Title: Car Insurance Rates
Post by: Icephoenyx on February 19, 2010, 05:23:43 PM
Hello, in my area, women pay a slightly cheaper rate on car insurance premiums. Do you think there is any way to change this after I transition? Thanks.

When I went full time and had changed my name legally, I contacted my insurance carrier Geico.  Yes the one with the little green guy.  And they not only changed the name they changed the gender.  This gave me a lot better rate, even being 54 at the time of the change.

The basis of it is lower T = Lower aggressive tendency = less risks taken = less accidents.

So yes, make sure you TELL them you have transitioned as you don't want your policy invalidated if they later find out, but most will then offer you the normal rate for your new gender anyway.

Haha, I had the opposite happen. When they changed the gender on my insurance to female the rate went up by $5/mo. Ironically, I was on the phone with a girl at the time and she was perplexed, saying that usually women have lower rates. Go figure.

Was it easy to change your gender on your policy, or did they put up a fight?

When I changed my name on my policy, I simple asked to have it changed.  I guess they figured that if I changed my male name to an obvious female name then it followed that I also changed gender.

Sorry was having a bit of an out of brain session

There was an actuary called Arch
Whose calculations were state of the art
Since car insurance was his forte by far
He knew the cheaper rates were for the tarts

Sorry Arch  Sorry tarts

Sorry everyone

They changed the gender on my insurance when my license changed and it came up for renewal. I did nothing one way or the other.

When I changed my name on my policy they asked if I wanted to change genders.  I asked if it would change my rates and they said no - it was just for their records.  I changed the gender even though my drivers license still has an M on it.

I just got the renewal.  The rate when down $26 for 6 months.  Of course, the car is now a year older since we have passed New Years, so that may be it.  Or they're just trying to be nice to an older woman. ::)

I wonder if, by showing proof of HRT, you could get it reduced before the name change?

And if so, I wonder if someone who was on chemical castration for sexual assault would be eligible for lower rates.
