no clue on what he "specializes" it. :icon_evil:

Oddly enough, he's the person in charge of writing the DSM paragraph or so on GID.  Pretty much making him - far from a person with no clue - the defining expert on what this all is.

And for centuries all scientist believed the earth was flat and the sun and planets revolved around it. Over time beliefs, "truths" and practices become archaic. Just cause someone's a specialist doesn't mean they know what their talking about. I've run into way too many professionals like that, as I'm well you have too.

did anyone catch this?

"her sex on the outside didnt match how she felt on the inside, and thats how every transgendered child feels"

last i checked our minds were all independent of each other...

Well, I could see the issue in that it might suggest that if you're transgender you must have felt body dysphoria at a young age, but I don't think he's saying so.

i appreciate (home made) saurkraut for its nutrition values but i still hate the taste.  so yes, i am complaining about things that i should/do appreciate.

I just dont like that it blatantly says that we all feel/have felt the exact same way.

But the very definition of transgender is someone who's gender identity does no match with their physical sex. There are exceptions when you get into the umbrella term, but they all point back to the same thing. People just experience them in different ways and have different needs.

I am not even sure how to reply to that, sorry. If you don't identify with the definition of in your case, feeling more comfortable as male than female, or feeling you should be a male or something along those lines, why else would you go into therapy?

This is a definition here pretty much everyone who does the process (and does not regret it or isn't having some sort of other body disorder) identify with. People being born into one body and feeling they should be the other. Or they are the other inside.

It can't get more simple and accurate than that.

It doesn't mean you are not an individual. I am sure you differ in your feelings then Lachlann in many things. But note, you might also be alike in many others. Does it hurt your individuality when I say that?
