And this is why I hate living in the Deep South.  And some of the comments *seethes*  I hope I got this posted right.

JACKSON, Miss. – An 18-year-old Mississippi lesbian student whose school district canceled her senior prom rather than allow her to escort her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo said she got some unfriendly looks from classmates when she reluctantly returned to campus Thursday.

QuoteA Feb. 5 memo to students laid out the criteria for bringing a date to the prom, and one requirement was that the person must be of the opposite sex.

And speak in 19th century English.

Glad she's back at school at least.  I really feel for her.  My school (also deep south) had similar policies.  I doubt they would have canceled prom though.  However, I never went to find out.

The people who obviously need the education are the idiots running the school.  Yeesh, as dumb as a bag of hammers.  What ever happened to 'make a decision' when you're in power.

As bad as it is for a school to dictate things like 'who ought to take whom to the prom' (and what about the girls who went together in the past?) the fact that they are so afraid of the Terrorist Lesbian Menace Among Us, that they cancel the entire deal.  What cowards.

Yeah, you know those terrorist teenage lesbians and their terrorism and bombs... and stuff.  ;D

Seriously, this is an outrageous case. The fact that some people are blaming the lesbian students for shutting down the prom is ridiculous. Sometimes I think that 99% of the world has its head screwed on backwards.

I don't want to go so far as to be defending prom, which is one of the dumbest things around, little kids pretending to be adults (under careful adult supervision of course) where Junior find out just how much a decent piece of ass is going to run him for the rest of his life and Little Betty finds out that if you drink too much the strangest things end up in your mouth.  Fark that stuff.

School have no business doing this sort of 'feel good' social stuff anymore.  If they want a prom, do what Kevin Bacon did in footloose and DIY.

But I sure as ->-bleeped-<- am totally over administrators who be cashing the check like they were in charge, but when it comes time to act can't pull it off.  As the saying goes: Lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way.

/// Spent my prom night @ Winterland dancing to the Grateful Dead with my GF and a bunch of other similar types.  No tux, jeans, my leather coat, and my favorite concert T-shirt.  We didn't have to worry about sneaking booze in because we had enough mushrooms to push us way past the third bardo (and enough smoke to bring us back down again).  No parental units chaperoning the 'after party', we just all went walking on Ocean Beach after the show - laughing hysterically at the prom people as I remember.  Total cost, about 25% of what the prom people paid.  Hell, anyone could (and does) go to prom.  I feel much better about seeing the Dead at Winterland.

I didn't go to Prom. Didn't want to. Didn't want to dress in a tux, didn't have anyone to take, didn't want to ask some random kid because I knew I would probably be rejected. Didn't want to hear the sh-tty music they play at those dances. Et cetera, et cetera.

That's not the issue here. The issue is that some moron administrators are ruining prom for everyone because one prom-going couple doesn't conform to their bigoted, 17th-Century social norms.

Have you been to Mississippi?  17th Century notions is being pretty forward all things considered.  It's last in the nation in education, and last in money earning (the two are tied together) for a reason.

I assume by your question that you have been to MS, Tekla.  May I ask how long you were there for?

I would also like to see the statistics for those two statements as when I researched them just now I turned up Arizona being the least educated state and Louisiana having the least amount of income per capita.  I used State Master and searched personal income (per capita) by state and best educated index (most recent) by state.

and she won't even allow herself to be shamed into backing down and renouncing her antisocial ways?  she's obviously not ready to graduate from highschool, she's missed some of the most important lessons! "do not flaunt your deviance children, conformity only works when we all play together."
