Title: Next of Kin
Post by: Sarah B on March 11, 2010, 11:50:39 PM
Well as the title suggests, who do you put down as your next of kin.  The question does come up reasonably often and I have searched Susan's forums to see if any one has spoken up about this particular question that appears in various types of forms for example passports and usually in certain jobs, like government jobs.

One day my long term friend said she put my name down.  I do know her family history and she does not have many family members.  I was touched by that kind gesture.

When I first started out, I hardly ever came across the question and when I eventually did, I put my friends name down.  Then eventually (well recently) I started putting down my mother as next of kin.

These days I put down my friend as next of kin or my mothers depending on the form I am filling out still keeping in my mind the privacy ramifications.  If some one asks about my mothers surname and my surname, I just say that was my maiden name, different fathers or I would say its personal.

So your thoughts on this little matter would be helpful.

Kind regards
Sarah B

At my age ( 55) it is a mute point.  I am an orphan now, both parents have passed over to the great unknown.  I have no blood brothers or sisters.  But I do put down my friend, her son and even my ex  as a emergency contacts.
